Comments(79)
its a shame, but can we do..
great i hate those shows anyway
lol what’s this about? i read the wiki
South Park continues. haha!
The unit?!!!
F**king strike…
so when half the shows that make it to primetime suck and get cancelled, the studio and producers usually go in the red a few million dollars, depending on the value. Would the writers then have to give back their salaries? If they want “fair”, that would seem “fair”.
Wtf, No more fmaily guy?
I keep reading these updates but when it says 24 episodes ordered for shows like CSI, do you mean that 24 scripts are available for production or just that the network has ordered that many?
Damn greedy writers are ruining the TV season for everyone else.
Jeez, it must be so tough for J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof to get by on their writing earnings from LOST.
They make $.04 per DVD, so on a show like Heroes, that comes out to an extra $40,000 for an episode of the show, on their sales of 1,000,000 for the first season…for doing nothing extra at all.
The script they wrote was already filmed and aired on TV, and they were already paid for that. Incredible.
@andrew
How can South Park continue if they just aired their season finale last night??
Smallville, Supernatural, Heroes, Bionic Biatch are on the list WTH! This is absurd!!
@11
i’m assuming theyre going to be creating next season’s episodes. and it was the last episode was season finale? suuucks. anyhow theres a south park christmas dvd out so grab that it seems new. so far its eh.
Prison Break: On hiatus until January 14.
nooooo not my prison break why????
Anyone know how many episodes of Pushing Daisies they have left?
@monkey
Too many!
jesus christ, couldn’t they be more creative with their signs? i mean they ARE writers?!?!?
@ #17 todd
That is the kind of mentality that the Hollywood studios have to put up with. These writers get paid for their work when they write it, and whether the product does well in front of an audience or not, they keep their pay. So if a movie has a great box office or horrible box office, they still get paid. Same thing with a TV show.
Now this greedy union wants even more! Imagine if any other union tried this same trick anywhere else?? The electricians union could go to their bosses and say “Everytime a light gets turned on, we wanna get paid again!” or the plumbers union could go to their bosses and say “Everytime a toilet gets flushed, we wanna get paid again!”.
@17
ahahahaha i lol’ed
I didn’t realize that my hatred of unions could increase any further.
It now has.
Im in a teachers union, and I want to jump on this bandwagon.
Is there a way I can get paid every time one of my students earns a dollar??
OMG!!!!!! NOT MY HEROES!!! IT WAS JUST GETTING GOOD WITH ADAM AND PETER OWNING IT UP!!!!
AND SMALLVILLE?!?! NOOOOOOOOO
@18 well said, i was thinking the same…
@21, are you Mr. Tyler my 3rd grade teacher? Well you can’t have the $$$ I’ve earned, but thanks for teaching me to write in script.
i dont get it.. ;p
Non of the shows on the list are anything any good so I am happy the shows that don’t suck arent cancelling times. WGA strike is a good thing, some of the wrost shows arent going to be on.. so I am really happy and hope the strike last 3 or 4 years or not more.
Well, we are, after all, a country driven by money. It is completely rational for the writers guild, or most unions really, to try to maximize their income. With the US economy in such disarray, and the cost of living ever on the rise, it seems logical that they are after more money. Face it, strikes happen all the time. Yes $.04 per dvd can add up to a significant sum, but you have to take into account everyone who writes. Most of the writers for talk shows and other week to week shows don’t make that $.04. Even considering shows that have a different writer for every script like heroes. It’s not like the same guy writes a script for every episode. They naturally wouldn’t be entitled to 4 cents. Another complaint that I see as valid is that they make less money than the producers directors and actors. I believe that the pay should be on par. They are above the line. Without what they do we would have nothing. A fact that many actors have proved by walking with the guild. All in all, we should probably be grateful that it hasn’t happened in 30 years. Most of the target demographics weren’t even born yet, or were very young. It’ll be over soon enough and things will be back to normal… until all the below the line people strike.
unions are all communists. If you don’t like what you’re being paid, get another job or start your own company. Get some personal responsibility! No-one’s forcing you to work there.
@ #26 psyclear
This strike is centered on what is called profit participation. That is the percentage of profits that the show makes after the initial airing.
Most of the writers on week-to-week shows will never see these types of profits because, quite frankly, those type of shows dont sell well in reruns. Not many people are looking to buy Season 22 of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno or Season 3 of The Ellen Degeneres Show.
Those writers depend on their primary salary to earn their living, and that salary is not controlled by the WGA at all, that is contracted between the show and its writers.
The WGA needs to agree to get their money up front, and then take their hands out of their bosses pocket.
I find the lack of support for the writers of many of your favorite shows to be disturbing? After all, if you co-wrote a book, and it was published and you made some money, and then it was put onto a CD for sale, and you DIDN’T make any money, you’d be mad too. The lack of compassion for the average writer who DOESN’T make a million a year on writing like the biggest writers is disturbing. I mean, where did out compassion go? Do we let the big corporations tell us what is right and wrong these days like all of you guys have?
Give the writers more money, they deserve it. the studio execs are greedy bunch of people and they just don’t want to give away extra cash ‘coz they want it for themselves. writers deserve as much money as producers and directors, because without them, they don’t even have a story.
What about Chuck?
…but Atlantis keeps on going. Couldn’t say I’m suprised though.
Atlantis is entirely created here in Vancouver. So, no WGA.
The writers are right, they deserve this money.
Didnt realise how many crap shows they are. Lost is the only one I like as South Park is not effected or The Simpsons. Is this about DVD royalties because most people will download them as torrents anyway.
I would recommend watching this youtube vid to get a true idea of the idiocy of the media companies.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzRHlpEmr0w
Also, what this video doesn’t say, is it isn’t just online media that is at issue, it’s DVD media as well.
@34
Typically when something is put onto a new form of media, no matter what position you are in with something published, your contract is renegotiated to include this new media form. This is what was attempted prior to the strike, but the media companies refused to give up any of their new profit generator. So yeah, I think if something is shown, it doesn’t matter if it’s at a movie theater or on TV, the person that wrote that, should get paid. Simple as that.
@everyone on here who thinks the strikers are greedy:
Hahahaha! A bunch of leeching pirates, most of whom don’t live in the US and shouldn’t be watching these programs anyway, complaining about people trying to ensure that their jobs and pay are safe and fair.
And Holo (27) – Unions are all communists – well,du’h! Take your moronic, distopian and McCarthyist view of communism out of here and read up on what communism really is. The USSR was not a communist state. It was a State Capitalism state. Run by the state for the benefit of the state.
Keep the red flag flying!
@JesusChristIt’sALion
“Typically when something is put onto a new form of media, no matter what position you are in with something published, your contract is renegotiated to include this new media form.”
What country do you live in? A contract is just that, a contract. It is NOT renegotiated whenever one party starts making more money than the other party. The writers signed a contract giving them a certain amount of money for their work, and that is what they get.
Now the studios have gone and created a new “home video” market by taking their movies, producing extras, nice packaging, box sets, etc… and marketing these to the public to create some extra income. What the heck did the writers do to create any of this extra income??
Take a DVD like Transformers…Sold 7 million copies on DVD, and at 4 cents a copy, the writers, Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci will get a check for $280,000!! On top of the millions they got for writing it in the first place!
And now they are on a picket line crying that can’t feed their families?? C’mon, enough whining from the wealthy.
Speaking as a writer I think what most of you are forgetting is that this is a creative industry, these shows live and die on writers’ inspiration. It’s not like making the same product or selling the same thing year after year. We have no idea where the ideas come from, when or if they’ll dry up, but we have to somehow trust they’ll come day in day out. That’s not a great definition of job secruity. Unless you have actually originated a show (which is another ball game) you are paid a basic wage which has nothing to do with how well the show goes and is not and has never been commensurate with the pay or percentage of the profits that almost all the others involved cast/producers/directors get. Writers, despite being the life force behind shows (eg. The Friends cast would have been nice to look at for maybe five minutes but without the words and situations what hope the endless seasons and massive $1m per episode payouts?), have always been undervalued. The first gag you’re told when you get into the industry is about the wannabe starlet trying to sleep her way into the movies but was so dumb she slept with the writer.
The comments on here are ignorant. Especially the electrician comparison which was sort of amusing
Artists expecting to receive a percentage of sales from a new sales avenue is not asking for anything not given in any industry. The studio’s have abused this throughout the old bargaining agreement.
Since everyone here seems big on comparisons, a good comparison is a band who is getting 4 cents off of every album they sell, but no money from paid digital downloads.
Internet subscriptions and TV seasons on DVD are new revenue streams. It is not unfair for the actual creators of these products to get a piece. We are talking about a few cents from a 50$ box set. What is stopping the studio from offering all purchases via the net in the future and removing all royalties from the creators of these shows.
Big time writers are not on the picket line for themselves, it is for all the little writers that you haven’t heard of being paid a fraction of what JJ Abraham makes. It is truly astounding to me that on a piracy site, the majority of people would be supporting the studio’s that make billions in profit on the creativity of others.
It’s selfish, if the strike didn’t affect you, chances are you wouldn’t have an opinion. The blame for this strike is solely on the studio’s, the have not bargained in good faith and because of that, the strike will go on for a VERY long time.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJ55Ir2jCxk
This is a good link describing what this trike and residuals are about for those above that obviously don’t understand
another link with actor quotes, that blows this ridiculous notion that these are millionaires picketing to make more money. This strike is about your average writer working 9-5 making a modest living
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjOp9z4NxMc&feature=related
@ Thelonious
I couldn’t agree with you more. I guess I’m seeing that the people here are just as hypocritical as the media execs. Sad.
Ha , serves them right the greedy greasy producers , to be choked by the greedy greasy writers.
I hope it lasts long enough for them to open eyes, writers are the lowest in the chain … its unfair
@34,
So with your theory, actors should not get pad if the DVD is selling better either, right?
I mean, besides some moron fanboys, ie. BATMAN did not sell better for Nicholson was Joker but because the film was great and/or the direction of T Burton was almost flawless. Yet still Nicholon got paid from the profit as well, the 1st time in history.
Most of you just point fingers because your fav TV show is not on. Get a book, and read. It’s more interesting.
Excellent, a whoooole bunch of stupid TV ripped off the air. Couldn’t be more happy.
The only shame is the comedy central stuff. The rest is pulp.
oh well. good luck to the writers and hope they get their fair shares. my ‘must-watch-soon’ movie list is getting huge anyway, guess it’s time for me to hit some of that..
50 channels on TV and nothing worth watching – and they want to get paid more?
If they were paid a percentage based on success of the shows, we’d see much less rubbish on tv.
I read all of this on EZTV about 5 days ago.
This is a brilliant post – and very amusing as mentioned a couple of times that people commenting here are complaining that the writers are greedy and in their bosses pockets etc.
We are on here getting links to downloaded films and shows for free (regardless of provider cost etc)The writers get nothing.
Anyone who is blaiming the writers for this strike is a dumb ass really….
Comparing writing to plumbing or Electrical work etc is so stupid someone couldn’t think or say that could they…? lol
Thats the same as saying I have bought this cd dvd or book….an every time I play it or read it I have to pay the writer – its completely different.
Of course if you try and play it outside in a shop etc you have to pay the performance rights and someone makes money.
The writers point is every time the company makes money on the ads space selling our product we should get a cut.
Everytime a Episode is downloaded for money we should get a cut.
Its SOO simple and the guys in charge have said they make billions from downloads already.
They are just greedy and now the writers who are sticking up for themselves, their work and the future of the industry are being blamed and called greedy…..All you against the writers strike should be ashamed of your stupidity.
Anyone who thinks that Unions are greedy is a dumb ass..
If people dont stick together to stop the rich and powerful from ripping us off we will all be slaves…don’t you get it?
See how Hollywood works when they try rip off the writers.
The guys who get the credit for a show or film are the Directors or the Star – of all your fav films and shows you prob don’t know who the writer is or more likely don’t care…
Without the writer there is nothing..the buck starts there..
Watch this clip if you really don’t get it..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzRHlpEmr0w
All of these comments that the writers are getting the raw end of the deal here seem like shills, all set up to send people to this same youtube video.
Hollywood has more people sending them scripts than they know what to do with. Writers are a dime a dozen. People telling you that writers are poor, and that writers get treated poorly, and that writers are getting ripped off, are lying to you.
The poor people involved in the TV shows and movies that really need help are the production crews, who are now getting fired because of this strike. These people dont have residual checks of four cents per DVD coming in during the strike. They are losing their jobs as productions cease.
And to top it off, the average writer makes DOUBLE the amount that the average production crew member makes. The writers are simply trying to grab more for themselves at the expense of everyone else involved.
Shameful, wealthy, greedy pigs is what they are.
@5 and everyone else interested in “The Unit”, I found some news…

get a life you moron,
who else is on strike??? hmm lets see, well those plumber and electricans arent, they are actually working more than 2 hours a day, and its not tapping a keyboard and have a maccio-super-tall-latte-without-creme. and then complaining cos they havenet got enough money to sit around and do jack all day.
only 2 good shows on the list are heroes and scrubs. the rest ca die away and never come back imo
For what it’s worth, I’m looking for a job. I speak English natively and can amass a rather intellectual dialogue when I choose to do so.
If there’s any scripts that need writing, I surely would jump at the chance to help out.
By the way, I don’t live in America if that helps
The new My Name Is Earl episode is out:

Good lord, it looks like the writers are doing you (the ones complaining) a favor, they’re giving you a chance to do something else than stare at your stupid tv for 2 hours, eating crappy food and publicity.
Go writers, you deserve the money.
@ 11 & 13
Southpark writers are not members of the WGA thats why scripts and production continues.
@8
Family Guy will continue –
“Fox is producing fresh episodes of its animated comedy “Family Guy” without the participation of its striking creator Seth MacFarlane, who does many of the main voices, sources said.
The last episode completed before the Writers Guild of America strike began November 5 aired Sunday. Fox and sibling studio 20th Century Fox TV had the choice of going into reruns or continuing the show without MacFarlane, whose outspoken defiance of his employers has made him a cause celebre for striking writers.
After a large writers rally outside the Fox lot on Friday, where he was one of the speakers, MacFarlane said the studio could proceed without him, though he hoped it would not.
20th TV had no comment on the matter Tuesday but confirmed that it remains in production on new episodes. The first episode finished without MacFarlane’s blessing has been delivered to Fox. Sources said it is one of three very close to completion, with others in various stages of production.”
Here’s honest to goodness confession, I hate this darn strikes, esp. these writers, don’t want them to go on strike, they are affecting my damn life!! Night time is scheduled for watching these TV Shows! I don’t care about anybody’s cause, I just want my TV shows back and unaffected!!! So, get back to work you lazy, greedy, insatiable scumbags!!
@Skeev
You link to a video that outright lies about the facts. The video somehow tries to make the connection that Viacom suing Youtube for copyright infringement is the exact same situation as the writers strike. lol!
The writers get paid by the studio as soon as they hand over the story they have written. It is an exchange that goes like this:
Writer: Here is my latest story I have written. Will you buy it from me?
Studio: Yes, we will buy it. Here is a check for an amount we have agreed on. Will you accept this check for your story?
Writer: Yes, I will accept this check as payment for my work. Thank you.
A movie or show that becomes a hit will now have a writer knocking on the door of the studio:
Writer: Can I have more money please?
Studio: We already paid you.
Writer: Yes, I know I sold my story to you, but now you have found a new way to sell that story to your customers, I would like some of that new money you are getting.
Studio: Ummmmm…what?!
and oh by the way… YEAH you’re right.. I’m SELFISH! always been always will be!
give them what they ALL want (money)
8/16 episode of lost, come on am dieing of the F***ing wait.
STOP THE STRIKE, PLEASE
@ 15
Daisies creator extraordinaire Bryan Fuller informs me that the show’s ninth episode — the last one for which a script is written — can function as a season finale in the event the strike extends into the new year and beyond.
“As we were scrambling to rewrite [Episode 9],” he reveals, “we added several elements that will put many balls into the air and hopefully encourage the audience to come back and see how they land.”
Fuller confirms that production on the potential season finale got under way today, which means “our crew will now be able to work through Thanksgiving.”
@31
13 episodes have been produced for ‘Chuck’
————————————————-
The fourth season of Sci Fi Channel’s “Battlestar Galactica,” which was set to shoot through till March 10, will wrap today because “they will have completed shooting on all existing scripts,” a network spokesman said.
Hope you asked EZTV before you plagiarized half of their news atricle =\
As a writer I have to say…it’s NOT hard work. But then again, I’ve never been paid a cent for my work, so whether or not it’s hard doesn’t really matter much if I’m not being bought up by a studio. Instead of fantastic work, fantastic writing, they’re going to pick up someone else’s story that’s poorly written and boring. You all know this happens, just look at the list of shows up above. God awful with small exceptions.
So I dunno but if it was me I’d take what I could get considering the difficulty of going up against a million-plus other writers, having the top picks decided by a few people who think their personal opinions on what makes a good story, worthy of television or whatever, are gold and can’t possibly be wrong. What are the odds of that happening? Probably pretty slim I’d imagine. Definitely don’t think this is “fair”, but that’s how it goes. If you don’t like what they’re offering you for your writing, wal-mart is still hiring.
I don’t see anything wrong with these hard working people getting payed more… Oh yeah, I do, less profit to the corporations that fund these shows and then crappier shows. Now who wants to see a soap? But the corporations may just increase the cost of advertising.
@69
To say that because the studio’s who are very rich will start making crappier show’s because they don’t have the money for good ones is ridiculous. The studio’s have plenty of money, they just want to keep it all for themselves, for their top executives.
@62
Yes, writers get a flat sum for the shows they write, and then they get a small fee for every show put out on video. Yet they aren’t getting that money, because apparently new methods of distribution exempt the media companies from the rules.
“The video somehow tries to make the connection that Viacom suing Youtube for copyright infringement is the exact same situation as the writers strike. lol!”
Yeah… About that, they aren’t the same thing, and the writers realize that, and most people realize that that watch the movie. Apparently not you though. What they are doing is making a metaphor. Maybe you’ve heard of those?
@56
Your a dumb ass. Period. Anyone that thinks writing tv shows or anything else is like it is shown in movies is an idiot, and you’re obviously one of those people.
—
That’ll be all.
Guess I’ll try and expand my viewing, by trying some other series that are torrented, during the strike. Might find something else that I like.
oX.
Get the RIAA to sort this out !
Bring on the DOCUMENTARIES!!!!
yesssss.
@28 Yes, that’s what I was implying. I think yours is a little bit clearer.
what does “On hiatus” mean
@75: On hold… dumbass.
if they do that to LOST I’M GOING TO BE FREAKING PISSED.
ALL I know is that ELLEN is a big lezzie douche-bag SCAB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Screw the writers. 99% of the crew doesn’t get any sort of residuals. How many writers can’t work because they get injured at work? How many writers have to work outdoors in snow and the rain?
what is wrong with smallville…??when apears episode 8? it supposed to apear in november 15…i waited since every day checked if apeared..but nothing..they are in strike or what?
…thx

if You Wrote a Movie and you got paid ” $10″ per page its 10,000 pages long and your best buddy in the world made a movie 10,000pgs long… Company A is willing to pay your $10 + .04C per dvd but Company B will pay £10 + .4c + BENIFITS for 5 yrs.. who would you go with? i know where your buddy would go!
These people that write script, movies books yes like it has been said in a comment above a few time , get paid once! smaller ammounts than actors Producers director, for what? there minds creativity! if they did not think about the things to be writen the guys that yeah.. work 18 hours a day would be $40,000 a year poorer! and would not have a job.. i think all the Writers are looking for is worth! a little epreciation for what they do and create.. hell when i sell my movie i want top Doller paying for it.. wouldnt you?
