ZitZot: Rapidshare fined €24m for hosting illegal songs

File hosting service Rapidshare has been fined €24m by a German court and ordered to filter online content more effectively. German royalties collector GEMA, which brought the case against the company, had called on the Regional Court in Hamburg to order Rapidshare to prohibit around 5,000 music tracks from being made available online.

http://www.doobybrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/rapidshare-new.gif

“The judgment states that the hosting service itself is now responsible for making sure that none of the music tracks concerned are distributed via its platform in the future,” according to a GEMA.

So basically.. GL trying to up anything onto rapidshare anymore.. Good thing my account with them expired a few days ago.

Can see a lot of RS users jumping from that burning ship when their accounts come round for re-activation. Screw it, every decent site (and up-er) seems to be using Hotfile now anyway.

This is so stupid. The only "filtering" they could use to prevent this stuff from being uploaded would impose annoying issues for their paying customers preventing the company from functioning properly…

24million euro fine for 5000 songs? that's bullsh*t when you can get them legally for 1 euro why not just fine them the cost of purchasing the songs? American ideology of excessive fines and punishment are spreading to europe which is sad to see.

The Estimated Value of the Tracks is 24 million … NOT THE FINE.

Sounds like this was a post made to promote that hotfile crap, which is a slow and BS site.

I get twice the download speed from rapidcrap, and 4 times the speed from megaupload than I do from that bs site hotfile.
Plus if you are using the free function hotfile makes you wait longer in between files than most other sites.
MU doesn't make you wait at all.

I have to disagree with you "Breeze" This is starting to sound like a promotion for Hotfile!
I took a 3 day trial membership with them and they sucked on the download speed. Then on free download half of the time it times out and skips to tell U that you allready have used max download with empty pocket's.
I will stick to the Europe Servers and happy to chuck out the money for Premium.

Its lovely how people are complaining about a company supporting fast downloads for a few years now. JD-Downloader and MSD are great programs to use like 22 said. And RS is fast, easy to use and paypal supportive. Cant really think of something else to want.
So the people complaining should maybe bring at least a few arguments.

    June 26th, 2009 | 19:43

The truth is that if they block illegal content they lose 99% of their customers. ^^
And hotfile can be the next target of those crap lawyers. When this dog catch cat game will have an end?
Maybe when softwares/games/movies companies start selling their products for a lower price? A game, for example, is just a crap CD contening an appplication that most of times is discarded after we zeroe it. If you wanna play online you still need sometimes to pay for that service. Come on, do you guys think we are stupids? Life to the scene!

these judges in Hamburg are infamous for supporting the industry. in germany you can sue your foe anywhere you like so the industry almost anytimes does it in Hamburg. not only just that, they sue at many places at the same time, no matter how many cases are dumbed, if only one makes it, they win. they are just abusing the system.

and hotfile is hosted in germany too, so no improvement at all as anything hosted here falls under german laws and that favours the industry (thanks to bribed politicans, or call it "lobbyism" if you like). vote for the pirates if you want to change that!

Whats gives with the great free program "Rapget".
I have used the GREAT program Rapget for over three years! There is no better for Rapidshare files. What gives with the owner. He is pissing a lot of people off.
I can't believe there are no programmers out there that can fix this problem.
Like I said, don't know what is wrong with the owner-maker of Rapget, but he could be making good money right about now. I would pay up to like $50 to have this working and keep working.
So mean while while he gets his act together, have to use "Internet Download Manager".. Its not to bad, good speeds… but it's not the very easy to use Rapget.

    Privacy Protection by strong Encryption.
We optionally offers to download files using 256bits AES strong-encryption technology, without any log of the downloads, to guarantee perfect privacy against ISP or foreign agencies.
Don't hesitate to communicate about our security features when you put a link on a blog, web page or a forum: your links will be more valuable, and people won't hesitate to use them" plus you get points which you can trade in for extended service and MONEY. they really do pay out the money as i have received some from the points. i've had files online from there since 2006 and they are still active. they aren't that great for free users though… but better the hotfile.

I love Rapidshare. I connect @ 24Mb and I get 24Mb speed from them. 1 Gig takes less than 7 mins and it is cheap considering that 1 movie costs that much to watch at the cinema for 3 months of Rapidshare.

    @Netranger17

I use http://www.openshares.info to process multiple rapidshare links. Works flawlessly

GOOD! Im sick of seeing company's like rapidshare making money from pirated material. Its companies like this media agencies should go after, not the user like they do with p2p.

Great! Fuk rapidshare. The greatest uploaders use several sites like rapidshare, hotfile, megaupload, netload with interchangeable links so you can download multiple parts at the same time for FREEEEEEEEEEE! All other uploaders are lamers and can kiss my azz!
