ZitZot: Mozilla released faster Firefox 3.5 Beta 4

Mozilla Corp. late yesterday released Firefox 3.5 Beta 4, the latest development preview of the company’s next browser, which has been delayed several times and now is tentatively slated to ship before the end of June. The milestone features more work under the hood — particularly in stability and performance of the new TraceMonkey JavaScript engine — as well as tweaks to the private browsing mode and improvements to the underlying Gecko layout engine, said Mike Beltzner, director of Firefox.

Computerworld’s tests showed that Firefox 3.5 Beta 4 is about 19% faster than Beta 4 in the SunSpider JavaScript benchmark; both betas were considerably faster than the production browser, Firefox 3.0.10, which was also released yesterday. Other enhancements, said Beltzner in a message posted to the mozilla.dev.planning forum, have been made to Firefox’s new location awareness feature and support for Web worker threads — an enhanced scripting functionality that lets site developers shift JavaScript computations to a background thread — has been completed.

Firefox has always been faster than IE and this version is no exception. In fact it's probably as fast as Google Chrome.

    @ 3

LOL. You havent used IE for a while now then. Its clearly faster than any firefox version out ther and uses 75% less memory. I used to think its cool to hate on IE too, but you should try the new one its much better than FF.

@8 — Personal preference of course, but the one reason that I will never, ever, switch from Firefox is the AdBlock/Noscript combo. IE's improved, granted, but still can't touch FireFox just for that. Certainly not saying FireFox is the best, because it's not, but until there's addons available for Chrome, Opera or whatever that's just as good, I'll never switch.

With those two, zero ads. No popups, no inane mouseovers, nada, nothing that the other browsers can come close to yet.

Who cares if it’s faster? It’s a sucky browser. Firefox still beats anything hands down as the most customizable browser ever.

@9-that's exactly the same reason I will stick with FF. I only wish it were a bit lighter on the memory, but then again, RAM is cheap these days…

Most IE users have to live with ads all over the internet. I see very little ads (especially on pages I visit often) thanks to the fantastic add-on „AdBlock Plus“ for Firefox.

@8-I'm not hating on IE, I've used the newest version and I like it a lot, it's a drastic improvement over IE7. However it is still the slowest of all the major browsers and it is much less customizable than Firefox.

With every new major version of FF I always try to switch from opera.
But once you are used to your specific browser its just so damn hard.

    @9 opera have add block,

Safari 4 is the fastest browser out there. It also runs webkit, which is much better than Gecko. Sorry Firefox, you had my heart once, but Safari has it now.

It's down to your system too, not just your browser.

Here is a website that shows you the average benchmarks for each browser, and let's you benchmark yourself against them.

    http://service.futuremark.com/peacekeeper/results.action?key=lc1

I use Firefox 3.0.10 which gets 566 point on there, but on my system, i only scored 443 which is prolly cause i need to upgrade to a quad core some day. :P

    My spec:

    AMD X2 6000 3Ghz
    6Gb RAM
    9800 GTX

Oh, and as the guy above my last post (20) said, Safari is the fastest, by a long way according to that benchmark site.

But i just loves me the customisability of FF, and it's not slow enough to make me look elsewhere anyway.

Does anybody really have any speed issues when browsing a website? I've never thought to myself, "Man, this browser is taking for ever." Browsing isn't exactly computer-intensive.

I agree, I love Opera, IE8, Safari to play with but all my functionality is in FF and it's addons. Anyone know of an addon sync like xmarks is for bookmarks? Thanks.
