Wii, Xbox 360 leave the PS3 behind

Microsoft Nintendo hardware sales benefitted once more from successful game titles in September. The best selling title for the month was Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (610,000 units), which helped lift Xbox 360 sales by more than 75% from 195,200 in August to 347,200 units in September, according to NPD. The Wii climbed from a weak 453,000 units in August to 687,000 units on strong sales of its Wii Fit game and accessory, which sold 518,000 times during the month.

Slowly but surely, Sony may be concerned about its PS3. In comparison to its rivals, sales have been weakening over the past three months. In September, the PS3 saw the smallest sales increase, from 185,400 units in August to 232,400 in September. The most successful game for the PS3 came in at the #5 spot: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed sold 325,000 units. The PS3 had only one top 10 game in September, while the Xbox 360 had five and the Wii had four.

Let’s look at the current market shares in the game console market:

Nintendo has solidified its market share of more than 50% and stood at 54.2% in September. Microsoft increased its share to 27.4%, while Sony dropped to 18.3%.

In September 2007, the Xbox 360 led the market with 46.0% share, followed by the Wii with 43.6% and the PS3 with 10.4%.

Sony has nothing to worry about, because of the solid exclusive upcoming lineup Little Big Planet, SOCOM: Confrontation, Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 are here to save the day! Don;t forget PSN Network too!

Just because killzone 2 has somewhat decent graphics doesn’t mean the gameplay will be there, the first killzone was crap what makes people think this one will be any better.

I cant believe Wii is doing so well. China with over 1.3 billion people and Japan 127.7 million …and they all support their stinky console, so I dont think xbox360 or PS3 will ever catch up even if their console were for free. I guess Wii must be an asian thing… because I dont see what people see in that console with graphics from the 20th century.

    October 18th, 2008 | 03:29

why the graphics so important?? is the game play that why wii
is selling.ps3 better graphics yet not selling to well and
    $400 that another reason.

The Wii is still selling well because Nintendo dominates the market in Asia and because its still hard to get, thus people still feel special when they can find one, its like a treasure hunt. The Wii is the worst system of the 3, the amount of garbage games released on it are ming boggling but that Asian market saves them time and time again. Gamecube had the same problem with the library of avaiable games and guess what? The Wii is having that same problem.

PS3 is the best of all, I don’t care what anyone says. I have all 3 (and about 10 other RIP’s) counsels so please, no fan boy stuff… thnX. Funny how half the peeps that bash the PS3 are just mad because they can’t afford it… Some day they’ll make a Tonka Toy Edition for ya… Just like the $199 360 ;)

    @8 wut

You are right, the PlayStation 1 & PlayStation 2 are successful because of piracy, some goes for the Wii, XBox & XBox 360. Downloaded and pirated games are the most important reasons why gamers buy a console in the first.

I am very very cheap because the best things in life are free.
(To those who trumpet buying originals; _|_ to all you hypocrites) :)

The truth is the economy. Wii is the cheapest new system out there so people are going for the cheapest prices system. Xbox was first in the “next-gen” game and they are dedicated to just GAMES. IMO, both Wii & 360 are “kids” systems. Strictly for gaming… Now the Ps3 is the most expensive out of the bunch. You gotta pay for quality. Like #4 said, Honda’s sell more than Porsches. Ps3 plays games to their optimal performance (excluding PC games of course) and at the same time the Ps3 has a another advantage that in today’s economy is a little harder to sell. A NEW VIDEO FORMAT, BLU-RAY. Like DVDs took over VHS, Blu-ray will eventually take over DVDs. Oh and what about that TOP-SECRET Ps3 game only a dozen people have got to see and signed a confidentiality form? I have faith in Sony.

it’s funny how piracy fuels the gaming industry…at least sony learnt this from the ps3…maybe, they should make their ps4 (if any) easier to crack to gain more market share…anyways, ps3 is still hands down the best out of the 3 consoles…

PS3 has blue-ray, the others don’t, that fact alone make PS3 the clear winner. I can’t understand why anyone at all would buy an xbox now since it doesn’t have that which is the most important feature there is.

My brother only bought a PS3 for its blu-ray built in player. Which imo is one of the only reasons its favored over the xbox 360 / elite versions. I personally have an xbox360, only problem with the 360 so far is they tend to break a lot. I think my brother has had the red ring of death on 3 different consoles now. Lucky for me I’m a casual user and do not use it often, most of the time I only ever use the xbox360 as a middle man to stream my HD files through an external HDD to my plasma.

I think a key point everyone forgets is that even though the Wii is the cheapest console Nintendo STILL make an actual profit on the hardware. The 360 and PS3 all sell for a loss as did the consoles before them (except PS1).

When you can actually make money on the hardware the games wont seem such a priority all this talk of market share is nonsense after all Sony had the lions share of the market since PS1 days and yet 14 years later and there gaming division is in the RED and is constantly being bailed out by the rest of Sony Corp.

Microsoft are doing the same with the 360 with the eventual hope that it will gain the market share and hopefully do a better job of actually turning an overall long term profit, something Sony am afraid have royally screwed up.

Not getting into a console war here as hav’nt brought one since the Neo Geo :P but am all for a company making games and being in the gaming industry as they (Nintendo) have an over 200 year history of doing this and actually want to innovate and not just throw there money at giving us the best graphics like it is a bodybuilding contest.

Say what you will they have games that offer a cross section of consumers a hell of alot of fun something Microsoft and Sony WILL emulate in there next consoles and not gear that at any particular demographic.

The current war as it stands is already over.

    @19

Believe it or not - most people don’t buy a video game system for it’s ability to play DVDs or BlueRay DVDs!! I bought mine to play games, the fact that it doubles as a DVD player works well for me, but it’s definitely not the reason why I bought it.

I don’t know a single person that has a stand alone BlueRay DVD player - however, if you’re looking for that you might as well just buy a PS3.

In my opinion, the most important features for a video game system are the selection of games and the online features - this will differ from person to person, but I hardly doubt BlueRay is Sony’s biggest selling point.

i agree with @ 13 kepp it simple and @15 must

i guess also the economy in Asian market is the cause wii and xbox360 gain an advantage in this console war. wii is the cheapest and affordable console of them 3 and also family oriented and 1 pirated dvd only cost 3 or 5 dollar only.same also with xbox360 but more game cater for adult gamer.
the ps3 format have disadvantage with its bluray bcoz too expensive for many asian household with their average salary that almost the same as ps3 tag price + unpirated bluray.
the ps3 is like Ferrari , excellent quality but how many ppl can afford it? Just my 2 cent.

I never understood why people with computers buy consoles. I download all the games for free. Sure you can mod. But even still, you shell out a few hundred for your console. And now many people pay a monthly subscription fee above their internet connection fee. These are dollars that could be spent on booze, weed, coke, hookers. All those things go well with PC games.

Sony only have to drop the price by $100-$150 after Christmas and the 360 won’t have a leg to stand on. Also the PS3 game in to the next gen with a 10yr plan so its just warming up. I feel that M$ will drop the 360 within 2yrs.

Screw all you Wii haters. Can’t go wrong with a number of games on the console which are bloody damn fun. Tenchu 4 which is coming soon looks to be very interesting.

Sure there are some bizarre games coming like Wii Music plus WiiFit which is already out. But who the frak cares. It’s all fun an’ games at the end of the day. Super Mario Galaxy, Mario Kart and Metroid Prime Corruption still kicks ass to this day.

Putting that aside I still love my PS3 and love the DivX update plus connecting your iPod etc.

At the end of the day graphics still ain’t everything…

    @27:

I highly doubt that a console would be next-gen for 10 years. The ps2 has been out for what, 7/8 years? And it is outdated. Building for the future is never a good thing, and that is what would cause businesses to fail. Catering for current consumer requirements, is what businesses should look at.

Also; another factor that would possibly play a role in this market would be the whole financial crisis in the US. Stock market is volatile, US interest rates are wayy too volatile to actually spend too much on a gaming console via credit card(for parents anyway, who wouldn’t have $700 on hand).

    that’s my 2c.

  30. cassidy
    October 18th, 2008 | 08:35

@24 gaming computer = ferrari, not ps3, not even close.

On that note, nintendo is the clear winner, even if all these post’s don’t agree. You think nintendo cares if alot of their market is from asia? Ha! Why would they? It IS the cheapest console, and they actually make profit from each console they sell unlike the other (idk if sony and microsoft are still losing money with each console, but I know they did for quite a while). Bottom line, this graph is to show who is selling more, not saying which one is better.

Since when was the Wii the cheapest console, Xbox 60GB and Wii both retail for around the same price in the UK, and in Japan the 360 is even cheaper, then coming down to $250 in the US soon.

The Xbox is cheaper than the Wii now, you can get the version without the HDD for £100.
I have bothe the 360 and PS3 and to me there is absolutely no difference in how they preform, but I prefer the 360 because the controller is better.

    October 18th, 2008 | 11:42

Look lets clear a few things up, the Wii cannot be classed in the same group as the 360 and the PS3 for 2 reasons. Firstly it’s not a true hi-def games console (anything that can’t acheive at least 720p is not really hi-def)and secondly it’s more of a family entertainment console which has been marketed and aimed at a complely different audience.

Now all you PS3 lovers out there shouting about your ‘exclusives’which will save Sony are so deluded, do you not read the gaming press!! PS have now lost virtually all of them due to the software companies loosing millions and finding it nigh on impossible to program the code for the PS3 platform. Tekken is now going 360 and there is talk of even MGS moving to MSoft now someone else has taken over. Soon is all that will be left is Gran Tourismo and that hasn’t even been made yet if you look in the news hard enough.

Blu ray is an over priced format that will never take off as the media is too expensive to produce and unreliable, HD DVD should have triumphed but Sony buttered the right people up again and came through. The writing is on the wall for Sony games division and there is no way Sony corp will finance the development of a new console until they have clawed back some of the massive losses from this one. On that note MS are already planning the next console which of course will drum the current PS because it will offer blu ray as well as a vast system enhancement.

Get with the program people, the PS3 will be dead in 2 years and you’ll all be left with unsupported consoles thinking if only i had listened.

I totally agree with the piracy teory “no piracy no sale”, games are very expensive, you buy, play and you sutck with them 60$ to the trash. PS3 is a superior product but not “hackabe”, you shod by one if you whish to view Blue Ray movies, listening to music, go to the Internet and of course play some games in the comfort of your living room. Solution to PS3 poor sale, simple SONY must “reduce” the protection system.

  38. Boomstick
    October 18th, 2008 | 12:58

The xbox360 is by far the bvest consoel of the current genration, it has the best games and best versions of the same multi platform games. There are people on here who seem to think the ps3 is better in fact it is worse spec wise than a ps3 as it only has 256mbram avaialbale to the gpu. It is renound for being hard too develop games for aswell.

The Xbox 360 works seamlessly with a media centre pc or a pc with windows media player 11 installed to give you HD video steramed from your PC, it plays Xvids Divx X264 AAC DVDs Mini Blu ray rips. Why anybody would want to purcahse sony’s overpriced budget blu ray player is beyond me. PS3 = epic fail sony know this so are selling it now as a glorified bluray player that will play some games just not as good as the 360.

If you want a proper console get an xbox 360 and save yourself the dissapointment that I had with the ps3. The games are crap and bluray is expensive. get a 360 and stream HD movies there free!

Man I love to read the comments by the “loyal” Sony fans.

-Game development on the PS3 takes twice as long.
-Third party games play best on the Xbox 360.
-Games get delayed a lot on the PS3.
-You have to install pretty much every game because Blu-Ray is slow as sh1t.
-Every system update some people get their PS3 bricked (depending on the model).
-You have to pay for most system repairs.
-The games library for the PS3 is small compared to the Xbox 360’s.
-Sony cut off backwards compatibility to save money.

& im sure there is more.

Why buy a PS3 and have to wait a year or two for a few good games? People buy the Xbox 360 to play games… now!
If I wanted Blu-Ray I would wait a year or two and get a cheap Blu-Ray player/burner for the PC.

If Microsoft want a game that’s on the PS3 they just have to flash enough money at it (Tekken 6/FF13 anyone?). It’s funny how Sony fans still have hope… they got a whole list of things they say - “just wait another year”, “have hope”, “i got faith in Sony” etc.

I mean seriosuly Sony fans, can you look at a multiplatform game image without being told what console its on and spot the difference, because I sure can’t. You paid that extra $200 for a slow as sh1t Blu-Ray player that requires you to install games.

I hate to break it to you but 2007 wasnt the PS3’s year, 2008 isnt the PS3’s year and 2009 wont be the PS3’s year… and if you believe otherwise your blind, because can you mention any other AAA games other than MAG or GOW2 for 2009?

The Xbox 360 is about the games and as shown on here, we got a sh1t load of em.

The 360 has a lot of games because they produce a lot of fillers, that never get played, to say they have more games. Its been their strategy from the get go.

The fact is, anyone who wants the best all around platform, goes with the PS3. Only 1.7% of households in the US own a blu ray player, and the huge majority of those are PS3’s. Only around 25% of households have HDTV’s, but as that number increases, so will PS3 sales. When the digital switch happens, and the economy gets back on track, sales will increase substantially.

I shopped both consoles hard for almost two years. For the longest time I thought I would go with the 360 since everyone I know who games has a online account with them. When it came down to it though, when I finally sat down and crunched the numbers, the PS3 was a no brainer. Ive never looked back. I love the thing.

Blu-Ray is already obsolete it’s all about digital downloads. Netflix to stream HD to your TV who needs to spend another 400 bucks on a Blu-Ray player. Majority of the households in the U.S own a computer anyways.
