Windows Vista brute-force attack appears to be a hoax!

Yesterday word came out that the Windows Vista validation check was easily fooled by a simple bruteforce-attack. Today it turns out that this was not true. Many were surprised that such an old method was able to do the job, when Microsoft spend many years developing a fool-proof security system for Windows Vista. Many forums were also confused as to whether this was possible, since the keygen made up random keys and even included characters that were not even used in valid Vista keys. Despite of this hoax, just yesterday news was published about a way to hack Vista by flashing your BIOS. This appears to be valid up ’till now. There was also an alternative way to do this by using a bootable CD or a USB-stick. Vista has become the #1 target for many hackers, probably because of claims from Microsoft saying that Vista’s security was waterproof. Next time Microsoft will probably instruct their PR personnel to keep their mouths shut about Vienna’s security…

Nothing wrong with posting a correction. Busting up MS’s image is always fun to read about, as well as links to legit work-arounds to their claims of bulletproof architecture.

Whining about what you choose to read or not read on a free site you choose to go to or not go to? pretty pathetic. Makes me wonder if you had to open up calc in order to thwart the spam protection…

Its not a Hoax, I received 2 keys from it, both of which I have activated my copy of Vista Ultimate with.

Although it is a terrible Brute Force attack with no database to even start with.. it works just not in any level of normality.

Guys, I just cant believe how ppl wont spend the $100 for Vista and bother with keygens and cracks and all that BS!

you want to get Vista for free, then steal it or you must wait until A REAL REAL crack is found; otherwise, go buy it!!!!!!

well its technically is possible…. just not logical, due to how many combinations there is. Its like trying to brute force hack a 128bit lock…. so many combinations.

There is simple ways to fix it anyways, add “retry” timers in between each activation attempt. So it turns the process of brute force from long into LONGER….

If you have like 5 computers in ya house, there is a simple trick to activate them all using 1 “real” copy of Vista. Which doesn’t require ANY Keygens or hacks or what not.

    This is how:
    1. Install Vista on 1st computer with that key
    2. Activate vista on that 1st computer
    3. Install vista on 2nd computer with the same key in step 1.
    4. Attempt to activate Vista, it will say “this copy in use”, choose to activate it alternate ways, and choose Phone activation.
    5. Call up Microsoft, and tell them “i have recently upgraded my computer due to my old hardware not good enough to run vista, however i cannot activate it again”
    6. They give you a new activation number to type in.
    7. Repeat this phone microsoft for how many computers you have.

Can also do it to ya friends if ya want. lol. Can share 1 copy with all ya friends. and their friends, and their friends again….. (of course dont make a whole network of people using your key >.> microsoft will just blacklist it >.. people dont change computers 150 times)

I don’t think it’s a hoax, it will work given enough time. It just generates random characters until a key is accepted without using any clever algorithms. If someone could decode Microsoft’s key structure then it would be possible to make a keygen of the type we’ve all seen before for other apps.

I was reading last night that this was a hoax on Digg, where I think the ‘hoax!’ cry originated from. But that started out just because some guy had ran it for 8 hours with no results. Hell, the original post said this could take DAYS…

It’s true that brute forcing a 128-bit encrytion key is nigh on impossible to do in a reasonable amount of time, but in this case there are millions/billions of correct keys you could generate rather than just one. Each activation code will have it’s specific pattern and checksum digits, it shouldn’t take too long to nail one of those.

I’m curious to see how this will work out and whether Microsoft will keep a database of all released keys and blacklist any genuine ones that happen to be ’stolen’ by a brute force attack.

and even microsoft austria CONFIRMED that on the phone so i expect this to be true ..

@psrst143: You idiot! Look at the fucking movie, he’s not even using Vista. Look at the start orb, it’s not a full circle, look at the windows. That’s just a theme for XP. That video is a hoax, and so is the brute forcing.
