Windows XP to Media Center Edition 2005 Converter

Someone from the scene decided to release quite an interesting thing: converter, which allows you to upgrade your Windows XP to newer version, Windows Media Center Edition 2005. These two operating system are very similar so it’s not that complicated and this converter has only something above 300 MB. You don’t have to purchase Windows MCE licence of course, also your serial will remain valid.

Installation instructions aren’t that complicated:

1. Burn iso to cd.
2. Boot computer from cd. Once loaded you will see a command prompt that will make needed changes to allow MCE to be installed. You will be prompted to delete a registry key. This is to change from a dword to a string value as needed by MCE.
3. Once completed press a key and your system will reboot
4. Boot into Windows normally and run the installer autorun file.
5. After each step you MUST reboot for a proper install.
6. If you are prompted to insert your XP Disk 2 point the program at the file on the disk /cmpnents/mediactr/i386/mediactr.cab

There are also some release notes in the NFO:

If the installer program closes on it’s own at any time, reopen it either by the autorun command or open Cd_Setup.exe and try it again and it should work.

Remember, reboot after EACH step for a successful installation. The Xbox 360 users optional installation is to allow Windows MCE to communicate with Media Center Extender devices to allow for streaming across a network.

This release has been tested on Windows XP Pro, and should work fine with Corp/Vlk installations.

If Rollup 2 does not work for you please wait for the next release You will still have full functionality, without the extra updates

@ Dave
if u are having product key issues check out this web site… http://www.mydigitallife.info/2006/12/03/permanent-method-to-crack-wga-and-patch-windows-xp-inc-mce-or-2003-as-genuine/
you will have to do a little work to get to the file download but its not to hard
It will let you bypass all WGA checks and it actruly makes your system genuine. if you get your xbox 360 working let us know that is the only reason why i have been considering converting to MCE from XP Pro.

@ Tamer

You first have to change the registry, only after that you can install MCE Rollup 2.
You could try to change the registry manually, check post 87

Hope it helps

10. kal
January 6th, 2007 | 20:42

post 87 doesnt help. if u do da autorun1 it says “error: the process is being used by another program” nd “the paremeter is incorrect”……even when i say yes to delete the registry value HKLM\sys\WPA\MediaCenter /v Installed it says it can not be deleted bcos of “error: the process is being used by another program”

11. kal
January 6th, 2007 | 21:18

i cnt convert it….. so i used something called tweaknt 1.2 but tht stops me from login in to my account in normal mode a lil windows pops up sayin “the product key is not valid for this media type. please use the correct installation CD to reinstall windows. error code 0×80040509″ so wen i go into safe mode it does the same but wen i go in using safe mode with command prompt it will let me login and i run explorer and i can run media center…. so is there anyway to stop tht from poppin up?

He’s right. Post 87 Doesn’t help at all. People that have SATA drives have no way to get the CD to autorun. I’ve tried everything to get the program to work. Even tried altering the config\system myself but it says it’s being used by another process. I have no idea what it is because I closed almost all the processes in the task manager. There has to be an easier way to change the registry.

13. Nate
January 7th, 2007 | 15:48

I even tried editing the autorun1.cmd file to not use variables and it doesnt load with BartPE, it just reboots by itself so thats not an option.

I got mine working, I reinstalled Windows since i screwed it up while playing with it and it worked. I believe it has something to do with a Windows update as to why most people are stuck at the registry part. I didnt install any updates before doing it and it worked fine. I ran into problems with the rollup 2 patch but i got around that by downloading Autopatcher. Hope this helps some of you.

17. January 14th, 2007 | 14:40
yehh seeems were all stuck :[ wait untill someone clever comes along i guess
Did someone call me??

Make a new.reg file on the desktop

open it with notepad and paste the following
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\MediaCenter]
"installed"="1"
Save and run.

You can then follow the steps without using the PE environment at all.

if you visit my home site: http://www.appzpoint.net I have many other helpful things I have been releasing. Plenty of help for everyone.

January 18th, 2007 | 17:21

@ReturnOfNights

That didn’t work for me either. Same results as kal got. I checked out your site and couldn’t find any other information pertaining to this except for the same as you posted here.

21. ReturnOfNights
January 18th, 2007 | 18:15

I found out later the same Night I posted here (I never got confirmation that the post was sucessful here (sorry. . . I did check back to see but it wasn’t here I sware)!

Anyway turned out that my LastXP has disabled the monitoring for a change to this section of the registry and THAT is why the above reg code doesn’t work on standard Windows XP.

I have no Idea what I might have changed but the original download if burnt correctly once you set your BIOS to boot from CD (and if you arn’t using RAID) you’ll get into the PE environment (this will have a minamised window down under the start menu (click this hard to see window and follow the prompts) THIS is the only way you’ll probablly get you re key changed in standard XP). . .

ALTHOUGH – There are many other PE type disks for you to use to edit the Remote Registry (my LastXP disk also has a LiveXP PE environment capable of doing this). Once you load the Remote Hive (I know it all sounds daunting) but you can sucessfully change the value to 1 and not have to worry about it changing back to 0 after a reboot (REMEMBER to unload the HIVE or it wont be saved!!)

Best of luck I’ll check back to see if I can help more.

HEY xbox 360 owners forget about converting to MCE so u can stream video just download and install media player 11 on ur PC and if u haven’t already downloaded the fall update from xbox live (all u need is a silver membership its free) get it.i bet most of u have it already it does it by its self most of the time. its supports video and even HD video streaming now. Just make sure u convert the video files into WMV format which isn’t hard there are always lots of free conversion programs out there. i will be glad to help people out doing this is much as i can. hope this saves some of u some trouble

Can anyone tell me if this upgrade/update removes any features from the XP Pro side, e.g. can i connect to a domain once i have done the update?

I currently have MCE installed on my laptop, but i need to connect it to a domain. So my idea was to install XP pro and then add this upgrade/update.

Can anyone either confirm or deny, please????????

CD booted and loaded the OS but failed with a message and auto rebooted. Trying to convert XP Pro with Corp Lic to MCE2005. I did have to press F6 to load my RAID drivers. Not sure if that is causing the problem or not. I’d rather keep my RAID configuration.

My drive just won’t read it as a bootable disc…i don’t think there is anything we can do…i have tried everything. :(

46. Tim
April 9th, 2007 | 19:16

for those who are using SATA drives, see if your BIOS lets you set it to LEGACY or COMPTABILITY mode on the SATA controller or disk mode.
Works fine on my IBM r60e. I remember setting LEGACY on some Dell machine to install Linux.

@ Jenks
If your drive can read the disc in Windows, then you probably need to set your BIOS to boot from CD. If failing that, replace the CD drive.

47. Jenks
April 10th, 2007 | 08:45

My drive reads the ‘Convert XP 2 MCE’ disc perfectly when windows is loaded up and I have set the bios correctly etc it just says something like ‘No Boot device found, please insert a different disc and press any key’. I will try replacing the CD drive and give it another go. its a normal IDE hard drive so I’m guessing it should all work.

At step 6 how do you point it to the path on the Disc drive?

There must be a way, as others have done it.

Has any had a problem with this installing MediaCenter 2002 version? I went through all the steps listed and it installs fine but changes my XP Pro SP2 to MediaCenter 2002 not 2005. Rollup 2 wont work because of this … anyone have the same issue or have any ideas on why it installed 2002 and not 2005?

56. Slider
June 1st, 2007 | 20:16

Ver 2002 is correct. That’s the version of XP itself. If you open up media center, in one of the submenus, you will see the option to check the media center version. It will show 2005.

BTW: all versions of XP is 2002. The 2005 title MCE uses is used to help differentiate it from previous version of Media Center that were also built on XP 2002.

#161: That might be the same SATA problem everyone else has.

Try this:

1) Create a Vista WinPE 2.0 CD. Use this link for the easiest way to do so: http://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversion/index.php/t83722.html

2) Copy #87’s code to a batch file (maybe mce.bat or something). Save it somewhere you can find it, like the root of your C drive.

3) Boot to the WinPE disc.

c:
cd\
mce.bat

Try that.

I don’t normally comment, since my answers are normally addressed before I need to ask.

However, I MUST state that this works like a champ. As stated, do ALL updates before doing the roll out 2 install. ALL updates. Did I say to skip noncritical updates? No. ALL! LOL! Ok, enough.

After installing all updates; even some found ONLY on the MCE download/update site, roll out 2 installed and the OS functions flawless.

GL to everyone else.

Hello there I just wanted to let you all know that I think I have resolved the dependencies for those of you who cannot get rollup2 to work. You need to download .NET Framework and .Net Framework sp1, intall in that order then restart. After the computer reboots do rollup 2 and it will install fine. This worked perfectly for me. I think what was happening on my install was that the .NET 1.1 step was failing in some way and not fully installing or was missing the .NET 1.1. Well good luck guys and no you don’t need to download every update under the sun to get it working.

Hey man,

I have the exact same issue and I think I know why it happens: XP Home does not have a local user manager like Pro (lusrmgr.msc) and extender setup is trying to create a user for the extender – of course that fails.

Has anyone been able to setup media extender successfully after “upgrading” from XP Home using Beefteck’s CD???

Please let me know what you did to get over this issue.

Well…..i have read all the comments here(183) and in Demonoid(500)…. and it looks like there is no solution to bartPE problem…

I think MediaCenter will install corectly, Only if the registry value of REG_SZ is set to 1..and its not happening in my case…..

I’ve installed XRpro in D drive….and I also tried to manually Load, Add, and Delete the reg key in BartPE Succesfully…
and updates too but nothing works….

the same old stupid message at RollUp2…..Must be installed on Media Center….

If you are having problems with the file that’s supposed to run on BartPE to modify the registry (it saying that it cannot find the path or whatever) then BartPE did not map the hard drive with windows to C:\ but to a different letter. What you need to do is open the file manager to see if your Windows drive is actually C:\ or something else. If it’s something else then you have to copy the “autorun1.cmd” file that’s located on the conversion disk\I386\SYSTEM32 to your computer and edit it with notepad, modifying this line accordingly:

reg load HKLM\Sys X:\windows\system32\config\system

where “X” is your windows hard drive letter assigned by BartPE. After that you run a command window and run the modified file and it should work. If that still doesn’t work then you have to do it manually. In BartPE’s menu in one of the submenus there’s something called Load Hive. Open it and a browse window will appear, go to the Windows\System32\config and click on the system file that’s there (be sure you are browsing your actual windows drive). A window will popup with an OK button. DON’T CLICK OK! Leave the window open, it will say that it loaded HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM, although it most likely renamed SYSTEM to SYSTEM_00. In the bartpe menu click run and type regedit, there, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM_00 or whatever Load Hive renamed it. The reason it renames it is because BartPE uses a windows registry to function and it already has a SYSTEM key. When you’re in SYSTEM_00 go to the WPA and add a new key called MediaCenter and in that key create a new STRING value called Installed, double click on it and set it a value of 1. After that, close regedit and click ok on the Load Hive message. You’re done, reboot to windows and do the steps for the conversion and it should work fine. If you don’t understand something in this message then you probably shouldn’t be doing this anyway. Google is always your friend.

Good luck.

O my God…..Felix..you are mind blowin’ man…You are simply AMAZINGGGG!!!! It worked…:)

And all other guys out there..i wanna let you know that…i have read over 650 comments about this torrent (from other sites including this one) but none of them was able to solve this shity message (can only be installed on MCE) not even the guy who released that torrent, I was so disappointed that i downloaded new torrent of windows MCE(not original) and installed it but after reading Felix’s post i decided to check and reinstalled windows again…

But Felix is the first one..whos the one and only one solution worked…

This is what i did…
1. Installed windows
2. Got all the updates..(do this twice or thrice to get ALL software and optional software updates)
3. Then I changed the registry settings manually in bartPE using Load/Hive.
4.Then step 2…yes step 2(MCE install)..Skip 1st step..coz’ u have already downloaded all the updates related .NET Framework……..Then Rebooted..
5. Step 3….prollup……Then Rebooted.
6. Step 4….Rollup2…:)…..Then Reebooted.
Finished…..Its Windows MCE now….and its 2005 no matter what the properties of My Computer say

THANKS ALOT FELIX!!!!!!!!!!!………..:)

I’m very glad it worked and i hope that most people found help in my message (even though it’s a bit complicated to read if you don’t know what you’re doing).

By the way, it works fine with my Xbox 360 and the MCE Extender, normal file sharing through WMP 11 does not, although you can use TVersity for that.

Hey guys- I downloaded my copy from beefteck, but the iso included is NOT bootle. MagicISO, which is included with the file, confirmed this. Does anyone have the boot image?

I did get it installed after using my own customized version of bartPE, which i call Windows XPe. If anyone would like a copy of this, let me know– it is much more windows like than bartPE.

Hey guys, this seems to be working fine for me, including the Rollup 2, but im having trouble getting it to work with my 360…. The PC detects the 360, and vice versa, but when i go to install the setup file it gives me an error! I tried it with both the one on Microsoft’s website as well as the one provided in the ISO..

“Setup Error” – There is a problem with the installation of Windows XP MCE 2005. Uninstall the update to MCE2005 and then re-install the update from the Windows Update website”

Thing is, MCE’s working fine, and i don’t want to have to uninstall it again!! Any ideas??

TO EVERONE!!!!!
The script specifically says that it deletes the DWORD installed and it creates a REG_SZ (String Value) called the same name and the value data as 1

i learned it the hard way as kal did (#114+115) with another tool called “Offline NT Password & Registry Editor”
this is based on linux and command based
so most people wont try it this way (scared of no GUI….i was one of them….lol)

this worked after reloading windows….
SO TO ANYONE THAT HEARS TO CHANGE THE DWORD VALUE DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM!!!!

Ok uh guy above me i am getting the same problem. You probably made the same mistake as i did wich was not burning the ISO to a cd. I’m guessing you must do this do delete that registry key and allow it to make any changes to your system that can not be done while window$ xp is being ran. So your best bet is to burn the ISO to a cd, and then reboot the computer from the cd and allow it to make the changes to your system. I won’t be able to do this because i have no CD burner :(

This worked for me with XP Home. Rollup2 initially said that it wasn’t media centre 2005 edition but I did the windows updates, restarted, some more updates. Ran the Rollup2 setup from the Rollup2\Update folder and it installed fine.

Outstanding, thank you all

I just did the installation process.. Spent almost half a day trying to get it to work. I kept getting the error about “not being able to upgrade without using Media Center Edition.”
Finally I tried using BartPE to change the registry key manually, but no dice! I copied the autorun1.exe to my c: drive and used BartPE to boot my computer, used the file explorer and ran the file. Restarted my computer and ran Rollup 2! My video drivers are not compatible, but I will find newer ones that are..

How I installed it:
1. Install XP Pro VLK
2. Perform steps
