Windows XP SP3 RTM Is Here – Well, not quite

Windows XP Service Pack 3 is here, according to Microsoft. The wait for the third and final service pack for Windows XP is now over, reveal resources made available by the Redmond company. And the fact of the matter is that not only is Windows XP SP3 here, but it has been here for quite some time. For no less than a couple of days. While there is absolutely no official word on the matter from Microsoft, the company’s official Support Lifecycle website offering information on its various products has managed to leak the small bit of info pointing to the delivery deadline of XP SP3. Nothing more and nothing less than the general availability date.

Even though there is no official sign from Microsoft related to the deadline when the service pack is planned to be released to manufacturing, this Microsoft Support Lifecycle web page claims that the RTM of XP SP3 has already occurred (courtesy of Neowin). Additionally, the General Availability Date of XP SP3 RTM is March 31, 2008. Now, the truth is that XP SP3 is not available. But not available yet! This does not mean that the Redmond company has not indeed RTM’d the service pack and that it was preparing to make it available as of March 31.

On April 1, 2008, Microsoft has re-released the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Overview. The last time the Redmond company published a fresh copy of the overview documentation for the service pack it also delivered XP SP3 RC2 Refresh build 5508. Now, from the signals that I’m getting the wait for the gold bits of XP SP3 is getting shorter and shorter…

What is the point of the secrecy? Surely it would benefit microsoft customers to know when upgrade is available. Why screw people around so much?

What’s with this? copy-paste from the other site? (well, you left out one paragraph). You could have done something better with this “news”, could have talked some about the fact that it’s not out yet, talked about the article, put in some of your own words and thoughts on the subject, found some more info on the case. Just copy and paste isn’t enough, just makes the tech-news section look terrible.

The March 31st date you saw for Windows XP SP3 RTM on Microsoft.com is incorrect. This information was published due to a site publisher error, and Microsoft is currently working to update the site. The final version of Windows XP SP3 is still on target to be released the first half of calendar year 2008.

SP3 RC2 Refresh is still the latest version available on the net.

I just grabbed the XP corporate with SP3 you posted a few months back.
Works fine, There is also an updated WGA crack available to.
Not sure what build it is.
I think there was 1 security update to get, Compared to SP2’s 80 or so updates.
Install it all the time now.

    @ MorbidGod

pre-historic XP? Oh I get it, you’re one of those people who got suckered into buying Vista so early hahaha. Guess you can call yourself a MicroSoft beta tester now. I’d take the stable XP against the bloated unstable Vista anyday.

Vista is just there so that users can test it for Microsoft which in turn would help MS improve Windows 7 (successor to Vista) in 2010. Hehehe

Microsoft hype..trying to make people who KNOW Vista is just another unwarranted corporate push to sell what they should have made open source years ago feel like Microsoft cares..which they don’t..the next phase in gaming should be REAL virtual reality games at REAL people’s budgets..not some overly hyped games such as Crysis on DX10 that make the rich kids run to Daddy to buy them a newer video card..really. come on, MS assumes a lot here! Other than that .. can anyone actually justify the need for Vista other than to pad the CEO’s pocket?

@ 38 vista is much better than xp, initially it looks nice and youll get pissed at UAC after a few hours/days of use youll find it easier than xp, and alot nicer.

its a far better experiance than xp, but make sure you get sp1, it speeds things up a bit.

thought id add, vista is the first microsoft operating system i have actually bought in my life, 95 onwards have all been pirate. and to be fair its worth the £100 for OEM ultimate.

    Guys does SP3 32bit version support’s more than 3GB of RAM ?!

  41. bert
    April 4th, 2008 | 22:17

xp, and vista x86 support up to 4 gig, while they will only show 3 gig they will in fact use up to 4 gig, when required, eg in games etc.
if you have only 3gig and your pc refuses to show that you have 3 gig, only 2, you need to put a /3gig switch in the win.ini, google it, youll find something.
