Webmaster gets 7 years for piracy

It’s not a good idea to risk with selling an illegal software if you live in the USA. The owner of one of the nation’s largest Internet software piracy Web sites has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison. Nathan Peterson, 27, of Los Angeles, sold products copyrighted by companies such as Microsoft Corp. and Adobe Systems Inc. at a huge discount on his site, iBackups.net, prosecutors said. The site began operating in 2003 and was shut down by the FBI in February 2005. In addition to Friday’s 87-month sentence, U.S. District Court Judge T.S. Ellis III ordered Peterson to pay restitution of more than $5.4 million and to forfeit the proceeds of his scheme, which included homes, cars and a boat.Peterson pleaded guilty in December in Alexandria to two counts of copyright infringement.

Justice Department and industry officials called the case one of the largest involving Internet software piracy ever prosecuted. Last month, Ellis sentenced a Florida man to six years in prison for selling illegal copies of computer programs on another site, BuysUSA.com. Big Brother is always watching you…

What a tit. What the hell do you expect when actually selling pirated software on the net and then going about buying boats, cars and houses? Having a site from which you sell sutff like this is practically screaming to get attention from the feds. Tit.

7 years is still a very long time for a totally non-violent crime. People have got less for stabbing someone.

It’s scary – 7 years for just for warez is a lot of time. But you have to remember, that he was doing it “big time”. That’s similiar in scale to some tax frauds and so.

Thats what you get if you try sell illegal software for a profit, if its for personal use i think its ok though =D He got what he deserves i guess.

  6. September 11th, 2006 | 11:18

yeah, he had to be stupid. but hey, like Yurg said, 7 years between people who killed, murdered or sexually misused some other people? this is imho too much…

I think that better punishment for these people is a huge fine, rather than to put them in jail. Jail doesn’t cure them from selling pirated software, money loss will :)

he’ll probably sell pirated software in the PC ward. but he should have been smarter with his money. spreading it around. now when he’s out there is not way to be happy with his income.

child molesters get 5 years, this guys getting 7. that sentence is a facking joke.

It’s not that “Big Brother is watching you…”, it’s just that as soon as you start a web site there is a one in a million chance that a cop or another government official also comes across this site.

Well, you all seem surprised by this? Really, it goes with the current trend. If in the US you release a movie on the internet before it’s official release date you get 10 years in prison.

Literally, it’s better to rape and murder a child while you are high on oxycotton that to pirate a damn movie.

It about time that enuff of us speak out that the government will be forced to listen. The US, and in some ways now the Canadian government, have made it more of a priority to stop people from, HEAVEN FORBID, getting something for free, than to stop violent crime.

Take a step back, oh say, 5 years to the day. Make it 10-51am september 11 2001.

Do you really think you, on that day, and everyone else, wanted to make anti-piracey the priority? really? Doesn’t it anger you to think that our governments are spending more money on stopping us from watching movies than stopping murderers?

that said, that guy is a moron and deserves whatever he gets, maybe not the anal raping, but hell, have atleast HALF A BRAIN.

morons like that are the ones making it harder on us, the honest hardworking pirates :)

To say that is to sound like an anti-american. I doubt that is the case, the real problem lies with most fo the g8 countries going along these paths.

You can’t blame the US without blaming Canada and the UK, and I’m sure some others aswell.

Murdering someone out of compassion is less punishment i think.
A murderer could be out on the streets in less..
I think that this guy was a dumbass for selling illigal software , but 7 years!! That could also be called a crime.
Someone like Bush should than recieve a lifelong imprisonment compared to what this guy did.

I think 7 years is about right, becuase what he did is a lot different than people who share etc, he was stealing and profiting from it. IMO piracy only becomes stealing once you make personal profit form it.

He crossed the line and got what he deserved.

As for other crimes? Well yeah its probably true to say crap sentances are given and yes its true stuff like this is given priority and yes thats wrong. But what do you expect? Its the USA everything and everyone in it is purely driven by money.
