YouTube will stream full episodes of TV shows

YouTube said it will begin showing full-length television programs in addition to its shorter video offerings to generate ad revenue. The Google Inc.-owned Web site said the new program is to begin with shows from CBS Corp., including “The Young and the Restless,” “90210,” “Dexter” and “Californication.” YouTube said it is in discussions with other media partners, but declined to elaborate. The Web site plans to start selling commercial slots for advertisements that are to run before, during and after full-length videos. The content provider—CBS, initially—has the option sell the ads and YouTube will take a cut of the revenue.

YouTube previously resisted selling this ad format because the Web site feared turning off viewers of its shorter clips. But marketers have been slow to warm to advertising adjacent to the usual user-created videos that make up a majority of the videos on YouTube; some larger advertisers say they would prefer to run their ads alongside more-predictable online video content. Web sites that show full-length videos—such as ABC.com, owned by Walt Disney Co., and Hulu, a joint venture between News Corp.’s Fox and General Electric Co.’s NBC Universal—can charge high rates for their ads and frequently sell out their available inventory.

Yeah, it probably will be a US only service, particularly for new shows or shows that have licenses to be broadcast abroad. I’ll continue to torrent, it’s like having an old skool VHS video recorder :)

Some of the shows are region locked but others arent. My problem with it is the poor video quality. Youtube needs to get with the times. I want to watch these shows in HD not 480×360.

I think it got some potential for people who don’t like to download illegal content of the net. (Not that I think you find some of these Internet users on this site…).

The problem why its restricted to the US surfers is because here in Europe there are television stations that buy the episodes a year later than when it launched in the US.

So when its showed on YouTube for the whole world the marked value of the show drops…

But i will keep it to my preferred 720p releases :)

Californication will be chopped to shreds. Not to mention that the YouTube servers are permanently set to “Slow”.

Every time I try to view a video, it downloads about 5% and starts playing. Nothing more downloads until the slider hits the end of the buffered data, then the video stops, it downloads another 5% and starts playing again. If I pause the video and let it sit, it eventually downloads it all, but it takes about 10x longer than it should.
