Why are there lowercase letters in rls names?

I receive tons of mails every single day, most of them asking for link exchange, some kind of invitation or just help. I still like to answer every single mail, although I could probably spend my time doing something little more useful, but I really like the community around NewTorrents and RLSLOG and believe this helps to make the users more loyal and satisfied. There are some clever, original or just funny mails from time to time and this one which arrived to my mailbox few moments ago is exactly such a case:

Hi RlsLog Team!

First, you do a great stuff and I’m happy to see releases news each days. So I’m writing to ask you something: Why are there only lowercase “i” letters in releases’ tags dirname?

For example:
Fiend.Without.A.Face.1958.Criterion.iNTERNAL.DVDRip.XviD-iLS
Entourage.S03E14.FRENCH.DVDRiP.XViD-PEPiTO
Til.Doeden.Os.Skiller.2007.DANiSH.TELESYNC.XViD-NordiskFilm
Carlitos.Way.1993.PAL.MULTi.DVD9-VFC

You see, iNTERNAL, DVDRiP, XViD, DANiSH, MULTi, and so on…

Well, the answer is more funny than the whole question: it just looks better. :)

I and l can be easily confused in some fonts…

    that`s so sweet!

also iNDEPENDENT (iND) uses the l33t style

Just to not agree with this reason…

The way releases are named is called: LEETSPEAK
Leet (or 1337, l33t) is a custom language. Leet is derived from the word Elite.

The most common leetspeak letter replacement in the scene is the ‘I’. The uppercase ‘I’ letter is practically always replaced by the lowercase ‘i’. The original reason for this was that the uppercase I and the lowercase l were so similar that it was very hard or not possible to see which one it was. Nowadays it’s still being replaced, for the traditional reason and because it looks cool (so Martin is right here for a part). Examples: iNTERNAL (releasetag), ADDiCTiON (releasegroup).

thanks for broadening the explanation Nomad!

But why was “i” the only letter that remained changed out of tradition and not the rest of them letters?

Lowercasing also used to apply to the first letter of uppercased words, eg. fAiRLiGHT, hOODLUM, etc.

But it varies a lot now.. back in the eighties. These days you damn kids dont know you was born! init.

As far as i know groups never used leetspeak, it was just some hacked up language by video game kids. But you are right on the lowercase/uppercase usage and yeah it does look cooler.

actually the first one who replied (“Nobody”) is right.

it has to do with the letter “i” & “l” being so simular.
(especially in the days we all used bitmap fonts.. like the infamous topaz 8 on the amiga)

i could go on about file_id.diz and the arrival of ibm computers (different fonts/chars) but that would bore the kiddies.

Many years ago when I was introduced to the scene-release naming-convention I thought I looked pretty bad. However I soon got used to it and for years now I have grown to like it. :)

Yup. Uppercase of i (I) and lowercase of L (l) looks similar in certain fonts.

    that’s why I never emailed you Martin :P :P:P

XviD is always with small “v”, it’s the official name of the codec, not a found release tag. This is the case with DivX too.

    October 10th, 2007 | 13:35

Sorry, I don’t buy the whole “i looks so much like l” angle. If words like “iNTERNAL” and “MULTi” have uppercase L’s, why does the i have to be lowercase, if the L is uppercase?

  36. Dahn
    October 10th, 2007 | 19:40

I’m going with “ummm” on this one, very good point.

  37. damo
    October 11th, 2007 | 16:52

@ummm It makes it more explicit, if they used upercase i you would not know for sure if its lowercase L (for some reason) or upercase i. There is no mistaking lowercase i.

  38. ummm
    October 17th, 2007 | 14:31

    @damo
Or you could just use all upper case like INTERNAL and MULTI. I don’t see how there is any mistaking that?

  39. Jeave
    October 27th, 2007 | 06:24

And Apple adopted the concept for their range of “i”-products. iTunes, iPod, iMac etc. Obviously to appeal to the young generation. I bet there’s been several studies related to it.
