Windows Mobile 6.1 will be released on April Fools
Pocket-lint has learnt from sources close to the matter that Microsoft will announce the much-rumoured refresh to its mobile phone operating system, Windows Mobile, on 1 April 2008. An improvement over Windows Mobile 6 released in February 2007 the new version, unsurprisingly named 6.1, will be a stop-gap measure to keep both consumers and industry happy until the launch of Windows Mobile 7.
Leaked screenshots of 6.1 have already done the rounds in the blogosphere, and show the system has been simplified with the screens displaying less mess than the Vista-inspired version 6. A new look with new fonts, new homescreen and new features such as a task manager and copying and pasting in Internet Explorer all bode well for users of Microsoft’s OS for handhelds.

Does anyone know if this will be an available upgrade for WM5, or if it’s going to be a separate OS? I have a device with WM5, so will I be able to upgrade to 6.1 by just plugging in my phone and searching for an update?
maybe u should get 6 first and then upgrade.

Someone asked which phones support this : smartphones, this is an operating system, it’s not java .. so you must have a smartphone to be able to install it.
As for upgrading WM5, this could be available as a upgrade for WM6 (but i kind of doubt it will be that simple) or a nice separate OS install (which i like the most).
If you are looking for WM6 to upgrade from WM5 try out http://www.modaco.com/ (good forum about smartphones and Windows Mobile with nice guides).

hmmm if not: Damn you MS for not updating your Mobile OSes, but releasing a “new” version, wich v6 users cant get.
Vantage point seen it last week at the cnema, its only 23 minutes long but from 5-6 different views, story line was good but the concept was shyt, they tried to make it like deja vu type!!!
I have an HTC Wizard (8125). I’ve seen the Vanilla WM6, but I wasn’t too sure about it. Does anyone have any input on it? Is there a better version available? Thanks for any help!

If it happened that you’ve and HTC device (MDA, XDA, ..etc), the best place to get updates will be http://www.xda-developers.com, go to the forum section, choose your mobile and then go to the Windows mobile 6, you’ll find there the latest stable cooked roms for your HTC.

I’ve been using 6.1 on my TyTN II/P4550/Vario III/Kaiser whatever you want to call it, for 2 months now. Pretty solid OS with lots of application supported.
It’s not fun to tell us it’s an April Fool’s Day joke on the title. It takes all the fun out of it.
