I tried this, TVersity and Orb. They're all much of a muchness. They stream video from your PC to your Wii via Wifi. You need a WLAN set up already. If your Wii and your PC are just connecting to the internet through a router, then you don't have a WLAN. You need to set one up. If you have a WLAN, this works okay. You just point your Wii browser to a port on your PC and it connects to the media server that's running (which is all these apps really are).

Orb works slighty differently, but in much the same manner. You install Orb on your PC and it indexes your files and then streams them to the Orb servers via the internet and then down to your Wii again via the internet. It's a tremendously inefficient way of moving video a few yards, but it works. Your friends can watch it too, but only if you like your internet connection maxed out all the time.

There is a move to create a Media Centre version of Linux to run on the Wii, but this isn't ready yet. With that you'll pop a Linux disc into your Wii, boot it up and then be able to play media off an external hard drive or similar device. But it doesn't work yet. It's not so hard a concept to program when you consider that there's already a Gamecube version of Linux.

The Wii can play video without any of this, but only if you transcode (ie convert) your files into Motion JPEG format. This is a terrible format, but the only one the Wii supports natively. Unfortunately, the biggest SD card you can stick in your Wii is 2GB and, after transcoding, that's about enough for 90 minutes of video. So you won't be watching Lord of the Rings that way.

So, I'll be waiting for Wii Linux.

Anyway, this program seems to have some issues with folders. After waiting a long time to update my "video library" in the program, I can't see my folders correctly. Some are there, others you see in a flash then they disappear…
Also, all files seems to have been recognized but to display them I have to push the "-" key, and they are not even in alphabetical order (I tried by name and by year but it doesn't change anything).
When you read a video it literally streams from your computer resulting in a crappy pixelised image (like on youtube) and the video lag (I guess it depends on the connection of course).

Getting the Wiiplayer working on your wii will allow you to play Xvids and DivX on your Wii via the USB drive. Quickly and easily. I downloaded it for no reason.

This is not over LAN but via the web the same as other apps.

From the screenshots, it appears that it's more of an app than a webpage.

I think the webpage is to provide a link to access from the Wii's Opera that will install a channel that will stream files from your PC or SD card (like the Movie on Wii app from the same company).

This program is simply a small webserver and app for your PC. The App transcodes your videos into a flash video (.flv) playable on the wii and the webserver serves up a page with the video embeded.

There is NOTHING to install on your wii, you simply use the Opera browser from the Wii Store to view the page being served up by your PC.

As this is transcoding to flash video, the quality will be terrible (think YouTube quality) and you'll have to have a reasonably fast PC to transcode the videos on-the-fly.

All in all, a waste of time unless you ONLY have a Wii and want to watch Videos on the big screen.

If you have a Modded Xbox, Modded Wii, Xbox360, PS3 or HTPC – this is a waste of time and effort for you – all the above already have much better ways of playing video than this.
