Vista SP1 public beta test next week
Microsoft on Tuesday said that it has reached the “release candidate” with the first service pack for Windows Vista, with plans to make the test software available publicly next week. It is releasing the test code this week to the 15,000 or so people who have been beta testing SP1 already, and will also make it available on Thursday to those in the MSDN and TechNet developer programs. “We feel really good and we look forward to receiving feedback from our larger set of testers,” said David Zipkin, a senior product manager on the Windows Client team. Microsoft also said on its Vista blog on Wednesday that it will make available a “blocker” that will allow customers who have Vista and use Windows Update to block SP1 upon its final release to allow for further testing. Microsoft offered a similar option with Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Service Pack 1 is mainly designed as a collection of bug fixes and performance improvements rather than an attempt to add new features. Among the changes that are more feature-related is the ability to use BitLocker encryption on multiple hard drive volumes as well as changes to the desktop search feature, which were made to satisfy antitrust concerns from Google. The software maker has made some changes to SP1 since it began testing it earlier this year. In particular, the company has worked to reduce the size of the update as well as the amount of free space required to perform the update. Vista still requires up to 4.5GB of free space for a typical user, but that’s down from the 7GB required in earlier beta versions. Most of that space is returned back to the user. For some people, though, particularly those with ultramobile machines or running Vista in a partition on their Mac, the free space limit can be an obstacle. I guess there were really MANY bugs when this update takes gigabytes of space…

Vista working fine for me so i’m not going to test this but be my guest if you want to add a lot of bugs to your system
Get Linux already! Games blah! hardware blah! blah blah!
http://www.ubuntu.com and stop the anal bleeding!
Here is a trick to download SP1 via Windows Update before its public release: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/12/06/download-and-install-windows-vista-sp1-rc1-via-windows-update/
atlas, what is a gamer supposed to do with linux? care to enlighten me?
just 2 words : vista sucks….until it will apear a keygen activator like office 2007 has it….i ll wait for windows xp sp3….xp is more reliable than vista …and much faster too….vista has lots of compatibility isues…starting with the audio drivers….:(….cheers !
The sp1 is that big cos it pumps up the kernel-base to the same as in the server2003
^ You must have a crap PC then, it works perfectly for me.
@ the hitcher
Try getting a good pc then vista will run perfectly ! I use 64bit vista and have no problems with any drivers !! Vista is far superior to xp at most things !!
I dont get it whay daz linux lovers and vista haters go to this forums man stop whining about vista u r complaining becouse u cant run it get your self a good pc then run 64 vista and then come back and whine if u can i hated beta ver of vista but now it is wonderfule so to get to the point if u dont have something productive to say stop whining about vista…
all the good games have native linux ports. The rest work with cedega. Being dumb and running vista is not linux fault.
you -test- a -beta- of a -service pack-, think about it…
@hairy beaver
I dont have a craap pc …my config is P4 3.0 ghz, 2 gb ram, nvidia 7800 gt…. and i m not whining about vista because i dont use it…. i ve have tested with some appz and i dont like it how it runs with them…. try to make a video work on vista and you will see whats the point…
Come on guys…..don’t you know any thing?
how can vista run perfectly hitcher when just over half of pc hardware does not have vista drivers and earlier versions of windows drivers and simply not compatible with vista?
It works perfectly on systems that are designed for vista because the p.c manufactures use hardware that the drivers are compatible with visa.
Even with compatible hardware drivers……vista still sux.
I had a stupid dialog to click ok on every move I made with administrator rights. How crappy is that?? not to mention my trusted firewall and antivirus programs would not work with vista. How is this perfect??
P4 3.0ghz is a crap computer, everyone is under no illusion that the Pentium 4 netburst architecture sucked.

I have vista 32 running on quad core.. 4gb of ram.. Nvidia 8600 gts… my vista runs fine… But my system dual boots with Ubuntu gutsy.. and that is pimp… just wish I could get my adobe cs3 programs running on there.. along with some games.. other wise i still need vista for the time being… Each one has their positives and negatives… use whatever one you like best, and end it there.
Personally I could’nt stand ubuntu with its pathetic attempt at a GUI, Gnome which sucks the **** . Good thing linux is customizable, installed Kubuntu from the commandline which works way better.
Vista is okay, i like it for the visuals… if you complain about UAC or incompatible drivers, you really shouldn’t, what else would you expect when using new software… buy a car once they revamp the model and wait for the bad reviews to come in only to be fixed by later models… the P4 was the worst chip from intel, Some P3’s beat it in benchmarks, so dood, you got to upgrade. unless you buy random cheap hardware, all major manufactures (minus ATI, but come on, who uses ATI) have working drivers. they may not be the best, but they are usable, which is the most important… i can’t stand linux only because i can’t use it, maybe that’s how you vista haters are… it’s not amazing, but come on, once you see how good it looks, could you really go back to XP easily… and for the guy with video problems, it’s called codecs, you need them… vista had some problems in the very beginning but i get all my stuff to play… try VLC as well, small and easy player
Problems Ive found with Vista ; comm surrogate errors with video, no modem driver on my Acer Aspire factory installed Vista, No WPA wifi access on Toshiba factory vista laptop, no SPDIF output, Norton Ghost ceases to work ( as does half my software ), canon scanner now causes BSOD, etc etc etc How much time I’ve wasted on this rubbish I cannot remember. So puleez MS employees posting on here, NO-ONE is buying these lies ; we’ve seen for ourselves.
and that fool talks about codecs hahahahah… go google ” com surrogate” before you speak
4.5GB?! No thanks. I’ll stick to 200Mb Win2k with all patches and updates, that works better and faster.
Oh and for the fools who keep saying your computer sux or get a better computer: you’re EXACTLY the kind of fools m$/intel and co loves. Because you’re easily parted with your money and happy to pay more and more money for less and less performance and return. You know what they say about fools and their money.
microsoft are usless at detecting pirated copies of vista i run vista ultimate (PIRATE) it passes windows genuine vallidation
All you lot who complain about problems with Vista make me laugh. I’ve been running it for a good 6 months now, and I do a lot with my sucky pc including gaming, video editing, 3d animating etc and I have absolutely no problems. Drivers are all good, no crashes, no problems.
You all sound like a bunch of whining 12yo’s cos mummy or daddy won’t give you their hard earned dosh to build a decent PC… lol
Xp is twice faster then Vista, and it doesn’t bring any good improvements at all. if you keep Vista and Xp on your Hard Drive you can probably realize.
No matter of Good Computer or not, you can’t but a OS for a new transparent interface.
Wonders me what things did Bills company stole this time
first from apple and now they steal from linux haha
Heh…Linux…FYI, I did try to go Linux about 2 months ago. I thought Id see why everybody is always raving about how cool it is. Unfortunately, the process for updating graphics drivers alone, which takes about 5 minutes on Windows, took me around 5 hours to figure out on Linux with the backing of some 30 forums and support sites. Even after getting them installed properly (which I DID get them installed properly), Linux wouldnt load the graphical GUI…which kinda defeats the purpose…Linux may be all-that-and-then-some if you already know EXACTLY how to run it in a professional way. Otherwise, STFU…Ill move over to Linux the day Winux is made!
Vista is great, but it isnt worth buying, IMO. That said, Im running Vista x64 and I love it. Plenty of features to keep me happy, and even though it is a resource hog, I think anybody with a half decent computer should be fine…So please, spare us your pathetic attacks on Vista…and dont install SP1 until its official release, or you will be classified as an idiot by the general population…
yeah vista sux..but don’t forget When XP released…everyone said that 98 is much faster..and now the same case is with vista…and people also upgraded their pcs for xp that time sooner or later. So in near future everyone will hav to use vista. And i’ll start using it after vista sp2 and when all my fav softwarez get ready for vista…..till that time XP is KING!!!!!!!
…and by that time “Windows 7″ will be released and this whole spiel about “the new OS sucks” will start all over again…
wow. All this “vista sucks cos no drivers” blah blah blah
Does noone remember the problems XP had when it first came out?? Its a new programme for chrisssake. *Most* hardware runs (at least in part) with the generic vista drivers now anyway. The SP1 will address most of the known issues its been having, and it appeared stable even in Beta form. (Hubby is a beta tester, we’ve been testing vista since its first Beta couple years ago)
It baffles me the amount of Vista Haters, or Non-vista users who feel that they MUST post in a vista thread. Can’t see the logic in that one.
