XboX 360 passes 10 million sold units
Despite frequent news of Wii’s global sales domination, the Xbox 360 has managed to hit the 10 million sales mark in the US ahead of its competition, according to Microsoft. Reaching the milestone before both the Wii and PS3 in the States should secure the long-term current-gen victory for the 360, MS senior vice president, Don Mattrick, told Reuters. “History has shown us that the first company to reach ten million in console sales wins the generation battle,” stated Mattrick in a statement yesterday. Interesting fact there trivia fans. NPD figures currently puts Wii on 8.8 million sales (and closing) in the US, while PS3 is sits on 4.1 million.
Wii of course leads in the overall global race, something MS didn’t take into account when doing its sums. “Xbox 360 has the largest global install base of any current gen. high definition gaming console, Wii excluded,” the company clarified to ShackNews when asked how Xbox 360 could lead worldwide with 19 million when the Wii has sold 24.45 million. Xbox 360 has sold over 16 platinum titles that have sold through 1 million units or more, Microsoft unveiled, including “Grand Theft Auto IV,” “Halo 3,” “Madden NFL 08,” “Gears of War,” “Guitar Hero II” and “Guitar Hero III.”

in europe the PS3 crushes the xbox. Europe is neutral because none of the consoles are made there and in Asia the wii crushes the PS3 which crushes the xbox.

Well, Nintendo has trouble selling games for the Wii. A lot of people just buy the console with Wii Sports and never buy any more games.
I would seriously take the pirated games into account when they state that. There will be a percentage (unknown) that will never even buy any games so that means microsoft lose money on the consoles sold to them, not to mention the failure rate of the consoles themselves that might even mean those who modded their 360 will need to buy another one and microsoft lose even more money, and for everyone else they have to fix it ^^. No idea how much that costs microsoft. Although they do have Live that makes them tonnes on cash.

I love how ppl compare 360 sales to ps3 sales when the 360 has been out longer.Lets see here 360 = pay to play online, ps3 =free online, PS3 is getting MGS4, PS3 = no rrod, ps3 doesnt sound like a 747 taking off, just to name a few. I own all the new systems but i like wii, ps3 much better than my 360, mass effect was ok but when the 360 locks up every 20 minutes it becomes a pain in the ass.
Too bad you don’t like the xbox but there are enough of other people who are and frankly I don’t agree with anything you are saying. Xbox has much better online anyway.

Are you sure about that? I have owned ever system and I would never play 360 again. I started w/ 360 because it was new, then it returned and used the money to get a PSP. I then held on to that until I returned it for a PS3. Also bought a Wii. Returned the PS3 a few times for newer models and free games. I’m about to do it again to get PS3 MGS4 Bundle on June 12. One system is for fun, the other is for real games.

The most common problem with 360 is overheating due to the use of a cheap, foil heat sink instead of a proper grill.

The funny thing is, after a 360 owner suffers the RROD, you’ll find that a vast number of them will send their console off for repairs, and then sell it 2nd hand once it’s returned while they buy a new console, only to have to do the same thing a few months down the line. That is why so many 360’s have been bought.
Apparently M$ also intend to support the 360 until 2012 and they their users can look forward to MORE multi-disc games. ROFL!!!! I haven’t had any of those since the PS1:

The best selling console in Japan at the moment is the PSP. It’s has been outselling the Wii for the last 2 months.

The other problem with the 360 is that they like to chew discs. This is a big problem which isn’t covered by the extended 3 year warranty. Apparently this happens more often when the console is standing vertically. The PS3 can play discs without chewing them when it’s upside down.

1-Wii is for all ages and has some good family Fun…not going to play HAlo 3 or GTAIV w/ the 5 yr old but sports on the Wii ok… And the largest growing segment of System buyers(not software buyers) is women who purchase for themselves as opposed to mothers for their kids.
2-Ps3 IS in a similar situation to Dreamcast and SATURN a great system technologically but started w/ a high price point and hasn’t been able to roll out enough price cuts/ Exclusive Killer Apps to wow Fans. Although the Online play of the DC never really took off in its prime in Eur/Oceania/N.A… it did ok in Asia (mostly Japan)
but the Saturn was an amazing system for its time that didn’t have the networking(online play). The key for the PS3 is 2009 is the year that the new US HD standard comes into play and once more people upgrade to HD getting a PS3 will seem like less of sacrifice now that the HD-DVD format is on its way out. More will pay an avg of $200 for a Blu-ray player…and if the PS3 has a price cut to 350$ then that is about $150 more than a BLu-RAY stand-alone.
4-Although almost all ps3/x360 games are 720p(actually I have great titles for xbox that are 720p and also “HiDef” which makes the Xbox360 HD gaming marketing lie even more offensive) the real beauty of HD is on the new 2007+ HD displays which can handle 120hz refresh rates and make Blu-Ray (even on a ps3) absolutely amazing but how many people will get a new $2000+ 120hz Display?
That is the real format war that isn’t being rolled out enough in discussions…X360 might have a new system out in 3-4 years while the PS3 will be on older hardware by then the installed base of the XBLA shoppers who pay for their Transactions+ Subscriptions in Cash can make up somewhat for the Backups of Games.(Technically Backupping titles is fine..selling the Backups of stuff you didn’t make is wrong)
5-The avg price of a new release if 60$/60 quid…ouch…do people remember just a few years ago when titles were 29-39$ and about 40-50 quid…it hurts more than you think. But that is what is causing the massive Rental/ Used games market to continue to grow.
4-Although people expect play of officially downloaded titles off of the HD… it won’t happen until Flash memory SSD become better integrated into Desktops+Laptops…because then the medium speed 5400Rpm HD’s and 72000rpm Hard Disks will be significantly discounted and worthwhile for System makers like MC and Sony to use as a standard on their System.
As for Downloadable content…believe it or not its a much bigger dealbreaker on PC’s then on consoles…At the moment there are about 200 million Currently working and playing Consoles… of Which less then 40% are online…in the next Generation close to 70% will be online from day 1.
5-Last point…I’ve got 6 systems have played all the current Gen Systems and the PSP, SnES, PS2(WHICH plays all ps1/ps2 titles) and Dreamcast are my favorites when I’m not rocking VF5 for the X360.
In the long run the quality of the Blu-Ray will sell systems but how much software changes hands is key. Sony PS3’s aren’t comparable to X360’s in terms of how much the owner spends on Content right now and probably wont be until 2009-2010, but the killer apps are slowly building
1-Motorstorm 1+ and the upcoming MotorStorm 2
2-Uncharted(in HD w/ 5 Ch Surround this is an unmatched exp)
3-Metal Gear (I’d like to put Warhawk/Twisted Metal or Wipeout but they haven’t got a retail copy yet.. and online purchased copies isn’t the only way to play unless you have multiple isp’s/ routers its not even feasible for some locations.
4-Ratchet and Clank Future–
5-There is no number 5 and so the quality of the Exclusive Killer App is sorely lacking… When it picks up, The PS3 will become more and more of a leader. The key will be price
but by then, The X360 might already be approaching a 3rd Generation Xbox and possibly even higher game price points(with lower system selling points) and no possibility of Backups(ala Ps3) which could effectively keep MS in the System sales leadership in N.A. and possibly even Europe for a while to come.
i do agree M$ is being full of themselves as thinking the first 10mil in America will win … but on the other hand look at the xbox and playstation 2 … xbox had a beefer hardware but lost the war on that generation.

They’re not M$ who abandoned the Xbox a year after the 360 came out. The PlayStation was supported for 8.5 years with it’s last titles coming out in Q3 2003. The Xbox was supported for 4ish years leading up to the end of 2006 (only 3 titles were released in 2007 so you can’t count that as a full year).
How many years has the PS2 been going? It’s currently in it’s 8th year and it’s still going strong. Sony are committed to their existing install base but they are looking to move on. This is evident by them no longer providing BC updates to the PS3.
It’s down to the developer which formats they want to support so 3rd party games for the PS2 only makes more money for all parties involved.
Now M$ announce that they will make the 360 last 7 years. That is hilarious. 3 years on and they still can’t fix their faulty hardware.
Sony are in a better position to support their console for a longer period of time and they have a history of doing it. Good luck to M$ though but every new 360 SKU seems to make it morph slightly more into a PS3.

Some interesting facts are: that the PS3 has been outselling the 360 in Europe since October of 2007, the PS3 has been outselling the 360 in Japan since forever, the PS3 install base is officially larger than the 360 install base in Europe. The wii has slaughtered them both but MS isn’t in any position to claim the console wars over just because of a 360 win in the u.s. when they had a year advantage to begin with and are lagging behind on every other front.

i have a ps3 and 360 and i like them both. but i play the 360 more. better online in my opinion cuz when u pay for something its just going to be better. i like how you can download games from the xbox online as well as shows. ps3 i use more for watching movies than actually playing it. maybe ill play mgs4 but that game seems kind of dumb to me but it might be good. hiding in barrels? but i do know one game i will play and for a long time after it comes out. gears of war 2. the first one was awesome and multiplayer was fun as hell. love doing the rodeo run and super rodeo run.
I personally own a 360 and am very happy with it, have had no problems with it and I got it on the day of release. The only reason I can see for getting a PS3 is for the Blu-Ray player, but it is going to be much louder than a stand alone.
And to whoever said that we xbox owners will have to have multi-disc games…Your a moron. When games get to a point that no matter how you compress it, it will not fit on DVD9, then we are all gonna have buy new consoles as both the PS3 and 360 don’t have an awful lot of RAM, PS3-256MB 360-512MB.
If games do get that size, I suppose Microsoft could give 360 owners free HD-DVD drives and revive the format for games.

The PS3 has access to more RAM than 256MB (otherwise you wouldn’t be seeing the “PS3 only” effects in the forthcoming Ghostbusters game. These effects aren’t possible on the 360. Read it on qj.net) and M$ will NEVER use HD DVD for games, just like you will NEVER see a 360 with Blu-ray. Do you think that M$ can convince 19 million 360 owners to go out and buy a peripheral for games? What was the RRP of the HD DVD drive when it came out because I guarantee you that they wouldn’t be selling it at its current price.
HD DVD is dead, get over it. Even PC games are shipping on multiple dual layer DVD’s.

Xbox is for kids - its loud, doesnt play bluray, menus are all flashy like old arcade game + it doesnt come with the basics. PS3 Come with integrated wi-fi + bluray + other ports and connections also its has wayyyy more potential. I mean u can even install linux on it, probably xp in the future too! If u add the price of wi-fi + hddvd drive to the xbox the price will be alot higher and u will be still stuck with uselees hddvd drive.. Ps3 also has amazing media center functions, the only good thing about xbox is that it can stream tv from media center pcs..

The day the 360 came out huge masses of 20 to 30 year olds practically crowded around them and played them for hours on end. Infact it still continues to this day, the majority of Xbox 360 players are infact based in the 20-30 range.
Does anyone remember the first few days the PS3 came out, Paris, Berlin, NYC, London. Huge masses of Xbox 360 fan boys shouting and holding up banners says how crappy the PS3 was gunna be. I mean you have to admit it they were scared that Sony were gunna wipe out their precious 360.
