ZitZot: PlayStation 3 US sales up 70%
After years of third-stringing it, Sony’s beleaguered PS3 may finally be rallying, according to sales data cited on Sony’s US PlayStation blog. The company’s American division reports year-over-year October hardware sales lifted nearly 70 percent, and says its online PlayStation storefront clinched record revenues, with downloads up 60 percent over the same period last year.
SCEA claims some 650 million pieces of content have been downloaded worldwide, though–just weighing in here–that’s really more of a talking point figure, since it mixes ‘free’ with ‘paid-for’ content. It’s one of these ‘dazzling’ numbers arrived at by jackhammering a slab of data into the tiniest possible fragments, a bit like claiming the PSP Go has ‘16,000 pieces of downloadable content’–technically accurate, but mostly comprised of the 13,300 individual TV episodes available.

Better late than never
Hardly surprising given that last year it was doing abysmally and it’s just had a relaunch/price cut. It would have taken a major catastrophe to not destroy their sales for October 08.
It’s still not in a great position, with no major lead over the 360 and still far behind the Wii. They’ll still lose billions on it this year as they did last year (still selling at a loss) and they’ll be in third place in North America at least for the entire generation.
Im still waiting for God of War 3. Besides that, everything else i like playing is on Xbox 360.

Why does eveyone say the PS3 sold badly? Sure it didn’t sell as well as the PS2, but the PS2 didn’t start selling well until it received a big price cut after being on the market for a while.
The current price of the PS3 is pretty much the launch price of the PS2 back in Q4 2000.
Even though the PS3 was way more expensive than the 360, it still managed to sell over 20million units in a shorter time frame than the 360 which isn’t that bad if you think about it.
This systems sales will jump once that FF 13 comes out.

the problem with the 360 is the exclusives. i have found them all to be terrible. halo is the most overhyped franchises in gaming history and fable is easily passed up on. gears is ok but not great. then theres the ps3 exclusives… they are just fantastic! mgs4, resistance 1 & 2, lbp… the list just goes on and on. everyone always comes back with the “live is better” argument. its just not true. i hate live! any time i try to play online there is a lobby full of stupid little kids yelling and swearing at each other and gameplay with these clowns is even worse. i would much rather pay nothing and use psn with mature people than pay au$80/yr for live. unfortunately i still pay for it cause sometimes live gets demos that psn dont get or psn gets it later.
the main reason i have a 360 is to test out multi platform games and see whether or not im gonna buy them for my ps3. the ps3 has so many advantages over the 360 its just insane. i now have 2 ps3’s. i bought my second unit a couple of months ago to use in my bedroom as a media centre and it is great for that too. i come here and d/l my tv shows and bluray rips and stream them over the network with ps3ms and it works a treat.
its a pity that people didnt jump on when the price was higher. cause its an awesome piece of hardware. i spose most people just looked at the price tag and “thought” the 360 can do the same. oh how wrong they are.

i still see xbox360 as a defective system since i have had every revision including the newer jasper and they all died on me. I got a stack of 6 dead xbox360 and and brother has 3 which made me give up and stick with a PS3. My brothers only working 360 just got banned for using a flashed hard drive and i dont think he is going to buy anymore lol.

People say the PS3 is so much more expensive then the 360…but the $200 Xbox doesn’t come with a hdd (All PS3’s do) and even the $300 360 doesn’t have wireless internet. That’s another $100. The Xbox really is more expensive because of the cost of accessories and XBL.
Just another reason I like my PS3.

The 360 has two wireless internet adapters, one is $80 the other is $100 and you will never find them bundled with the system at a reasonable price.
PS3 now has Netflix support too. Like the others mentioned, when adding price of network adapter and hard drive, as well as Bluray not to mention there are no subscription fees. Not sure abot the slim, but my PS3 doesn’t have a huge power brick to lug around like 360
You are wrong, you can get any wireless bridge and hook it up to your 360 which is super cheap. ANd who cares anyway? Ethernet is better for me anyway. There is also a 3rd party wireless adapter for 40 bucks made by madcatz.

Well my wireless speed is 300Mbps, who needs ethernet.. Tho the PS3 does not support the 300Mpbps but my PC’s do. Who needs a faster connection than that? huh?

Just stick a DD-WRT flashed Linksys or compatible router on the PS3 and set the router as a Bridge, then you can enjoy Wireless-n speeds as it runs connected to the Gigabit Ethernet port. Your wireless speeds will be as fast as your bridged router is.
