Directory Opus is the best one I think. no other program lets u customize it as much and it does some really neat stuff.
one problem though is that the latest versions have yet to be properly cracked. best bet is to get a 8 version, instead of a 9 version.

If I had a penny for every time when somebody mentioned a
“better” Windows Explorer alternative… I’d have had about 4 or 5 pennies in total…

Seriously though, I’m an uber power user (years in software development) and I never got to keep any of these replacements even though some of them did look quite attractive in theory. They always have either some sort of incompatibility problems or look too bloated to be used in a normal environment. I decided it is better to keep a shortcut toolbar leading a collection of separate, more functional and non-memory-consuming apps that can be used in all those rare cases of mass-renaming, hex-editing, wildcard-searching, and so forth.

I’ve tried most of these cracks for Directory Opus– so far I’ve found nothing for version 9 that actually works properly for any period of time. After awhile the program starts functioning in some weird ways, even tho at first it seems ok. xplorer2 was pretty good, but not up to the quality of opus. Haven’t tried this one yet but will give it a look. It used to be that YAG would always come out with a non-cracked serial # version for Directory Opus, but haven’t seen them make one available for any of the most recent versions–their release was always the most reliable.

Directory Opus is by far the best

I really preferred XYplorer to DOpus, but (i am pretty sure) it’s missing the key feature of “total windows explorer replacement” that makes DOpus stand out. If there was a way to get XYplorer to pop up instead of normal windows explorer when you double-clicked a folder, hit winkey+e or ran windows explorer in any way at all then I’d be sold.
(incidentally if anyone knows if this is now possible in this version…)

I’ve tried Both XY and Dopus9 as well as many other, But have hever been as happy as using Just plain MS Explorer with the QTTabBar ,QTAddressBar and other customizable Add-ons by “QuizoApps” found at-

    http://qttabbar.wikidot.com/

QTTabBar - Makes MS Explorer Tab-Browse able
QTAddressBar - True Breadcrumb address bar Replacement, Evan better then Dual-Pane File Managers (IMO)

The inconvenience of having to download and install it, then learn it and install it on subsequent fresh os installs is far greater than the benefit of having a slightly more functional file manager. Besides, there are dozens of free alternatives. This is not a realease. it’s spam.

“Just plain MS Explorer with the QTTabBar ,QTAddressBar and other customizable Add-ons by “QuizoApps””

Thank you very much, friend. This is excactly what I needed for my perfect Explorer setup. Utilities like these make original explorer so much better than any of these complete replacements. There’s addon called FolderSize (http://foldersize.sourceforge.net/) if you ever need this particular feature. TeraCopy (www.codesector.com/teracopy.php) is also great - I use it as secondary file mover for copying large amounts of files. I have about 5 to 7 specialized addons (Unlocker, ShellToys, etc) for my Explorer and it feels and works just great.

“This is not a realease. it’s spam.”

    Well said :)

what’s the performance on these 3rd part explorers ?
cpu usage/mem in reference to standard m$ explorer…

    April 4th, 2008 | 03:38

DirectoryOpus ~25mb ram (uses two processes)
    XYplorer ~14mb
    Xplorer² ~10mb

DO is faster (and bloated) but if you browse w/o using icons in Detail view, X² beats them all. Who really needs an avi or jpg icon when you’ve got the file extension telling you what file type it is already. The file cut/paste queuing is useful if you want to move multiple gigs of rars/avi’s to all 4 (or so) of your hard drives w/o using 4 separate threads which means less work for your CPU/HD. If you don’t move sh|t around alot, or like system tray apps, use DO. It looks nice.

There’re at least 37 file manager out there: 2xExplorer, A43, ABCommander, AcBrowser, AccelMan, Advanced file manager, CubicExplorer, Directory opus, EFCommander, ExplorerPlus, ExplorerXP, FAR, FileAnt, FileBoss, FileMatrix, FileQuest XP Gold, FreeCommander, Frigate, Gyula’s navigator, Magellan explorer, MeeSoft commander, muCommander, Nico’s commander, Powerdesk, Servant salamander, SpeedCommander, Sprintbit file manager, TotalCommander, UltraExplorer, Universal explorer, Windows file explorer, WinNavigator, WinNC.net, XFile, xplorer², XYplorer, ZTreeWin… phew!

I still think xplorer² is the best.
