Windows XP to Media Center Edition 2005 Converter
Someone from the scene decided to release quite an interesting thing: converter, which allows you to upgrade your Windows XP to newer version, Windows Media Center Edition 2005. These two operating system are very similar so it’s not that complicated and this converter has only something above 300 MB. You don’t have to purchase Windows MCE licence of course, also your serial will remain valid.
Installation instructions aren’t that complicated:
1. Burn iso to cd.
2. Boot computer from cd. Once loaded you will see a command prompt that will make needed changes to allow MCE to be installed. You will be prompted to delete a registry key. This is to change from a dword to a string value as needed by MCE.
3. Once completed press a key and your system will reboot
4. Boot into Windows normally and run the installer autorun file.
5. After each step you MUST reboot for a proper install.
6. If you are prompted to insert your XP Disk 2 point the program at the file on the disk /cmpnents/mediactr/i386/mediactr.cab
There are also some release notes in the NFO:
If the installer program closes on it’s own at any time, reopen it either by the autorun command or open Cd_Setup.exe and try it again and it should work.
Remember, reboot after EACH step for a successful installation. The Xbox 360 users optional installation is to allow Windows MCE to communicate with Media Center Extender devices to allow for streaming across a network.
This release has been tested on Windows XP Pro, and should work fine with Corp/Vlk installations.
If Rollup 2 does not work for you please wait for the next release You will still have full functionality, without the extra updates

does this need a clean install or can you simply upgrade keeping all your old settings and installed apps?
there’s nothing about this in the NFO but I think it *could* keep everything… try to make some backup with Norton Ghost or something like this and apply this patch…
yup please try and let us know it would be quite interesting to know if this works.
OOh, I want to change my laptop from XP home to this. Please post a torrent! And a torrent for Norton Ghost in case it fucks me up…
please send me windows xp media center which I really wanted
thanks in advance
thanks.
hmm…i just switched from MCE to XP Pro… personally im not really interested, but good release none the less.
Has anyuone spotted the torrent around for this?
Could safe me a reinstall.
bump?
Works a charm no need to back up as everything stays on your hard drive.
Just remember to reboot after each install.
Hey niftey, where’d you get it?
does this work on xp home?
where can I find the .torrent file or something like that (no newsgroups) ? thanx mates
torrent @ mininova
Here it is -> http://www.mininova.org/tor/363639
it is legit, just tested it on xp pro uk
Anyone know if it leaves WinXP Pro portions intact? I still want to connect to domains, and native WinMCE can’t do that. Thanks!
I just installed it on my XP Home OEM installation, worked perfect. I was even a dumbass and did the autorun thing to install MCE before running that boot thing, and it still works.
Did the cd boot thing and it was saying it couldn’t find what it was looking for and incorrect parameters. I have xp pro.
what registry changes was the first part supposed to make? mine didn’t work.
can someone post a working torrent the one above dont work with my torrentopia
Hi
Whoever said it works in Windows Xp Home is a dumbass, i tried and now when i log into windows it crashes after a few seconds. Going to have to restore to registry, serves me right for believing some egg that saidi t worked on home i guess.
Hey…can anyone get their XBOX 360 working with the Media Center, after they applied this?
Btw, everything works perfectly for me…just my 360 wont connect with the Media Center
Craig, you are a douche. and you love the cock. there is no reason to be a prick to someone that you don’t even know who probably installed it properly and you didn’t.
fucker.
JoeSchmoe, firstly stfu, secondly i know exactly what i was doing thats why i can easily fixing it back now im just giving a warning to everyone to not listen to people like that who talk outa their arses, you simply cant go from xp home to media center edition u need pro to convert to media center. Again stfu i am merely trying to help others that upgrading from HOME will not work.
i’ve tried this and works perfectly as media centre on xp home, can’t get rollup 2 to work though, waiting for next release!!
Any one had any luck installing extender for 360 with this?
works here on xp pro and 360 mce functionality ..just wish i could get transcode 360 to work
Links are good as of today. I have not downloaded yet as I was researching what this software was. Be sure to scan files 1st. I repeat. I have NOT tested these yet. Please respond back here as I will follow up on this. I’m curious too.
akira….how did you get the 360 mce to work????
I called M$ support but they cant help me
Martin, could you please tell me what registry changes need to be made. The first part did not work and I would like to try manually. Thanks.
when i first instlaled i didnt boot form the cd and just installed from the auto rub, how ever stupid me, i read the info, and i booted form the cd no the registery is getting some error on that prompt thingy, so im guessing i did sumin wrong, ill try and do a system restore to try and fix it and reinstall it and see if this made any difrence.
nope windows restor doesnt Work. i dont know FTW WTF
Re: inability to install Rollup 2:
“Not only do you need dot net framwork 1.1 you also need Media Player 10 installed for the Roll Up 2 to work, I had the same problems, updated, and Roll Up 2 installed with no trouble at all.”
(The CD has .NET 1.0, so upgrade that and install Windows Media Player 10, then the rollup)
If you try to use this to upgrade from Xp home it wont work, the registry key overwrites the existing windows xp key and causes random chrashes and errors on startup. Solution : Reinstall windows or restore the registry through safe mode.
hey.. cant get the reg edit thingo to work… could i do it manually? can someone tell me what changes were made on the boot thing. THX
Sam, I had the same problem. If you get any idea what to do in the first dos part please post here!! I will do the same if I get this problem solved.
Has anyone tried this from a WinXp Pro VLK (corporate license)?
The BartPE portion didn’t work on my system — no AHCI SATA drivers.
However, once I booted Vista and edited the drive letter in a (copy of) the script, it imported the registry and changed it correctly.
Of course, for me it was pointless — I have no TV tuner, and I use Winamp and Media Player Classic.
Oh yeah, all the Pro stuff seems to still be there.
Dana…what script did you change?
on my Windows XP Corp version it does not work. The typical “Media center only works on windows xp media center edition” error appears.
i had problems at first all i did is reinstall windows xp install the media center stuff upto the roll up 2 files then update windows will all available updates do install and programs (like nero, office ect)then the rollup files will work. after that finish off installing all your programs. one thing if u want to get the media center extender set up to stream to your xbox 360 do not install nero as this does something to make it not work dunno what but with nero in the pc setup file for the 360 wont install. follow this and everything should work.
after reinstalling Windows XP Corp (= XP Pro with Volume licencing key), and retrying the converter, it works fine! Apparently my old installation was to messed up.
Now, MCE works! Except for the last step: the Rollup 2 does not want to install as it states MCE is required for te update to install.
Great tool!!
Anyone know why the 360 setup wont work? It always finds a error while installing .NET Framework 1.1 SP1, says I can close it or debug, Doesnt work >_
Worked here but ehome reciever wont install…anyone got drivers for it ?
If step 4 (installing rollup update 2) fails, you might try visiting Windows Update. On my machine it installed additional MCE specific patches. After rebooting I could install the Rollup Update 2, while before I got the error it could only be installed on XP MCE 2005… worked for me.
Part one fails because it doesnt see your harddrive. I’m guessing this happens if you had to install drivers (F6 during setup) when you first installed XP…to get aroudn this plug your harddrives into a ide port that doesnt require you to install drivers on an initial xp install.
Hey..
Been trying to use this to setup akimbo.. with no luck akimbo is saying i do not have MCE installed. Anyone happen to know of away to get around this?
Thanks
@47
you can also use F6 during part one (when the CD starts loading) to load your drivers. No need to plug your HD in an IDE port. At least not on my machine.
@48
I also noticed that some programs refuse to install. For instance the MS tweak MCE powertoy cannot be installed.
My notebook’s hard drive is on SATA, and there is no floppy drive.
I had to boot into a different Windows OS, then copy the MCE folder on the CD to the desktop. I edited one of the scripts (I forget which) that said “REG LOAD C:\ ….” to reflect the correct XP partition. Once I ran it then, I was able to boot back into XP and go on.
I tried this a few times – even with a fresh install of winxp sp2 – same issue with bart pe every time. It gets to the bart pe screen then my screen goes black. My computer stays on but my monitor is black. Let it sit for 30 minutes and still stays black. Not sure if it is because it is set up for a VGA cable as I only have a DVI cable and screen that accepts DVI or if it is having a problem with my X850 video card. I tried to use f6 to install the drivers for my Promise 378 SATA controller but that didn’t work either.
Is there a way to just import the registry change or modify the registry by hand to get around the bart pe setup?
Is there a newer version with fixes for some of the issues listed above?
Thanks

Sorry for the dupes – I thought it was going to send an authorization to my e-mail and since I wasn’t getting anything in my e-mail I tried more than one account.
Anyone know what the registry edits are? I just want to mod the registry to trick a media center screen saver into thinking i’m running MCE. Thanks!
where do I download a copy of this XP pro to MCE converter?
Anyone had issues simply running the autorun file? I installed the XP corp volume license, and it crashes when I run the autorun on the cd. thanks!
In the instructions it says:
6. If you are prompted to insert your XP Disk 2 point the program at the file on the disk /cmpnents/mediactr/i386/mediactr.cab
But how do i do this?it just keeps saying insert XP service pack 2 cd and i can choose retry, more information or cancel.when i cancel it comes up again. What do i do? Any help would be greatly appreciated
kool
I cant get rollup 2 to work, step 4. I also get an error during MCE 05 instal. Media Center works. X360 doesnt work.
very good program
where can i download this converter program?
Hi all, I installed the program with no problems butt can’t get it to find my tv tunner and I know is a compatible one. (WinTV-PVR 150) any ideas?
http://www.btmon.com/Applications/Unsorted/XP_Pro_to_Media_Center_Edition_2005_Converter.torrent.html
I just found a torrent link for you to download the converter. It is Estimated as Fast with 20 seeders at already 75kb per second!
[...] Lets face it, your not going to do almost any of the things you did with the original Xbox on your 360 because some of it is already apart of Xbox Live. With the Fall Update you can stream wmv files from Media Player 11. You can use the 360 as a Media Center if you have Media Center PC and even if you don’t have a Media Center PC there are way around it. It’s not going to be a ftp server with only a 20gig hard drive but there might be a 60gig hard drive soon. [...]
im am sort of new to xp and i have the file but it is in some sort of .rar format it is the correct size though 27 items in all do i just burn that on cd or how do i do this i have not attempted it yet i am very poor and i pulled my computer out of a dumpster so if that says any thing i dont have many cds to try this with. could some one give me some insite please or post a very detailed walk through. i would be very thank full
i tell ya people, this os converter works! i never had any problems before and after install. after the installation, i manage to get a full latest update of mce at microsoft update site with no errors at all. btw, im on winxp pro and this os converter is a must get on those planning to upgrade to mce (specially on streamin purposes ie. xbox360). to the scene group who made this happen, i thank them a lot. now my winxp pro is officially a mce.
Can’t get it to work, when I come to install rollback 2 it comes up with an error message can only be installed on xp media center edition 2005.
I have inistalled as per instruction starting with the boot from CD etc, etc and and restarted after every section. I have tried formating my HD and starting from scratch with xp pro and then installing the software, however no luck!!!!
ANY IDEAS????
PS I FORGOT TO MENTION I ONLY GET THIS MESSAGE WHEN INSTALLING PART 4 ROLLUP 2
I have the same problem as Nick, listed above. However, I am installing a new version of .netframework, as well as windows media player 10 and Microsoft XP SP2. I hope this resolves the problem, will let you know. However, if this does not work and you know the possible cause, please let me know. Thank You.
I also had difficulty with rollup 2. I followed these instructions to install it manually.
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2006/05/22/604380.aspx
I installed XP Service Pack 2, .net framework version 1.1 and the service pack, and windows media player 10 – still no luck. I tried the link above, do not understand. I still cannot install rollup 2 – says it must be installed on Media Center. I also got an error during the process that said something along the lines of, “can not register Media Center.” Please help
P.S. – The media center componets are installed on my desktop, ie, the shortcut to media center. As well as the sample pictures in my documents and the themes under desktop display properties. However, when I try to run media center an error pops up that say it can only be run on media center edition.
Hey guys! I got the download and I can not boot up the CD!
Ok here is my problem.
Step 2, I boot the pc from CD and when it is loaded I will get a promt to edit reg.
This does not happen. Basically how do I boot my pc from the CD?!?
please send help to adamn@rcn.com or here is fine thanks!
PROBLEM WITH STEP 4?
Visit Windows Update and install all available updates (especially .NET related and MCE related), reboot your PC. Then Update Rollup2 can be installed. I tried this on 2 machines with success
Well I am having a problem booting the CD, The Command Prompt will not pop-up and let me make changes… any help?
Also for people who do not want to use torrents and so on, I uploaded a full package of everything you need to do this HERE: http://www.pspiso.com/index.php?topic=4967.msg33798#msg33798
Just sign up and go there and that is my post with everything you need!
Enjoy!
@Beefteck
that site is currently closed to registrations, any chance you can up it to a free site like mediafire.com
they have no file limits, no logins and no stupid popups like other file upload sites
Set my bios to boot from CD, but boot from CD fails and requests system disk/ OS(hard drive). I continued installing everything in order and rebooting after everystep. Running into Rollup 2 issue, and when I go to access media center I also get the Media Center can only be accessed on a media center PC. Any help??

Just found it in a newsgroup… got it to work on my xp pro.. and windows genuine still checks… great! But, don’t install IE7, it’ll mess up your cover arts, I had to uninstall IE7 in order to recover the CD artworks.
how did you install it? The only problem i am still having is reg. edit part to install it…
So I’ve had a converted version of MC from this for a few months, and it still works, but I’d like to uninstall it, because MC sucks compared to just using iTunes and Media Player Classic – and I hate how it always runs extra services in the background.
send media center edition
If you cant figure out how to install this program I suggest you just go ahead and pay for the upgrade from XP Pro 2 MCE. Another bit of free info I will let you in on is if you are running a 64bit system, DONT SWITCH TI VISTA. Even though they claim to have a final version out, it is a POS. If you care about your CPU stick with XP Pro x64. For those of you that can still find your way around a computer, including DOS, stay away from VISTA. It makes things way too complicated, and you loose control over way too many aspects of your machine. Anyway, what do I know, I’m only a doctor.
As mentioned above by a few people I don’t get the registry change either (says it’s not there). Could anyone please tell me what registry changes need to be made. The first part did not work and I would like to try manually.
I have two puters, both Dells. 1 running Dell’s XP Pro and the other running a corp XP Pro (which is a clean install on D drive) and I can’t get it to work on either puter. I get the same registry error on both computers.
On the XP corp (D drive) I need to edit the install file to direct it to the D drive registry. C drive has w98 on it but it autoboots into XP.
Thanks for any help.
Ok, did some digging after copying the CD to my hard drive. May have found what we are looking for.
The file name is Autorun1.cmd and is in the MCE\I386\system32 folder. I’ve included the file in TXT format.
cls
@echo Loading the standard windows Registry
reg load HKLM\Sys c:\windows\system32\config\system
@echo Making Changes to the Registry
reg add HKLM\Sys\WPA\MediaCenter
reg delete HKLM\sys\WPA\MediaCenter /v Installed
reg add HKLM\sys\WPA\MediaCenter /v Installed /t REG_SZ /d 1
@echo
@echo Done. After you press a key your computer will restart.
@echo If you need to remove the cd to boot into windows remember to do so.
@echo Remember to reboot after each step.
pause
reboot
Hope this helps
Another thing I just noticed. In the cmd taken from above it reads (sys)
@echo Making Changes to the Registry
reg add HKLM\Sys\WPA\MediaCenter
I don’t have a sys in my registry but if I go to HKLM\System\WPA\MediaCenter in the reg its there. Colud this be causing our problems and if so, why do some systems have sys instead of system?
Your turn! lol
’sys’ just acts as a variable in the script. It is assigned the c:\windows\system32\config\system hive in the first command. I had the same registry problem…
thanx
so can this problem be fixed and can someone do it??? like add it up to the converter??? That would b sick
Refering to the Rollup 2. It caused me no end of pain and searching but in the end, an earlier post #46 was correct. Install everything you can get off of the Microsoft site and then as if by magic it works, thanks.
Hi Peeps, I have it all installed and i get the “…. can only be run on xp media….” error I notice that my registry is listing the HKLM\sys\WPA\MediaCenter\installed as value 0 when im guessing that this needs to be value 1? is that correct?
the system will not let me edit this value in windows, is there any way that i can edit it outside of windows? i have vista dual booting, can i edit the XP registry from there?
Thanks
Dazzler
ok thats a no! lol managed to edit the reg in vista, rebooted into xp and i get a product key error and it logs out….. if anyone has any other ideas on this please add em on!
Dazzler
Finaly got it to work. On boot to CD hit F6 and install ur drivers. Intel Ultra ATA storage controllers (SATA AHCI) in my case. DEll XPS with SATA drives.
Works great but I would suggest truning off firewall/anti-virus during uinstall just to save some hassel.
Lots of luck!
hello
still cant gt to it to do part one
any other solutions.??
hello?
heyy guys … you can do this.
This is how i installed RollUp 2 (KB900325) after getting error messages
download KB900325 from MS or elsewhere. Unzip or unrar pakkage; once done..locate in ‘bin’ folder another kb900325 (selfextracting cab)….unzip or unrar…and you’ll find an ‘update’ folder, run the setup.exe that’s located in that folder.
Worked for me…..hope it helps….
Windows XP Home SP 2 (now with MCE….:-))
How do I download this file?????
how do u you do the boot up from cd part?
im using a winfast 760GXK8MC motherboard and everytimei change the boot sequence it doesnt load up from cd rom
i cnt convert it so i used tweaknt 1.2 but tht stops me from login in to my account in normal mode a lil windows pops up sayin “the product key is not valid for this media type. please use the correct installation CD to reinstall windows. error code 0×80040509″ so wen i go into safe mode with command prompt it will let me login so is there anyway to stop tht from poppin up?
Ok.
So I’ve just got a 360 for christmas and i’d consider myself fairly decent at computers, I have Media Centre images mounted with Daemon Tools, when I try to install it asks for my XP Product key, so I type that in CORRECTLY and it still says invalid.
I assume that you have to burn the discs and boot them or can I just mount them with Daemon but what about the product key?
Many Thanks.
@ sounddie:
try here:
http://www.download3k.com/Install-Update-Rollup-2-for-Windows-XP-Media-Center-Edition-2005.html
i can’t it to work, it wont boot so then i install it step1 then the rest but when i come to install the rollup2 update it says ‘can only install on windows mce’ please help
@ Dave
if u are having product key issues check out this web site… http://www.mydigitallife.info/2006/12/03/permanent-method-to-crack-wga-and-patch-windows-xp-inc-mce-or-2003-as-genuine/
you will have to do a little work to get to the file download but its not to hard
It will let you bypass all WGA checks and it actruly makes your system genuine. if you get your xbox 360 working let us know that is the only reason why i have been considering converting to MCE from XP Pro.
can anyone help
@Tamar
check post 99 in this thread, hope it helps.
i still keep getting can only install with windows media centre 2005
Hey everyone If you realy want MCE 2005 check this link out http://www.torrentportal.com/details/188186/
it is less of a challenge that way and not as much fun but for those lazy people it will work nicely and work fine with that lovely white box called xbox 360
hay i tried using this earyer on today and hadent sen this post im am so gratful i found this i shall try doing the onversion tomorrow after all the hasle i had withit today thatx very ppl ill let u know how it goes and if i get the 360 to connect
@ Tamer
You first have to change the registry, only after that you can install MCE Rollup 2.
You could try to change the registry manually, check post 87
Hope it helps
post 87 doesnt help. if u do da autorun1 it says “error: the process is being used by another program” nd “the paremeter is incorrect”……even when i say yes to delete the registry value HKLM\sys\WPA\MediaCenter /v Installed it says it can not be deleted bcos of “error: the process is being used by another program”
i cnt convert it….. so i used something called tweaknt 1.2 but tht stops me from login in to my account in normal mode a lil windows pops up sayin “the product key is not valid for this media type. please use the correct installation CD to reinstall windows. error code 0Ă—80040509″ so wen i go into safe mode it does the same but wen i go in using safe mode with command prompt it will let me login and i run explorer and i can run media center…. so is there anyway to stop tht from poppin up?
He’s right. Post 87 Doesn’t help at all. People that have SATA drives have no way to get the CD to autorun. I’ve tried everything to get the program to work. Even tried altering the config\system myself but it says it’s being used by another process. I have no idea what it is because I closed almost all the processes in the task manager. There has to be an easier way to change the registry.
I even tried editing the autorun1.cmd file to not use variables and it doesnt load with BartPE, it just reboots by itself so thats not an option.
i cnt even boot up from cd, cnt use bart pe cos it doenst find windows installation files, help greatly appreciated
yehh seeems were all stuck :[ wait untill someone clever comes along i guess
x
I got mine working, I reinstalled Windows since i screwed it up while playing with it and it worked. I believe it has something to do with a Windows update as to why most people are stuck at the registry part. I didnt install any updates before doing it and it worked fine. I ran into problems with the rollup 2 patch but i got around that by downloading Autopatcher. Hope this helps some of you.
yehh seeems were all stuck :[ wait untill someone clever comes along i guess
Did someone call me??
Make a new.reg file on the desktop
open it with notepad and paste the following
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\MediaCenter]
"installed"="1"
Save and run.
You can then follow the steps without using the PE environment at all.
if you visit my home site: http://www.appzpoint.net I have many other helpful things I have been releasing. Plenty of help for everyone.
Nightwolf81 aka ReturnOfNights (RON)
hmmm “you can only import registry files’
no return of nights, that dont work either, it says its successfully been done but there is no change to that value it jus stays as 0
@ReturnOfNights
That didn’t work for me either. Same results as kal got. I checked out your site and couldn’t find any other information pertaining to this except for the same as you posted here.
I found out later the same Night I posted here (I never got confirmation that the post was sucessful here (sorry. . . I did check back to see but it wasn’t here I sware)!
Anyway turned out that my LastXP has disabled the monitoring for a change to this section of the registry and THAT is why the above reg code doesn’t work on standard Windows XP.
I have no Idea what I might have changed but the original download if burnt correctly once you set your BIOS to boot from CD (and if you arn’t using RAID) you’ll get into the PE environment (this will have a minamised window down under the start menu (click this hard to see window and follow the prompts) THIS is the only way you’ll probablly get you re key changed in standard XP). . .
ALTHOUGH – There are many other PE type disks for you to use to edit the Remote Registry (my LastXP disk also has a LiveXP PE environment capable of doing this). Once you load the Remote Hive (I know it all sounds daunting) but you can sucessfully change the value to 1 and not have to worry about it changing back to 0 after a reboot (REMEMBER to unload the HIVE or it wont be saved!!)
Best of luck I’ll check back to see if I can help more.
Does anyone have and updated torrent link to update windows media center 2005..?
trying to link up the xbox to the pc to the plasma tv..
HEY xbox 360 owners forget about converting to MCE so u can stream video just download and install media player 11 on ur PC and if u haven’t already downloaded the fall update from xbox live (all u need is a silver membership its free) get it.i bet most of u have it already it does it by its self most of the time. its supports video and even HD video streaming now. Just make sure u convert the video files into WMV format which isn’t hard there are always lots of free conversion programs out there. i will be glad to help people out doing this is much as i can. hope this saves some of u some trouble
–The General–
then how do u make ur pc boot from cd? everytime i change it from bios it still dont work.
I love everything about this site!!
For step 4, .NET framework 1.1 with SP1 is required. Without .NET SP1, rollup 2 cannot be installed.
so does this work or not?
Hi everyone this CD is great I manage to upgrade my xp pro(VLK) to MCE and it works with my xbox 360, I got an erro during phase 2 but it worked anyway.
see ya
PS: before I launch the CD I installed framework 1.1 SP1, 2.0 & 3.0only the first is mandatory so Idirectly launch phase 2, maybe it will help some of you having trouble with this
firstly how do u launch it, even after changin the boot sequence in BIOS setup?
de, – Sunday, February 22, 2004 at 11:47:29 (PST)

Can anyone tell me if this upgrade/update removes any features from the XP Pro side, e.g. can i connect to a domain once i have done the update?
I currently have MCE installed on my laptop, but i need to connect it to a domain. So my idea was to install XP pro and then add this upgrade/update.
Can anyone either confirm or deny, please????????
How to hell do i download this file? Please send me the iso-file, and not the “torrent-file” – i haven’t got BitTorrent…
where is the torrent?

CD booted and loaded the OS but failed with a message and auto rebooted. Trying to convert XP Pro with Corp Lic to MCE2005. I did have to press F6 to load my RAID drivers. Not sure if that is causing the problem or not. I’d rather keep my RAID configuration.
tnx
got it installed but cant get the 360 to play downloaded movies does anyone have anyideas …thanks…
does anyone know if divx/xvid or avi need to be converted to streem through the 360 …

hey i need help gettin the iso thing idk what ur talkin about on that one can u help me out on it plz thanks
Can anyone help, i cannot boot from the cd, what is the process to get it to boot? does it involve putting the xp cd in and booting from that, then pressing f6 to load the drivers?
Same Here,
My drive just won’t read it as a bootable disc…i don’t think there is anything we can do…i have tried everything.
for those who are using SATA drives, see if your BIOS lets you set it to LEGACY or COMPTABILITY mode on the SATA controller or disk mode.
Works fine on my IBM r60e. I remember setting LEGACY on some Dell machine to install Linux.
@ Jenks
If your drive can read the disc in Windows, then you probably need to set your BIOS to boot from CD. If failing that, replace the CD drive.
My drive reads the ‘Convert XP 2 MCE’ disc perfectly when windows is loaded up and I have set the bios correctly etc it just says something like ‘No Boot device found, please insert a different disc and press any key’. I will try replacing the CD drive and give it another go. its a normal IDE hard drive so I’m guessing it should all work.
At step 6 how do you point it to the path on the Disc drive?
As above I only get the option to retry, More Information or Cancel
There must be a way, as others have done it.
has anyone got a link to this torrent?? I really need this one.
I did get it to work in my WINXP HE SP2…I did install the rollup thing, however, I don’t know if I did something wrong, cause I can’t copy music to my PC from the Media Center, can’t see album art, cant visualize almost anything, even videos don’t play at all…I don’t know what went wrong, but I’m reinstalling xp he again…nice port however!
Sometime after installing the upgrade sudden;y every device I install in XP is seen as “unsigned” (even my PS/2 keyboard driver). Has anyone else seen this?
I asume u guys who cant get it to boot have burned the iso with an iso burning program right? It works fine for me, except i cant get the rollup 2 thing to work…. and when i start it it says my video card/drivers are not supported… any ideas?
thanks….
ok for the life of me i cant make the cd boot ive set the bios to check the cd rom first according to magic iso the cd is bootable but it wont boot. what am i missing ? how did you make the cd bootable?
yes how do you make this boot from the cd there are not boot files on the disc it says ‘Invalid System disc’
Has any had a problem with this installing MediaCenter 2002 version? I went through all the steps listed and it installs fine but changes my XP Pro SP2 to MediaCenter 2002 not 2005. Rollup 2 wont work because of this … anyone have the same issue or have any ideas on why it installed 2002 and not 2005?
Ver 2002 is correct. That’s the version of XP itself. If you open up media center, in one of the submenus, you will see the option to check the media center version. It will show 2005.
BTW: all versions of XP is 2002. The 2005 title MCE uses is used to help differentiate it from previous version of Media Center that were also built on XP 2002.
After the BartPE starts, and the command prompt comes up, and asks (Y/N) I hit Y and then it says it can’t find the file. Any suggestions? Should I change the path to C:\ instead of the disc’s X:\ ?

#161: That might be the same SATA problem everyone else has.
Try this:
1) Create a Vista WinPE 2.0 CD. Use this link for the easiest way to do so: http://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversion/index.php/t83722.html
2) Copy #87’s code to a batch file (maybe mce.bat or something). Save it somewhere you can find it, like the root of your C drive.
3) Boot to the WinPE disc.
c:
cd\
mce.bat
Try that.
hey has anyone tried overwriting vista business with this yet.. or is there a copy of media center that you can overwrite business with seen as i use a volume key for business cba getting ultimate TOO expensive.
Unfortunately, I have the same results, as do many. The above solutions don’t seem to work. I’ve posted this on Mvidia’s site, but thought I’d put my info here as well…
I’m about tearing my hair out here. I’m trying to upgrade to MCE 2005, but when using the BartPE application to do so, it asks me to load my raid drivers. I try to do so, and it never, repeat, NEVER, no matter what I try, is able to load them. It always replies that the nvraid.sys drivers aren’t able to be found. I will lay out my pertinent equipment for you, and what I have tried.
First and foremost, I am running XP SP2, in a RAID 0 array, and things are working fine, but I decided to upgrade to MCE 2005, and that’s where things got interesting…
Asus P5ND2-SLI-SE Deluxe mobo, newest bios
Intel P4 Core 2 Duo e6500
2 GB Corsair 800mhz pro ram
2 Hitachi deskstar 80 gb drives, in raid o array sata 1 & 2
1 Hitachi deskstar 300 gb drive sata 3
1 Hitachi deskstar 80 gb drive sata 4
XFX 8800GTS
I have read numerous posts, but mostly all of them seem to apply to the AMD Nvidia boards, and I’m not sure if the workarounds suggested there differ from the Intel platforms.
I have used driver pack 6.86, 7.15, and The Unified Remix 11.15.
I’ve used Asus’ driver making disc utility.
I’ve copied the files from IDE/SataRAID folders onto the floppy (8 of them)
I did the whole F6, “S”, enter for both files, “S” again, enter for both files thing.
I tried someone’s suggestion to modify the text setup file, but I think the lines I was modifying, again, were for AMD boards, and that might cause problems?
Either way, the stupid thing never is able find the nvraid.sys file. Is there any hope or help? Because it didn’t find those files, MCE didn’t install correctly, and is all screwed up. My OS still works right, but things are all wonky, and I believe it’s this part that is holding things back.
I love this site, there is so much information to be found. Thank you.
thanks
I don’t normally comment, since my answers are normally addressed before I need to ask.
However, I MUST state that this works like a champ. As stated, do ALL updates before doing the roll out 2 install. ALL updates. Did I say to skip noncritical updates? No. ALL! LOL! Ok, enough.
After installing all updates; even some found ONLY on the MCE download/update site, roll out 2 installed and the OS functions flawless.
GL to everyone else.
After I do the first step I get an error saying “this license is not right for this media type” or something to that degree. I have a genuine copy of windows and I don’t wan’t to use another key! How can I get around this??????
Oh almost forgot that I have a corporate key.
i followed all the steps and everything installed perfect but when i open media center it comes up with a blank screen and up the top it has blue lines and you can’t see anything.
if anyone has an idea as to whats gone wrong please help me
im having issues with step 2. it keep saying things about certain files not being found and illegal operation crap. basically every time i click on media center , it just keeps on repeating messages of just in time debugging….anyone wish to help me out?
Hello there I just wanted to let you all know that I think I have resolved the dependencies for those of you who cannot get rollup2 to work. You need to download .NET Framework and .Net Framework sp1, intall in that order then restart. After the computer reboots do rollup 2 and it will install fine. This worked perfectly for me. I think what was happening on my install was that the .NET 1.1 step was failing in some way and not fully installing or was missing the .NET 1.1. Well good luck guys and no you don’t need to download every update under the sun to get it working.

Hey man,
I have the exact same issue and I think I know why it happens: XP Home does not have a local user manager like Pro (lusrmgr.msc) and extender setup is trying to create a user for the extender – of course that fails.
Has anyone been able to setup media extender successfully after “upgrading” from XP Home using Beefteck’s CD???
Please let me know what you did to get over this issue.
thanks!

Well…..i have read all the comments here(183) and in Demonoid(500)…. and it looks like there is no solution to bartPE problem…
I think MediaCenter will install corectly, Only if the registry value of REG_SZ is set to 1..and its not happening in my case…..
I’ve installed XRpro in D drive….and I also tried to manually Load, Add, and Delete the reg key in BartPE Succesfully…
and updates too but nothing works….
the same old stupid message at RollUp2…..Must be installed on Media Center….
I think i’ll have to dump this torrent and download the new one…

this torrent looks much better and 107 seeds
If you are having problems with the file that’s supposed to run on BartPE to modify the registry (it saying that it cannot find the path or whatever) then BartPE did not map the hard drive with windows to C:\ but to a different letter. What you need to do is open the file manager to see if your Windows drive is actually C:\ or something else. If it’s something else then you have to copy the “autorun1.cmd” file that’s located on the conversion disk\I386\SYSTEM32 to your computer and edit it with notepad, modifying this line accordingly:
reg load HKLM\Sys X:\windows\system32\config\system
where “X” is your windows hard drive letter assigned by BartPE. After that you run a command window and run the modified file and it should work. If that still doesn’t work then you have to do it manually. In BartPE’s menu in one of the submenus there’s something called Load Hive. Open it and a browse window will appear, go to the Windows\System32\config and click on the system file that’s there (be sure you are browsing your actual windows drive). A window will popup with an OK button. DON’T CLICK OK! Leave the window open, it will say that it loaded HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM, although it most likely renamed SYSTEM to SYSTEM_00. In the bartpe menu click run and type regedit, there, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM_00 or whatever Load Hive renamed it. The reason it renames it is because BartPE uses a windows registry to function and it already has a SYSTEM key. When you’re in SYSTEM_00 go to the WPA and add a new key called MediaCenter and in that key create a new STRING value called Installed, double click on it and set it a value of 1. After that, close regedit and click ok on the Load Hive message. You’re done, reboot to windows and do the steps for the conversion and it should work fine. If you don’t understand something in this message then you probably shouldn’t be doing this anyway. Google is always your friend.
Good luck.
O my God…..Felix..you are mind blowin’ man…You are simply AMAZINGGGG!!!! It worked…:)
And all other guys out there..i wanna let you know that…i have read over 650 comments about this torrent (from other sites including this one) but none of them was able to solve this shity message (can only be installed on MCE) not even the guy who released that torrent, I was so disappointed that i downloaded new torrent of windows MCE(not original) and installed it but after reading Felix’s post i decided to check and reinstalled windows again…
But Felix is the first one..whos the one and only one solution worked…
This is what i did…
1. Installed windows
2. Got all the updates..(do this twice or thrice to get ALL software and optional software updates)
3. Then I changed the registry settings manually in bartPE using Load/Hive.
4.Then step 2…yes step 2(MCE install)..Skip 1st step..coz’ u have already downloaded all the updates related .NET Framework……..Then Rebooted..
5. Step 3….prollup……Then Rebooted.
6. Step 4….Rollup2…:)…..Then Reebooted.
Finished…..Its Windows MCE now….and its 2005 no matter what the properties of My Computer say
THANKS ALOT FELIX!!!!!!!!!!!………..:)
BTW in order to install update rollup 2 you need to do the following:
1. download uniextract (google it)
2. run installer(S)
I havent tested it with the xbox360 though so please tell me if it does.
I’m very glad it worked and i hope that most people found help in my message (even though it’s a bit complicated to read if you don’t know what you’re doing).
By the way, it works fine with my Xbox 360 and the MCE Extender, normal file sharing through WMP 11 does not, although you can use TVersity for that.
Hey guys- I downloaded my copy from beefteck, but the iso included is NOT bootle. MagicISO, which is included with the file, confirmed this. Does anyone have the boot image?
I did get it installed after using my own customized version of bartPE, which i call Windows XPe. If anyone would like a copy of this, let me know– it is much more windows like than bartPE.
man 100+ comments. hard to read. finally some sure shot way to convert xp to media center?
there is a lot of mention of a ~17MB file to convert xp to MCE but i cant find a download link anywhere.. anyone?

Instructions:
If you can’t get the CD to boot, follow these:
1. Use ERD Commander (or similar boot disk) and change this key, HKLM\SYSTEM\WPA\MediaCenter\Installed … from 0 to 1…reboot back into Windows
2. Run all Windows Updates…reboot
3. Run Step 2 from CD…reboot
4. Run Step 3 from CD…reboot
5. Run Step 4 from CD…reboot
I have downloaded the two files needed successfully, these are .uif extensions. I am having problems installing it. I used Nero and I did copy an ISO image to the HD, but I don’t know how to burn it to a CD and then run it. Can someone please help?
Can someone tell me if this is 32 bit or 64 ?
I’m looking for a MS 64 bit OS
TIA for any help
Hey guys, this seems to be working fine for me, including the Rollup 2, but im having trouble getting it to work with my 360…. The PC detects the 360, and vice versa, but when i go to install the setup file it gives me an error! I tried it with both the one on Microsoft’s website as well as the one provided in the ISO..
“Setup Error” – There is a problem with the installation of Windows XP MCE 2005. Uninstall the update to MCE2005 and then re-install the update from the Windows Update website”
Thing is, MCE’s working fine, and i don’t want to have to uninstall it again!! Any ideas??
TO EVERONE!!!!!
The script specifically says that it deletes the DWORD installed and it creates a REG_SZ (String Value) called the same name and the value data as 1
i learned it the hard way as kal did (#114+115) with another tool called “Offline NT Password & Registry Editor”
this is based on linux and command based
so most people wont try it this way (scared of no GUI….i was one of them….lol)
this worked after reloading windows….
SO TO ANYONE THAT HEARS TO CHANGE THE DWORD VALUE DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM!!!!
Does anybody know where to download this ISO? Ive got XP Pro installed on my new computer and I’m just looking for the converter. Thanks
How do I download Windows XP MCE 2005 this file??
Dose any body no where i can get the torrent from all the links dont seen to work??
Hey i have a windows xp upgrade to mce cd i made i was was able to follow all the steps but when i had to install rollup2 it said that it could only be done on windows xp media center 2005…..i alleady did the windows update thing and it still wont start…how can i install roll up 2…plz help…plz!!!
Ok uh guy above me i am getting the same problem. You probably made the same mistake as i did wich was not burning the ISO to a cd. I’m guessing you must do this do delete that registry key and allow it to make any changes to your system that can not be done while window$ xp is being ran. So your best bet is to burn the ISO to a cd, and then reboot the computer from the cd and allow it to make the changes to your system. I won’t be able to do this because i have no CD burner
This worked for me with XP Home. Rollup2 initially said that it wasn’t media centre 2005 edition but I did the windows updates, restarted, some more updates. Ran the Rollup2 setup from the Rollup2\Update folder and it installed fine.
Outstanding, thank you all
ok for the pple who couldnt get the roll2. put the cd in and reboot. put “y” both times in the dos mode w/e you guys call it. also i remember media**** missing….you just have to search the file yourself in that cd…
I just did the installation process.. Spent almost half a day trying to get it to work. I kept getting the error about “not being able to upgrade without using Media Center Edition.”
Finally I tried using BartPE to change the registry key manually, but no dice! I copied the autorun1.exe to my c: drive and used BartPE to boot my computer, used the file explorer and ran the file. Restarted my computer and ran Rollup 2! My video drivers are not compatible, but I will find newer ones that are..
How I installed it:
1. Install XP Pro VLK
2. Perform steps
[...] is coming from someone that HATES VISTA!! Keep in mind my version of MCE2005 was acquired using the MCE Converter Even though I only have 1gb of ram it still performs very well. When I finally get enough money [...]
Does anyone know if this tool works with Tablet edition aswell? After all, it’s included in the CD2.
Does this work with XP Pro SP3?
I know this is rather old, but better late than never. Assuming you were able to manually install Update Rollup 2 & you have tried all comments left in the thread but, still seem to be stuck, the only scenarios I see that haven’t been covered are..
A) If your using XboxMCE05Lite-enu.exe, you will need the hotfix KB895961 installed.. otherwise the setup will ask you to uninstall & reinstall, repeat, repeat.
B) Better yet, avoid step A & install XboxMCEFULL-ENU.exe (Google for it)
C) If you get this far & receive & error shortly after connecting, create a user group called “MCRD Users” & then reattempt the XBOXMCE setup, that should do it.
Good luck!
Yeh I know some people have said only xp pro and not home but I thought I would try as some people seemed to have success.
Everything installed correctly.
BUT I run into dramas with the “creating user” in the final steps of completing connection with the xbox 360. Xbox finds the pc and gives the code but as others have said, can’t quite complete the xbox 360 setup.
Anyone managed to fix this issue with xp home upgrade? If not, looks like I will have to find other ways to get media center. Be a bummer as it seems so close.
I have a genuine xp pro key on the bottom of my 2nd laptop which has never been used but I don’t have the xp pro disc and tried to get a disc from somewhere else but it must have been a different version as it said invalid key.
How can I install MCE apps? It keeps on showing that the app can only run on Media Center OS, or something like that.
This is silly, but is there a way to uninstall MCE?
See post # 99 by Karin, that is the way to go. Tried all other solutions/suggestions but only that one worked. Just download a copy of winrar if you don’t have it. Also, one correction, it’s actually an “update.exe” not a “setup.exe” that you run in the final step. Other than that it worked like a charm.
This works so well, what a super idea! Just make sure to boot from the CD as step one, and boot after each step. I used on VLK corp XP – worked no problems, all settings and other programs are intact.
Vista MC has few issues (like being unable to play via the digital and analog audio output at the same time) – this require so much less PC power – and runs on your old XP without a problem. Great work

Press any key
4. Boot from CD again so that "Bart PE" loads up
5. Click on minimised window

RUN STEP 1
reboot comp yourself once complete
Open CD and click on "CD_START.exe"
RUN STEP 2
reboot comp yourself once complete

SHOULD ALL WORK FINE!
I couldn't boot from start up although I can run CD_START.exe. Is there any way I can add the registry entries manually?
Thanks who ever made this! It's BRILLIANT!!!!!!! sorry about my last post, winzip made it look like a zip or rar file so I thought there was no iso. I then restored to a point before I started and it had the "Hide extensions for known file types" disable. I straight away saw the iso and sung praises of cheer and embaressment!
I CAN CONFIRM THAT THE MEDIA CENTER VERSION IS 2005!!!!!!:)
BUT THE OS VERSION SAYS 2002!!!!!!:(
Come across my next hurdle, update rollup 2. I'll find a way
YES YES YES!!!!!!!!! UPDATE 2 IS FINALLY INSTALLING, NO ERRORS!!!!!!!!!!
Now lets see if the xbox 360 will work properly???
thannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnks
