ZitZot: Chinese government requires all new PCs to include censorship software

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has ordered that all personal computers, whether made in China or imported from abroad, must include specific software to filter inappropriate information. Rebecca MacKinnon, assistant professor at the Journalism & Media Studies Center at the University of Hong Kong, has posted a copy of the Chinese government order on her Web site.

According to her translation, Web filtering software called Green Dam Youth Escort must be installed on all PCs sold in China as of July 1. The software also must be included on a hard-drive partition or on a CD included with the computer to allow for reinstallation.

One of my predictions, and this will hold true as history always repeats itself, is that China will go through a great revolution. As the country becomes more prosperous and it's people become more educated their people will revolt. It happened in Russia. It happened in France. It happened in America. All for different reasons. China may not necessarily become a democracy, but I can promise you a violent revolution where millions will die.

One more note on democracy. There are many voices against democracy. The Taliban. Many Old Guard Russians. The Chinese. The Iranians. The Chinese. They believe it to be an American ideology that threatens the very fabric of their way of life. Let us not forget that true democracy was a Greek philosophy, an utopia. It symbolizes everyone having a voice that counts. The Western world does not practice democracy, but it's trying.

Eat your fiber and drink water when you do!!

@10, i doubt there will be a violent revolution, maybe the people will demand change one day but China is trying to become a respected first world nation and the leading world power. the last thing they need is a violent revolution to destroy their country. Not to mention the fact that China is the second most power nation in the world (Who is also a Nuclear power and such destabilization could be dangerous for the Worlds Stability.

This has nothing to do with communism.

Draconian censorship is an integral part of 3rd world politics. Recently on request of the govt. MS India has banned searching the word "sex" from India in their new search engine "Bing". Anyone can go to Bing.com, change the country from the top-left corner to India and test it. And these curry muncher sandnigs call themselves "world's biggest democracy". More like world's biggest failure of democracy.

Hindoos, Pakis, Gulf, Afgan, NKoria, China – 90% of world's problems will be over if NATO wakes up and wipes off these savage primitive AZN nations of the face of earth. Asia is a curse upon civilization in the present era.

No restrictions = anarchy (not democracy)
Be great full for restrictions in China… imagine they would start reproducing in numbers… India? they do suppress sexuality to do the same thing… these are huge nations… there has to be communism and capitalism in the world to keep balance… Yin and yang if you want…
Leave it, be happy where you are, if don't like it, move somewhere else… stop complaining all the time… peace…

A quick search on Amazon for (legal) products that have “torrent” in the URL results in yet another list on accessible pages.

    * The LEGO toy of the Torrent spaceship from Star Wars.
    * A backpack named “High Sierra Torrent 70 Hydration Pack.”
    * Book author “Ann Torrent” wont sell anything through Panera Bread.

The bigger concern should be the US and the UK sleepwalking into a fascist dictatorship, its happening and you know it. And since Rlslog also references out to NewTorrents, you would think you would sort'a think about your statement.

Rapidcrap sucks, unless you want to pay for something already stolen, whereas, torrents still remain completely free and most cases, 100X faster (my last uncapped DL clocked in at over 13MBps – good luck getting even CLOSE to that with a premmie account from RS…).

Torrents are fighting the battle for us all in the scene, and if the attention shifts from torrents to RS, MU, MS servers, warez boards and info sites such as this one are all at risk. There's buzz all over the scene about it. Save the torrents, save your net. Just my opinion really ;)

Exactly. At least China is less meddlesome and does not go halfway across the globe to invade another country under false pretext in order to rob them of their resources. And they are least interested to thrust their POV on other countries about how their nation should be ruled.

All this anti-China propaganda is nothing more than the West projecting all its own faults onto China and hoping nobody realises what kind of a fascist and Nazi world they're living in.

At least the Chinese are honest about what they are. The Western world is the most hypocritical block in the world. They claim to give people freedom of speech, while arresting and, purposefully, disrupting peaceful demonstrations and then locking people up without trial for years.

Tell China to abide by the Geneva convention all you want but they haven't invaded countless countries, bombed them, annihilated entire villages and towns and then claimed to have the (dead) peoples interest at heart.

But fear not sheeple, there is always someone to blame for your own wrongdoings.

  72. Johney666

"Look they are not like us. They want to stay diff. from us. Let's harass them, ridicule them, attack them; And let's tell them how they should be. If they cannot be like us they have no right to exist. Because after all we are the picture of perfection. Our politicians tell us so, so we have to be, right?"

    LOL at democracy.

The fall of Soviet teaches us that no regime, no matter how mighty it may think it is, cannot continue ti exist a single day if the people of the nation does not want it to. that's lesson for the US and it's allies to learn from that incident. Chinese commie Govt. is still is power because it is needed to stay that way for the time being. And that need is felt by Chinese people – and at the end of the day that's what matters most.

Sif this is anything different to what the West is doing. In London the average person gets photographed over 250 times a day.

In America, huge databases keep track of everyone's details and allow on-the-fly cross referencing of credit card purchasing, traffic tickets, even library loans.

China is not the first country to try and censor, it will be the first country to openly put it into law however.

"Republican degradation of the education system (now the worst of developed nations) has successfully turned the American public into cattle…..I think it's too late for Obama to help."

Obama won't help. Those people are his primary supporters.

If anyone wants to see a similar thing, just look at how Big-Government supporters have driven California and Detroit into the ground, and to a lesser extent, New York. Yeah, most of the country is in bad shape, but those are off-the-map bad.

Tax-and-Spend Big-Government idealists' work can be seen in all its glory. The non-cattle have moved from those places or are considering moving. And then when they leave, who will be left to be taxed and pay for Big Government and all its "great" ideas? No one.

The average house price in Detroit is like $3000. They drove all the non-cattle away, and now Detroit reaps what it sowed after years and years of Big Government "utopian" ideas.
