VMware Fusion V2 0 0 MAC OSX-HOTiSO

Since I have nothing to do, I might just post this one also: VMWare Fusion, for you Mac-users released by HOTiSO. This app is quite handy, I think lots of you will use this :)

Run Windows applications just like Mac applications
Say goodbye to the Windows desktop and use the VMware Fusion Launch Palette or Spotlight to easily launch your Windows applications. Switch between all your Windows and Mac applications using Expose. Keep your favorite applications in the Dock, bring forward only the application you care about, and use your familiar Mac keyboard shortcuts the whole time.

Turn back time on your PC
Capture and save the exact state of your virtual machine with VMware Fusion’s innovative Snapshot feature. If your Windows virtual machine becomes unresponsive, use the Snapshot feature to rollback to a known stable state with the click of a button.

Get the most out of your Mac hardware
Take full advantage of 64-bit and multi-core processors of your Mac for maximum flexibility. You can run 64-bit operating systems such as Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit Edition or leverage Virtual SMP to create and run multi-processor virtual machines.

Our cutting-edge 3D technology even lets you to play select DirectX 8.1 games on your Mac. Plus, get full read/write support for CDs and DVDs and complete USB 2.0 support–even for proprietary video cameras, Bluetooth devices and other Windows-only peripherals.

Run multiple operating systems on your Mac with ease
Easily use UNIX-based operating systems such as Linux and Solaris right alongside Windows and Mac OS X, with the ease and simplicity you’ve come to expect from your Mac. MAC = media access control

It’s Mac. It’s not an acronym. How hard can that be?

Is this any better then running bootcamp ?

I run bootcamp now for music production, only for the typical “i cant find it on mac excuse”

And it runs a bit crap sometimes.

    Would this be better ?

    > Is this any better then running bootcamp ?

Bootcamp requires a reboot. This allow you to run OS X and Win side by side. In terms of raw performance Bootcamp will be superior though.

as for why one might want this:
    1st situation:
damn printer works best with windows drivers. my evolis pebble really only works under winxp. so when i have a job to print, i just boot up fusion and do it.

    2nd situation:
damn poser installer exe files. i love the poser stuff, but a lot of the character files are only installed from windows… so! i set the runtime folder as shared to my vmware application. boot vmware. run the installer from within fusion and choose the shared directory as the insaller destination.

    lots of other situations.

basicly if its a quick need, a low impact application, then its more convienient to use fusion.

Thanks a bunch, always nice to see Mac apps here, but again:
Please please please please please create a sub-category for Mac apps, to make them easier to find. It’s not too much work to add one single tag more to Mac posts, isn’t it?
    :)

“Is this any better then running bootcamp ?”

    “fusion rocks. bootcamp is doucheware.”

Mac’s are computers just like so called “PC’s”.
Bootcamp simply allows you to boot Windows on your Mac “computer” the same as you would on a “PC”.
Windows will perform as well as your computer allows it to.. Bootcamp has nothing to do with performance.

I still find it fairly amusing that the “Fusion” version of VMware is ONLY available on the Mac. I also find it amusing that the Windows version of VMware actually does NOT have the option of installing Mac as one of your possible virtual desktops (sure, you can get it to work by selecting “other”, but thats not the point)…

Trying to fix a problem that rightfully shouldnt have existed in the first place; falling back onto Windows because your Mac stops short of where you need it to be in not an “advantage”…

Anywho, Ill stop my rant now since I kinda forgot where I was going…

i’d rather have it the other way around. my processing power should be dedicated to gaming and hidef media encoding/decoding. the mac is for everything else to make it look purty…like browsing and checking mail. otherwise i dont see any point to the OS.

    > Bootcamp has nothing to do with performance.

    Nonsense.

When you use Bootcamp you are using your Mac like a regular old PC. All the resources are dedicated to just Windows. With a solution like VMWare or Parallels you’re running Windows in a virtual environment next to OS X. OS X and the virtual environment have to sare resources (RAM, CPU, GPU, etc.) and therefore your instance of Windows will see less resources available to itself. It’s not because one solution performs better per se, it’s just how they run.

That all said, even though Bootcamp can give you better performance there is a price to pay: you have to reboot and cannot run OS X and Win side by side. Depending on what you do one solution will probably make more sense than the other. If your workflow relies on one Win app but the rest is in OS X you will probably want a virtual instance of Win. If you’re a gamer concerned with max performance you will probably prefer Bootcamp.

This is most likely for legal reasons. Apple’s EULA does not allow you to virtualize Mac OS X at all. Mac OS X Server may be virtualized, but only on Apple hardware. It is a violation of OS X’s EULA to run it on non-Apple hardware.
