ZitZot: Church of Scientology banned at Wikipedia

http://pandemiclabs.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/wikipedia-logo.jpgWikipedia has banned the Church of Scientology from editing any articles as punishment for repeated and deceptive editing of articles related to the controversial religion, a landmark ruling from the site’s inner circle which prides itself on being open and inclusive.

In a 10-1 ruling Thursday, the site’s arbitration counsel voted to ban users coming from all IP addresses owned by the Church of Scientology and its associates, and further banned a number of editors by name. The story was first reported by The Register.

Self-serving Wikipedia edits are hardly new. Wired.com readers pulled in an award for discovering the most egregious Wikipdia whitewashes by corporation and government agencies, but this is the first time the site has taken such drastic actions to block such edits.

stop spamming nonsense. At least get your facts straight.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientology#Recognition_as_a_religion

In 2000, the Italian Supreme Court ruled that Scientology is a religion for legal purposes.[81][82] In recent years, religious recognition has also been obtained in a number of other European countries, including Sweden,[5][83] Spain,[83][84] Portugal,[85] Slovenia,[83] Croatia[83] and Hungary,[83] as well as Kyrgyzstan[86] and Taiwan.[5]

It's not a religion, it's a religious cult (look at the definitions for cult and religion in Websters Dictionary). The difference is a religious cult uses manipulative methods to retain members, quite often has the founder as the God who is worshipped, usually has a manipulative authoritarian leader, is usually based on a cult of personality, has a culture of "us vs them" with "them" being out to get "us", and uses highly intense indoctrination methods – and a religion does not.

Admittedly, there are similarities – Christians have a Bible, Muslims have the Qu'oran and Scientologists have Dianetics. At least the bible and the qu'oran are well written (even if they are vague and contradictory of themselves), unlike anything L Ron Hubbard ever wrote – he was possibly the worst science fiction writer ever (Battlefield Earth is a steaming pile of turd, supreme on the top of the pile of really really really bad sci-fi). Not to mention he did say that he would "really like to start a religion, because that's where the real money is" or words to that effect – something CoS representatives flat out deny (but then they have spent the last twenty years flat our denying a lot of things in and out of courts) – check out http://www.xenu-directory.net/opinions/lindsay-19990117.html for a detailed look at this.

Scientology is a belief system for suckers, and there will always be suckers. Not that mainstream religions are any more credible but at least they don't involve aliens, and unlike Scientology, you can leave if you want to (with perhaps the exception of fundamentalist Islam) and you won't be threatened or pursued through the courts.

Anyone who believes in a religion is deluded in the first place in my opinion, but anyone who thinks Scientology is a bona fide religion and not a religious cult is kidding themselves (or a scientologist already!

    May 30th, 2009 | 12:12

lord xenu won't be too happy lol. Scientology is a cult not a religion. A religion does not charge people for their beliefs or brainwash people into believing those beliefs.

  21. meh
    May 30th, 2009 | 12:39

I know it's being recognized as a religion in some other countries. All I wanted to see if anyone would catch it and get mad at it, and you did. You're being an hypocrite too because you fail to mention that major European, and non European, countries like Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Belgium and the United Kingdom don't recognize this SECT as a religion.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientology#Recognition_as_a_religion
"Other countries, notably Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Belgium and the United Kingdom, refuse to grant Scientology religious recognition."

They're being sued in France for tax fraud, in case of you don't know. Furthermore, if one day the European parliament decide that it's a SECT, European countries that granted them the status of religion will have to follow the European Parliament ruling.

You don't make a Religion out of people's wallet. scientology is a bad joke that's getting out of hands.

scientology was founded in the late 70's. what if, let's say christianity was founded around that same time. christianity would not only have been banned but everyone in the cult would be thrown into mental institutions.

christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie, born by his virgin mother, who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree.

religions blind you, they are an enemy of reason and they are all a f'n disease.

Riiiiiight…. This'll work. Because no one would think of using a proxy or anything, amirite? Not to mention how hard it is to get a new IP. This'll stop 'em for sure!

    Morons.

Just highlights yet another terminal flaw in Wikipedia — if you have to ban people from a site whose supposed strength is that anyone can edit it, obviously you're doing something wrong. There is no such thing as a "consensus", it is nothing but self-serving edits. The only difference between "good" self-serving edits and those that must be banned is who screams the loudest. A few more Scientologist on the voting council and it'd be the anti-Scientologist who were being banned.

The whole thing is disturbingly medieval in its attempts to control what can be considered truth by forcing "consensus". There can be only one truth, my truth, anything or anyone who disagrees must be banished.

The most amusing part of it all is how readily people turn "science" (most of it isn't remotely close to science, but nevermind that) into a new religion. Dogma, faith, excommunication, and all. They rail about religions they really know nothing about, all the while emulating the worst excesses of religion to a T.

I am surprised how many people here have a strong opinion about Scientology WITHOUT EVER READING ANYTHING from L. Ron Hubbard, or ever doing any service there.

Get your facts straight. Either read something or do something with Scientology before you make a comment – or STFU.

This is true for any subject btw. Or you can stay a hype-following skinny jerk geek who spends his lifetime in fornt of a computer, now knowing anything about what is out there in the REAL WORLD, but following other's advice only.

It seems like some of you guys even have to come up to the level first, where you can actually LOOK at something before knowing about it…

A hint: a friend of mine told me once: the two types of people who know everything about the world are hairdressers and cabdrives. He is just wondering if they are so smart, why are they so underpaid…. Catch my drift, Nancy?

So instead of following other seemingly "cool" haters, make your own judgement based on your own observation. Is it really that hard?….

Scientology Church practices brainwashing techniques using pseudo-science and religion. Where is danger? If you replace natural facts with artificial beliefs… think about the limits. I think you will return soon to the Flat Earth theory and Ptolemaic worldview of Universe.

Another consideration, all members are keep under strict surveillance like a quasi-fascist organization, of course, you have freedom but your actions are watched.

Despite of that, like every negative cult, it's an amazing business and world of opportunities if you are at the top of that pyramid.

Great religions aren't harmful on the same way some cults can be dangerous. Islam or Christian doesn't promote mass suicide or religion as industry. Roman Catholic receive billions like Scientology and Jehova's Witnesses too. Where the money goes? You can ask this question to yourself. At least, there are a lot of charity organizations made by Roman Catholic Church. But, you can find many cults simply as commercial enterprises.

pegasus @54: to judge a drug addict you would have to spend enough time with a few and THEN you know what it is all about. Go work at a rehab center for a while, you will not have any questions about drugs afterwards.

Taking a drug that is harmful, is irreversible and unneccassary.

Reading a teaching, examining it, and then deciding if it is useful for you or not, is not harmful.

I hope you see the difference.

Still, if you want to get to know drug addicts, dont take other's opinions. Go there and find out for yourself what they are like. That is all I'm saying.

If you feel that a 10$ booklet is too expensive, or a free lecture taking 1-2 hours of your time is too much – then Scientology is really not for you. Go watch movies and play games, those take more time and/or money and does not require you brain to function.

This is not about Wikipedia banning Scientology or about Scientology being a religion or whatever. There are still great articles about Scientology in Wikipedia, and they are unbiased in my opinion.

Wikipedia just banned those that edited articles in a malicious way. If the Pope or the CIA did the same and got caught, I bet they would get banned as well.

Of course, the tendency of Scientology to spread their propaganda by all means,as in this case, is more than obvious

The absolute most horrifying part of Scientology can be summed up in this true story, witnessed by myself. I was working in a hotel, when one day, I heard horrible screaming coming from a room down one of the hotel's hallways. As a Bellman, I had a Master key to all the rooms. As I got near the room, I saw that a large number of maids were gathered outside. None had dared go in. The woman screaming inside sounded like she was being stabbed, multiple times, all over her body. I put my key in the slot and opened the door. I was gonna absolutely go all out and charge the bastard attacking her. To my surprise, as I got in, there was a girl SITTING very placidly on a couch, looking at me. This was the girl who had been screaming. Standing near the couch, above her, were her two PARENTS, who had come from IDAHO for an INTERVENTION. As I got in the door, the girl flew out, leaving me with the parents. I asked, timidly, "Can someone… maybe… sorta… explain what THAT was all about?" The mother burst into tears. The dad, holding her, told me how they had come all the way from Idaho to California to intervene in their daughter's CULT ABDUCTION. I asked what cult. The dad told me, "That Scientology Cult". I asked him what was so serious. He told me that their daughter had CANCER and was REFUSING TREATMENT based on the Scientology rules. Her cancer could be cured, they said, but if she did not get treatment, she was doomed to DIE. The parents were completely depressed. I agreed with them. I asked them why she had been screaming like that. "Oh, they TEACH them to do that," said the dad. "In the cult, they are taught to put on a display like that whenever parents or loved ones arrive to 'hurt them'." I was horrified. I still am. I can guarantee you that innocent girl dies an unnecessary death because of that cult. Here my words, Scientologists… the world is on to your tricks, and your days ARE NUMBERED.

@85: Totally FALSE! When you have cancer, Scientology cannot really help you until you did all the medical treatments and you are free from the cancer. So it is the TOTAL OPPOSITE what that father told you. The father had no idea what he was talking about. Also there is ABSOLUTELY NO teaching that you should put on a display to hurt your parents. I really suspect this was a real cult where the girl got into that has nothing to do with Scn as what the father was saying is absolutely bull*, it is a joke. It is as true as someone saying about you that you have 3 ears – and now the world believes it.

Scientology is not opposed to medical science, it's psychology they oppose. Dead followers aren't in their best interest after all

The problem with the status as a religion is the tax exemption. Pyramid scheme religions should pay their taxes like any other corporation, it's only fair. Anyone falling into such a cult is little more than an animal, I can't say I feel too sorry for them. Kudos to the high clergy, I wish I was smart enough to fleece millions out of idiots

all religions should pay taxes, why would you subsidize religion?

Our current laws make it so it is cheaper to run a political organization out of a church.
