    @13,
Yes. Subtitles work great. I have been using this for years. Works graet for everything I throw at it, including mkv files. Try it out.

I went back to the lastest older version 2.2.3.258

I don’t like how they have the menu system with chapters selection..just takes up space and reduces overal quality of the movie. It also loads slower in my dvd player. I can skip forward through the chapters with my remote, which im sure most of you end up doing anyways…

sadly, convertxtodvd is starting to turn into bloatware

ya bloatware…their trying to give more bang for the buck, like nero keeps doing

The older versions are more like a lot of lightweight freeware apps. Light, easy to use, get the job done every time.

i don’t think it’s bloatware alert,at least not yet.I mean only the sound events are horrible, but you can turn them off.I ask for good quality conversion and fancy menus.

I wonder if this version actually works. Used a previous version of 3.something ,created a dvd, it played in my comp, but not in any of my dvd players. Converted same movie to dvd in version 2 and had no problems. :(

  27. Me
    May 13th, 2008 | 21:36

yo goob don’t bash a free application because you tried playing a coaster on some DVD players.

you probably burnt it at like x16 when the fastest you should go with burning a DVD Safely is like x8 (at most)

    May 13th, 2008 | 21:39

how come this program never seems to make a disk more than 2.5 GB does that the quality is not as good?
i mean Nero Vision always burns a full disk

  29. hodad
    May 13th, 2008 | 22:26

Very fast conversions but lacks multi-pass option. Tends to leave a grid look in dark scenes. 2 is my favorite converting program still. Haven’t tried 3 yet. My only other complaint is that sometimes they wouldn’t play back on PS2. Does anyone know if they fixed this yet?

  30. david
    May 13th, 2008 | 23:27

great program but i agree with some here, older versions are better. Default menus are simple and ugly but it’s much easier and faster.

  31. Lol_Gadaffi
    May 13th, 2008 | 23:48

With version 3, be sure to set ‘video resize method’ to ‘user defined’ because the default setting is an auto crop that is not good.

And if you want a better quality DVD learn how to use TMPGenc Xpress because you’ll be surprised by the better video quality.

    @33

I agree, but, like you said, you have to learn how to use it. ConvertX is more user friendly.

how fast is it? with winavi, it converts an avi file in about 30mins then burns in about 10mins on average. how long does convertx take to do everything? i have used dvdfab platinum and wasn’t really impressed…

love this program, never had a problem with the older version. i do have 2 questions
1 how is it at converting hi def mkv files, i mean is the output still hd?
2 whats the best program to convert hi def mkv files to avi or wma? my movie player plays those, aswell as xvid or divx so converting them to what ever looks/sounds the best and is the quickest.
    all answers appreciated.

“1 how is it at converting hi def mkv files, i mean is the output still hd?”

Not, sure if this is what you’re asking, but you can’t convert HD files onto a dvd and still have high-def quality.

old version 3.0.9 meets many problem with sub/idx subtitles, fixed it in this version, any one test?

  46. hodad
    May 14th, 2008 | 07:43

It takes about 40 minutes to convert a movie, so it’s a little slower than winavi. I burn with nero. I burn movies at 16x safely all the time too- Plextor + Taiyo Yuden. If you use poor writers/media sometimes you will get poor results even at 4x.

  47. bigbawmcgraw
    May 14th, 2008 | 08:04

I don’t like the menu of v3 and you have to change the name of the file before converting. It does create files of correct size and quality though which was a pain with v2. mkv files don’t need to be shrunk after conversion which was the case before. Also, faster conversion speeds for me, up from ~80fps to ~140fps

Hi, I have a couple questions for the elite among us…

When taking a HD 1080/720p mkv file(6-8gigs) and throwing it into convertx and putting it on a 4.7gig dvd-r does it retain most of the video quality as well as the audio? About how much quality is lost?

Whenever I load up any large file into convertx it always says I am using 2.5-.7gb on the disc in the lower left hand corner. How can this be if I have a 4gig dvd-r in the drive? Do I need to change a setting or something?
    Thanks

One complaint with this, it slows internet speeds to a crawl.
Speed test showed it tanks on a continuos basis.
Then i check on what was being killed, the app phones home the entire time you convert, and i even turned off the feature to “phone home”.

    Crap App. Uninstalled and deleted.

if you use sony dvd-r or +R you have no problems with this software. it depends on the quality of the discs you buy, you buy cheap ones you’ll get a cheap copy. i have tested this alot of times, i never had one problem with any of those discs. always played in the dvd player i recommend using the dvd-r..
i also noticed on the other releases of this program when you tried to drop the avi file into the box it said error not recoginzable file. if you go and look and see at where it shoudl have you dvd drive listed in vso menu it will be blank. i had to uninstall it and look through my p.c for the older version of vso. you have to totally clean them out for it to work.. (well it worked for me anyway) defiantely take my advice get sony dvd they are the best. Couple of dvd makes that will not come out right or possible crash your computer it happened to my friends p.c blue screen .. Staples(no), CompUsa(no) , Dynex(no),Verbatin(good), Maxell(no), FujiFilm(ok) , TDk(ok), memorex(ok) , Sony(good)

Same thing with trying to add a video sample, it only plays a few seconds and starts over. how do i make it play more of the sample or the audio file? any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Something strange happens here. When I use this program I keep losing bout 100mb of space. I went from 24gb on a laptop HD clear down to 11gb. I emptied out my cache and temp folders and deleted the files after being burned, but I keep going down in space 11.1gb-11.0gb-10.9gb etc. What could be causing this? This only happenes when I use THIS program and it happens on my desktop as well!
