Who Reads Ulysses by Julie Sloan Brannon-P2P
There is always something slightly hypocritical about a scholarly book purporting to champion the common reader. In a work that is marketed mainly to university libraries and other scholars, with scant likelihood of finding its way to the bookshelves at Borders, discussing the common reader feels more than a little like gossiping about people when they’re not in the room—and more particularly, people we barely know. But somehow, such a metaphor seems highly appropriate when discussing the Joyce Wars: at their heart, the controversies outlined in this study are, simply, gossip. During the Kidd-Gabler controversy, the anticipation over what Kidd would say or do next overshadowed any of the real issues being “discussed.”
