Zooom v2.2.9 MacOSX Incl. Keymaker-CORE

Another small application for Mac OSX by Core. Read Nfo for installation instructions. Enjoy this release.

Description:
Zooom makes moving, resizing and zooming your application windows an effortless process. It’s how windows should have been made. Once you get used to using Zooom, you’ll be wondering how you ever managed to live without it. Zooom is very easy to use – you only need to know two key combinations and you’re fully trained! To use Zooom, the general rule is that you hold down a set of modifier keys (which you can of course change if you wish) and then click somewhere within a window to initiate a drag or resize action.

Features:

  • Move and resize your windows with a flick of the mouse
  • Bring windows to the front by moving the mouse over the window
  • Reduce Clutter

I don’t want to to criticise this app but I cannot see the point. I use expose, with 12 desktops, so I have no problem with too many windows open in a single desktop, in fact the app i use for each desktop is maxed out and the only time i need to move a window is if i wanna drag something to the desktop.
Someone tell me why this app would be useful, and try and give a real life scenario so that I can understand.
WOW – now I dont need to use the title bar to move a window, or the resize tool to resize, I can click hot keys and do it anywhere on the window. Hot keys vs. moving ur mouse 5cm!?

I just don’t understand it’s real value – windows 7 has a few features a bit like this, still as pointless but better, where by shaking the toolbar the window will max to fill half the screen, do it again and you can compare 2 docs next to each other. whooptie woo!

    blizza,

Well if you hold down the shift option key or shift command key it allows you to instantly resize the window without having to go to the bottom right corner also it allows you to move the window without having to go to the top bar of the app.

There is a feature called magnetics which allows you to snap the window to another window for alignment purpose or resize purpose. Kind of a neat trick especially if you use illustrator or indesign to snap to grid or guidelines.

With that said the resources it seems to take to function is about almost 30MB and that is a large footprint for something that does just this.

My alternative app is SizeUp which uses 9MB of resources and is all hotkey specific. Which allows me to maximize a window, move it in any direction with using only half my monitor real estate, moving it from one monitor to another, using a quarter of my monitor real estate, and a few other small things.

I never liked the bottom right corner resizing in the mac and wish you could grab any edge of the window to size it and that is why these programs have been given birth. A hardcore mac user may not see the point of doing it that way, but if you come from a windows environment then you really miss that feature.

Now keep in mind everyone works differently and why would someone want to resize their windows? Well if you have a large monitor then resizing a window to be see at all times while working in another window is the reason. Let say one window has your website homepage displayed on it and you just want to be able to see it at all times as you write code in another program such as textmate. Well you save your stuff in text mate and then quickly click your website and press f5 for refresh or hit the refresh key. Sure you can alt tab to it or hunt it down, but why bother when you can just click right to it and see it at all times as you make your changes live?

This can also be used as a stock ticker which you can see at all times or chat room and so on. Especially when you consider if you are using multiple websites which you can’t use the zoom feature for but there is one item of particular interest that you like seeing at all times and need to resize it to just see that.

This works really well if you have a large monitor with plenty of pixel real estate. So I can see the use for the app, but I wish it was more memory efficient. Maybe I am being hard on it and 30MB of resources isn’t much, but it adds up if I allowed every application to use that much. Especially if you use virtualization applications such as parallels / virtual box / vmware fusion which you need your ram for the other OS and your main OS. Or more memory intensive programs such as 3d design or most adobe design applications. If you’ve got 16gbs of ram then I guess that isn’t an issue, but most of us have between 2gb to 4gbs. Usually the os itself eats 1gb by itself and so in reality we have about 1gb to 3gb to work with.

Anyway it all comes down to it as how you work. Clearly you’ve never needed to see all your windows in realtime and don’t mind switching back and forth. If that is how you work then great, but some like to organize their monitor real estate.
