ZitZot: Toshiba finally drops HD DVD, will sell Blu-Ray player

Exactly a year and five months after Toshiba brought an end to the high-definition disc format war, the Japanese consumer electronics company confirmed its plans to produce its own Blu-ray Disc player. Previously, rumors trickled in about Toshiba considering such a move; Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun this weekend reported that Toshiba will adopt the format it once battled against.

The format war was vigorously fought, as Toshiba and Microsoft backed HD DVD, and Sony, Panasonic, and a consortium of consumer electronics companies promoted Blu-ray Disc. The winner of this battle would control over the lucrative, high-definition successor to the quarter-of-a-billion dollar standard-definition DVD business.

You might be waiting a while for a new format mate, because all the movie houses are releasing title after title on BRD.
The BR player prices are coming down and all looks very
    healthy for the format.

I've got a PS3 and lots of BRD's, couldn't be happier with my HD setup.

Poor Toshiba will go from HD failure to making big bucks on BR, so get on the format or wait a good 10 years for something else to get the following they have now.

I couldn't care less what format is up here, I leech free stuff and have lots of 720/1080 stuff for my media player.

This shows cut-throat competition doesn't necessarily always have to be best for the consumers at large. Forced upgrade is the order of the day… people were, are and always will be sheeple. :(

The masses will always be sheep and others like us will visit sites like these to find our way in the HD market.

However Blu-Ray holds the cards with DTS-HD & TrueHD along with the ultimate picture quality over what can be downloaded in HD format (unless you download the entire BRD of course).

So I say, buy the movies or music Blu-Ray's that you have to enjoy in it's current best format, otherwise leech away.

No probs, I'll be around waiting for the revolution you're predicting.

Though if you look at DVD, released to the market with a SLOW uptake in 1993, it's still around today, what's that, let's say 16 years and still going.

Blu-Ray hits the market in 2006 with another SLOW uptake, it will survive a healthy life now that sales are picking up and my 10 years stand. I hope to be around :)

Hola: thank you for writing a reply to that stupid comment from TWOJAstara so I didn't have too :-D

Might I add, the 360 hasn't failed in quality and quantity of games and that's what I bought it. The PS3 doesn't come close in that area. I don't want a blu-ray player that can play a few games that are 90% of the time better on the 360 anyway!

blu ray will be around for awhile no one is doubting that. But the next best thing is just around the corner, 3D TV. Will that come on blu ray, or another format?

  17. Cirious
    July 20th, 2009 | 13:04

    @13

I'm not saying Blu-Ray won't survive evolution…even the media will probably not change. I'm on your side considering the facts it took them many years to jump from magnetic video/cassete tapes to digital discs…

    however…

the technology progress in conjuction with market demand FORCES all these companies to work on something "new", something "different" so to survive competition and keep cash flow in. My "prediction" is based on simple facts of this progress…and to be honest I look forward on this next step because it'll simply denote the decrease of Blu-Ray price.

P.S. As I mentioned above, media will possibly not change. I was referring to format. (like from DVD to HD and/or Blu-Ray)

I have over 200 dvds most were under five bucks thanks blue ray!

Hehe I can't see the point in blue ray even now. Don't get me wrong if it's still around in a few years and it's the same price as dvd I might jump but till then…no thanks. My dvd player upscales pretty good and my service has all the channels I actually watch in HD and record so meh.

I still buy regular dvds even today. The older dvd format won't die anytime soon look at VHS. Things will change when I can pick up a cheap blu ray player for 20-30 bucks and the movies aren't more than ten bucks.

  24. earl
    July 20th, 2009 | 14:34

DVDs gonna be around for a while and blue ray gonna be around just as long. I think the next thing is completely digital media players that will play all video formats, especially mkv. The PS3 is the closest thing out for that now besides a pc. I ope sony comes out with an update so it will play mkv without having to convert them first. Probably not though since they re making too much money off of selling blue ray movies. But digital drives the cost down because br discs are expensive. But who knows maybe some company that is not worried about movie profits will create the digital media player with an enormous hd I'm thing like 1 TB. The next step is doing away with the discs takes u too much space.

  25. earl
    July 20th, 2009 | 14:38

They pretty much exist already, look at your dvr from comcast or dish network. The only thing is you can't upload your own video to it, but they record HD content and plays them back I wonder what format the cable box captures HD video with.

  26. The Realist
    July 20th, 2009 | 14:59

Yep I agree I doubt blu ray will go away and may even outlast dvd but price and multi format support are the biggest things holding back any format new or old. Have to say I have a HTPC which is my old gaming rig I had and it's nice. Dual tv tuners a nice video card I can play the latest games or movies on my plasma or lcd. Comcast gave me a scientific atlanta box that is a hd receiver and a dvr all in one. It's not bad but Comcast I think compresses their hd content as I get skipping or hitching now and then which from my knowledge means too much compression.

The best idea so far for a media type of box I saw was from western digital where they took the mybook hard drives they have and made it into a media player. I thought this was one of the better ideas so far since you can take it to work home (they are the size of a book I own a few of them) hook it up to your computer transfer a movie or family video from a camera etc and then hook it up to your tv. I already do this with a 250gb model it's an older one but it doesn't have a built in media player UI and remote. It's used to transfer movies from one machine to another or images or drivers etc whatever I need it for.

    July 20th, 2009 | 15:03

Oh and and neglected to mention that I have been using a PC connected to my TV since maybe 2000 to play back kids shows via playlists etc. It was a real pain getting things to line up right on the old crt tvs :) .

I have tried some of the wireless media hubs and boxes but would rather use a PC of some form than these products and the westerndigital being a glorified hard drive with a media players seemed the best choice in my opinion as anything else had format limitations or problems and might as well use a pc instead.

    July 20th, 2009 | 15:03

Video to DVD was a much bigger step than DVD to Blu-Ray. People where psyched to move from tapes to a small disc, so it became a HUGE succes. However, I don't think that many people will be psyched to move from DVD to Blu-Ray. Maybe in 10 years when a complete BR/HD setup will be somewhat affordable (and I don't mean a lame console that plays BR).

For now Blu-Ray is something for the show-offs and tech-geeks. That will change, but not that fast.

  29. QuadrupelQ
    July 20th, 2009 | 15:07

Oh yeah, I forgot the price of the discs…

Who will shell out $99 for a disc that offers a lame movie in somewhat higher quality? That's actually THE bottleneck for me! Lower the prices and then we'll talk…

@27 I know is pricey but streaming to a ps3 is freaking awesome you get better quality picture then from a ps3 have filters for mosquito noise and other forms of background noises. There is also aspect ratio options I know when I watch streams through my pc they wont go full screen on my tv.
But will on my ps3 thats just the software I am using though.

and it does it all without wires. Thats my big thing I had about 300 ft of wires running in my room got a ps3 got an HDMI cord and an ethernet cable.

Do some research you might be pleasantly impressed by the options it gives you that 95% of other media hubs do not.

@25 hey earl I was in the same boat as you for a very long and frustrating time until I stumbled on a little gem called PS3MediaServer which will stream .MKVs to your ps3 flawlessly like 100% flawlessly fast forwarding is a little slow but other than that it is like watching it off a bluray.

check it out via google IMO it is the #1 program anyone with a ps3 should have. No joke its probably saved me 1000 hours for not having to burn 1000 damn discs for my family to watch in a different room . YAH THATS RIGHT I OWNZ 2 PS3's the savings from Dual layer dvds and normal dvds has saved me atleast the price of 2 ps3's probably close to three by now.

To all of you wanting to know the what the new format of High Definition will be? I have watched a documentary on it. In Japan they are developing an 10K by 15K resolution format, ready by 2015. So how about "dem apples?"

You'd be able to see high def on a screen the size of a movie theatre. I guess the organic flat screens will emerge. I've also seen out of M.I.T. a new screen that rolls out like wallpaper — still development, but it's the future of screens. That'll play 10k by 15k.

Enjoy your 720p and 1080p for now.

One more thing…. how's a 10k by 15k resolution going to be downloadable efficiently… my poor bandwidth :)

Going from VHS to DVD was adapted quicker, because we didn't need to upgrade all of our equipment to notice the huge gains in video quality. A lot of people didn't make the switch until DVD players started selling for about $50 or less.

For most of us that still use CRT TVs, BR requires a substantial upgrade to get the full video quality gain. I think you'll see more people switch to BR when 1080p TVs get down to around $300-$400 (36" and bigger), and BR players are about $50-$75. Maybe in a couple more years.

Didn't Sony already announce 3D bluray titles for the future with a software update for PS3 or other compatible hardware? (and of course a 3D TV).

BR will be around for a while yet… 10 – 15 years I would think.

To be honest who really wants anything above 1080p anyway? (for home use). And to say 10 or 15k are you insane? Maybe IMAX stuff will come on that… no other films would have a chance, 15x the resolution would also be mega expensive (TV wise).

  47. horsemeat
    July 20th, 2009 | 22:06

    @37

Thanks for the info on PS3MediaServer, I've been using tversity to stream my hd files but I have to re-encode them first with ps3video9 or mkv2vob, I'll give it a try to see if it will play the mkv with converting it first because sometimes my sound wouldn't work on some movies even when I converted them plus if it will play a regular mkv that will cut my time in half.

    @32
I looked into that popcorn media server, and it sounds like what I was talking about. Read some reviews some good some bad. I think it was made in China and takes 2 to 3 weeks to get. People complained about it not working all the time and not having any customer support. Others praised it as the best media server and that could play anything. Do you know if it comes with a hard drive, I couldn't find that out but I did read that you can install your own.

Besides that my ps3 has been good to me for watching hd content, I got a 360 but it seems a little harder and longer to convert hd movies for it plus I didn't want to buy a wireless adapter, more wires.

To the guy who said blank blu rays are 100 bucks, your wrong maybe around 20-30 bucks if a blank br discs cost 100 bucks then all blue ray movies would cost about $125
