WhereIsIt v3.90-YAG

WhereIsIt is well know organizing & cataloging software. If you have large collection of CDs/DVDs this one might become handy.

Description:

WhereIsIt is an application written for Windows operating systems, and designed to help you maintain and organize a catalog of your computer media collection, including CD-ROMs, audio CDs, diskettes, removable drives, hard drives, network drives, DVDs, or any other present or future storage media Windows can access as a drive.
The primary goal for WhereIsIt is to provide access to the contents of cataloged disks, even when they are not available on the system, or even not your own. You can browse their contents, search for items you need, use imported descriptions and thumbnails, and organize data using categories, flags etc.

WhereIsIt can be used to handle any kind of data, including downloaded programs, magazine CD-ROMs, music collections like MP3s or audio CDs, graphics collections, document backups, etc. WhereIsIt can handle lots of them, too, a couple hundreds or thousands disks in a catalog is nothing unusual, yet catalogs remain reasonably small, single-filed and easy to transfer or send to other users. You can also create more than one catalog, and at any time open and work with as many catalogs at once as needed.

WhereIsIt is easy to use for both beginners and advanced users. It features a familiar and well thought-out, Explorer-like user interface, combined with strong searching and reporting capabilities, multi-language support, automated description and thumbnails importing through extendable plugins from more than 70 different sources, and much more.

How does this software compare to the other dvd cataloguers?
I recently formatted my computer and lost my catalogue of 1000s of dvds. I want to start over, but i want the best software for it. Thanks.

and trust me you found it! But don’t forget to block the blacklisting of a key, else it will change every disc name (and files in it) into name “warez”! Happened to me once…

Best disk collection organizer, but overpriced (lol).

    New in 3.90 unicode support.

DiskExplorer looks promising, but still lack of unicode and plugins (and no search dialog screenshot at site - I still sure it lacks of search options too). Is DE still fast with 1000+ disks database?

What’s with the profusion of cataloging software?

I mean what wrong with Windows’ F3 + [type name of file here]?

Or maybe *gasp* making logical folders to put things in?

WhereIsIt.v3.90-YAG, Working! But downloading the setup file from http://www.whereisit-soft.com/, using Beyond Compare to compare inside YAG’s “Setup.exe”, Two files don’t match! If using setup file from the author’s site+YAG’s License.key, it will be unregistered!
    Why?
Maybe the YAG release is precracked? Or all paid users using other downing link? Sorry, my poor English.

    December 13th, 2007 | 12:55

after a license key is out in the wild the author silently blacklists it. the only way to have a good install is to use the initial exe and a new unreleased license key…

  19. YoKo
    December 13th, 2007 | 16:59

You can avoid blacklisting by entering the site into windows HOST file… 127.0.0.1

  20. Harbinger
    December 13th, 2007 | 18:01

Isnt that site always in the host file? Mine was..

  21. @Harbinger
    December 13th, 2007 | 22:00

Yes, 127.0.0.1 is already in the host file.

But the Idea is to put every whereisit.com etc. website into the host file and link these names to localhost (127.0.0.1).

You add lines like the following to the hosts file
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (path in winxp):

    127.0.0.1 whereisit-soft.com
    127.0.0.1 http://www.whereisit-soft.com
    127.0.0.1 etc.

each domainname / variation on its own line.

When entering a URL in a web browser, then Windows (basically any OS) does *first* look into the ‘hosts’ file if a IP address has been assigned to that URL. Only then, if that URL does not show up in the hosts file, the browser asks a DNS server on the internet for the corresponding IP-address.

  30. idea
    January 14th, 2008 | 08:55

Has anyone tried protecting the catalogs to their own user upon creation? Maybe that will prevent if from protecting to a different user? I’ve tried it and so far it works…

  31. SyntaxError
    January 16th, 2008 | 13:19

@28, it doesn’t call home like I originally thought.

@30, locking your own database does nothing to prevent the app from locking you out. I’ve been using version 3.84.715 without trouble until now. I cataloged just over 900gigs of stuff, then I started doing my downloaded games, most of which have the word “warez” in the volume labels, and this is when the app started locking me out and unregistering itself again, even though I locked the database myself. At first I thought it was the Generic Text plugin I was using to import the .nfo files into the descriptions, so I removed that plugin and it still locked me out. I can only assume that the app recognizes either the word “warez”, the rar files themselves, or maybe even the .nfo files, or a combination of those.

We can only hope someone can crack this beast. I thought about trying but my knowledge of assembly is very limited.

  32. Warez User
    January 19th, 2008 | 20:28

My catalogs are of my photos, and they still get locked. I don’t think it is the word “warez” that is causing this. I marked the .key files as read only, but it doesn’t help. So far my best solution is to keep a backup of the catalog when they last worked (luckily I found a version in one of my backups).

  33. kiy
    January 20th, 2008 | 23:11

the same. my catalogs locked by ‘warez user’ and I’ve tried adding whereisit-soft.com to host file and no help.

i blocking whereisit.exe in vista’s advance firewall to access internet and rename my catalog.bak to catalog.cft, its works! now i just added 5 more disc and found no problem more.

Here’s a nice trick to fix protected catalogs:
install whereisit 3.24 or older, load the protected catalog, create a new catalog and then from Catalog Manager copy all disk images to newly created catalog. You’ll end with all your disk images in new catalog which is not protected.

It is useful to forbid the programme to rename “License.key”.
The file “License.key.fake” causes WAREZ USER problem in a cracked version.
I have tried McAfee to do this, and it works.

Hey guys, today I have encountered the “Warez User” window of Death so I followed the WhereIsIt 3.24 tip and it worked just fine. Now I have blocked all incoming and outgoing WhereIsIt.exe connections through Comodo Firewall and created backups of all my now recovered catalogs. Will keep you posted of the outcome after I switch to 3.90 again and test it.

    O MY GOD!
Im not a hacker, but i have solved the “WhereItIs” anticrack protection.
It is a bit funny, but the catalogs u have created is NOT password protected, just go to proporties of catalog and select the lock icon,DONT tipe enything just confirm it.And that is it, here u can change it to full access or lock it whit your pass.
If this dont work, download “Whereisit [pass fix]” and try the same
I WILL NEVER PAY FOR SOFTWARE, EVER!

I’ve been using this program for a while, and have had the dreaded warez happen a few times. I’ve learnt to do a few things before updating:

    - Make a backup of youre catalogue
    - If you are running an old keygen to make your keys, use 3.24 to add disks, and change your key regularly. Then go back to the latest version (until the prick of an author blocks the trick below)
    - Once you have added a disk, delete the license key and run in unregistered mode.

The last point is a neat little trick that bypasses the limits placed on the trial. Once you have the disk added, you can update the disk (certainly the folders within it), regardless of how big it is.

If you want to catalogue DVD’s that you are writing with your pic/movie collections on them, create a folder and name it the same as the DVD. Copy the files into the folder (I do this before writing it) and update the parent folder. If you need to make a new parent folder, create a folder inside another folder, scan it, then use the move function in WhereIsIt to move it to the top, making a new parent folder.

This author is a real prick, causing PC’s to shut down when he detects a fake key means I’ll never pay him a cent.
