Vista SP1 Due Out in Next Few Weeks?

The first service pack for Windows Vista could be out as early as Feb. 15, according to sources close to Microsoft.

The wait is nearly over for the first service pack for Windows Vista, according to sources close to Microsoft.

Microsoft has said the highly anticipated service pack would be out in the first quarter of this year, but some say it could be available in the next few weeks, more than a month before the quarter ends on March 31.

A Taiwanese news outlet Wednesday reported in a story that Vista SP1 would be released Feb. 15, but “that date is as good as any other,” said Michael Cherry, an analyst with Directions on Microsoft. “For all we know, they could make it available tomorrow.”

Through its public relations agency today, Microsoft declined to comment on the Feb. 15 date beyond reiterating the software would be available in the first quarter. Still, several sources who work closely with Microsoft said a mid-February release is not unlikely, and they expect the software to be out before the end of March.

Many believe the SP1 milestone is the one that will bring about a new wave of adoption for Vista, especially among business customers that have been awaiting the service pack’s release before updating employee desktops. The combination of SP1 and Windows Server 2008, due out on Feb. 27, is expected to bode well for Vista adoption in the enterprise and medium-sized business sectors.

Hopefully this service pack will mean some of the issues with Vista will be resolved!

I think SP1 isn’t gonna change that much. Some sources saying, it’s just a bunch of updates. SP3 XP is what most people are waiting for, I guess. Hopefully it gets ready soon.

ya, i got an acer 5920 with 2GB of ram 1.5 dual core2 and i must say that vista does suck in general, my old AMD 1.8 atholon with 750 MB ran windows XP so smooth, loaded within a couple of minutes and didn’t have almost any bugs and worked with everything, my new laptop came with vista, and it sucks, it eats up all my resources, the only reason i don’t go back to XP is because my vista backup is on a hidden partision on the drive and i don’t think i would be able to get it back… i installed SP1 beta, it does improve somewhat the speed of copying, shutdown and stratup, but not by much, hope the final version will be better…

also alot of appz dont work on it, like battlefield 1942, i miss that game, i am in the states now and can’t play with my brother back in israel cuz it is all buggy on vista…

    What is RTM?

Also, is sp1 expected to increase the efficiency of the os? Even if does, still not upgrading to Vista. Lol, not like I use my XP partition much (just for games), I prefer OSX. Damn Microsoft and the fact that Halo 2 is only for Vista. DAMN THEM!

It would be interesting to see how many of all the bashers have tried Vista seriously. I would guess about 1-5%. Most of them probably tried it at launch or when the RTM was released. Have those people forgot that XP hade at least this many problems if not more than Vista at launch? Also, have they even considered that since release, they might have fixed some if not most problems people had? After having used Vista x64 for a few months there is no way I’m going back. I haven’t had any noticable problems (and remember that the 64bit version I run is bound to have slightly more problems). The few minor ones I’ve had were very easy to fix. I admit I was worried about the driver support for my Creative Audigy since we all know Creative aren’t really keen on release solid stable drivers. However the latest build has proven perfectly stable. All in all my system is rock solid. What is most satisfying however is how well my Quad-Core and 6GB of ram are utilised by the OS. The tasks are divided among the cores better and having Vista automatically prefetch basically all my programs I use at any time of the day into ram is a fantastic feeling. Everything is silky smooth and increadably fast. Running XP on this machine didn’t even compare. :D

Sure, if you hate Vista going in you will probably still not like it after trying it for a day or two. However running newer hardware and seriously giving it a chance you might find your favorite MS OS yet. If you don’t, then hats off to you for trying it with an open mind. :)

    Poster 44.

am on an 512 cable line and so I’ve wasted a lot of time.
I did try 3 versions of Vista Ultimate and sat it up as I
wanted and yet it disappoint me greatly…
No look into the files while defraging :p
Defrag takes forever (even if you just made one.
And the system when you deal with programs and cracks on a
daily basis just do not work good at all Admin this and Admin
    that….stupid stupid slow working….If I do something
I don’t want the damn system to confirm every little damn
    detail…
Everything somewhat older do not work…So prepare for
    updates all the time….
And Please -lol- Give Vista a chance….why would I give
Bill Gates a lollipop ….do not think so…-lol-
Also the video is BAD….if you run your card to the TV
you get real low res from Vista BAD BAD BAD….
The AERO crap or whateverver it are called mess up the
graphic on Video drivers (Compare it on XP if you wish)
My graphic card had to be set less than on XP….so I could
not use the full power of it on Vista.
Updates are very slow too…and at times it don’t work.
The side bar just make the screen smaller and as someone said
earlier (What the f* you need two clocks for anyhow -lol-
I could have Vista without paying for it and still I don’t
want it…..and that friend are telling a lot of Vista…
And Yes my system are up to date to handle Vista…but why
should I give Vista half my computer resource just for some
stupid sidebar or somewhat movie effect background…
I work on my computer and if I want to see something
pretty I just take a walk out in Nature….—
So my last word on Vista are -BAD-

No #36 you aren’t missing anything. Vista works fine and always has. I have had it installed on my comp since March 2007 with exactly 0 problems.

You will see that all of the negative comments are generic rhetoric that is either “Vista sucks”, or “Vista is buggy”, or “XP is better”. There are no issues with Vista other than, yes it does use more system resources which if you have a computer with 2GB of RAM and Core 2 Duo processor will be absolutely NO PROBLEM (you could run it on a lot crappier hardware, but i wouldn’t recommend it).

When you read comments like #29 you just kind of chuckle because they are using a retail POS computer and clearly with their hardware could run Vista with ease however they run into “Level 9″ problems (thats the layer in between the keyboard and the chair) which makes their OS “suck in general”. As a general rule i don’t trust what people that don’t build their own computers say, as they are rarely (no wait, NEVER) an expert on the subject of computers.

Personally i think Vista is a very good replacement for XP and i am very happy with it, no complaints really other than “reduced functionality mode” which A) They are changing in SP1 so that the comp is still usable and B) is of no concern to people like me that have legitimate copies. As i have previously stated i would actually prefer to use OSX Leopard as it is a much more advanced OS, but you cannot install it on a PC and i absolutely refuse to buy a pre-built computer under any circumstances. Leopard is a very very futuristic and awesome OS, too bad its sold by a company that is greedier than Microsoft and Sony put together….. if thats even possible ;)

@54: You are right about SP3 for XP supposed to be nothing special.

About your last statement… :( Why say unfounded things like that for no reason other than bashing? I guess your nick explains it all. ;) Please prove me wrong :)

@jdizzle1337: We seem to be on the same page. ;) I agree Apple is much greedier than MS. They also draw a crowd of fanboys who often don’t know anything about computers (the same reason you mentioned). That is why I don’t like what they stand for. It also taints their products in my opinion. Having said that, OS X has some nice features but also a few bad things, like all other OS:s.

Considering that #51 didn’t find the option to turn off UAC it’s no surprise that he/she didn’t notice that the sidebar (which has lots of useful features other than clocks) is totally optional. Many of Vista’s other features are as well.

I have been using Vista SP1 v.668(RC) for about a month.
Vista + SP1 runs MUCH better. Several issues have been fixed, but Windows XP still is #1.

Installed XP SP3(RC) on one of my other windows boxes, and didn’t notice any difference from SP2+Upgrades.

It is rather ironic that you would say i was acting like Bill Gates’ girlfriend when you are championing an older
    version of his OS.
I know you are not very bright, otherwise you would know that
Peer Guardian works just fine with Vista.
Who am i to call you a moron? You could call it a lucky guess, but it is more like an educated guess from the way that you type, the way you talk about nonsense, that combined with my 17+ years of computer experience/
I don’t really think that everyone that dislikes Vista is a moron but a large majority are grossly misinformed or repeating rumors or stuff they read on the internet.
“Deal with it….this System are BAD.” I will let this statement speak for itself because it speaks volumes as to the type of person that thinks XP > Vista.
As for washing my mouth out with soup, that is a new one i never knew that soup could also be used to wash things. I will send an email to Bill Gates and make sure that he adds a tip of the day pop up to Vista and includes that sage advice.

Now if you will please GTFO of my internetz and go to school

1998 – “I’m getting a new OS for my computer!”

2008 – “I’m getting a new computer for my OS!”

Doesn’t anyone else see anything wrong with this picture?

I haven’t used Vista and I don’t intend to. Sure, the service packs may fix some of the bugs, but they won’t do anything to change the fact that Vista is a resource hog, that a lot of software doesn’t work properly on, and that Vista is “broken by design” with all the DRM crap MS shovelled into it. Then a few years down the road, just when Vista gets to the point where it’s stable and works fairly well, MS will come out with something new and it’ll be “Vista sucks, buy this!” It’s just a carrot on a stick…

As stated above: yes sp1 will get rid of the known ways around the activation cracks. SP3 for xp does it and since vista is the newest and most expensive os yet, it is likely that MS devs know about them and did something about it.
I’m sure there will be other ways to do it, but it will probably take a while or no time at all.

played with vista for about 2 weeks.. had about 7 blue screens.
most my games run smoother/faster on xp… altho i guess its possible that dx10 might be the cause of that with new shaders and stuff
the only game that actually did run smoother on vista was blacksite area51.. not the best game out there ^^

if your xp aint broken, there is no need to fix it with vista (vice versa i could say the same)

vista rocks… yall are just scared of change and its pathetic! vista will destroy xp once sp2 is released.. it already does but most of your computers prolly aren’t worth a damn! Losers

I’v been using Vista for a year, I’ve had to do a clean install of Vista about 3 times in that period to solve major problems, which is 3 times too many! Strangely I have never seen a blue screen though lol. But I would like to add that now I’ve got it customised properly and everything at this stage is running superbly, better than XP, its worth a second chance, but I’m not surprised that a lot of people gave up on it after initial use.

To be honest Vista is not that different from any other MS OS, ever since Win95 they have all sucked big time in the first year, the amount of problems I had with Win 98 make Vista look like the best thing ever lol

Just upgrade and stop winning kids, like it was already said, most of you didnt even installed Vista. In the beguinning of XP you could spend almost 1 night to find a specific printer driver.
After you try Vista for a week, you look at XP and it looks Pre-Historic, like windows 2000.

Just go play some wow on that marvelous XP, and stop crying.

huh windows 2000 still own!!! (ref. see market share)

When you need to have a STABLE embedded project… thats where w2k or XP embedded come to help!

  89. ELCouz
    January 25th, 2008 | 22:42

and also consider that on embedded you don’t have hdd like 10gb or more… sometimes your are limited to a 1GB compact flash hdd, 128-256 mb of ram and integrated graphic card like RAGE128!! ….vista cannot run on that !!

Seriously, what is the problem with Vista. I’ve been running it for months now and its running great. Games, apps run great. has a nicer GUI. I’ve never ran into a problem where something wouldn’t install because there was no driver. Digital camera, printer, usb mic, even my SB Fatality works.
Maybe your guys systems just suck. time to upgrade imo. I’m running crysis on full minus AA and Vsync and its running great. looks great too with DX10. Jump off the “we hate vista” bandwagon and actually give it try. Time to think for yourselves now kids. not what people tell you to think in articles you read on the interweb

Yes I agree it is a complete waste of an operating system. It does nothing better than xp. Nothing! I don’t want neat lookin crap on my desktop. I don’t want things moved all over god knows where just because they think it would be cool even though I must now click 10 times something I use to do in 2 clicks. Lets all throw away our powerfull good computers and buy insanely powerfull computers just to get the same performance we had before on xp to run vista.

Performace is #1 and Vista is severly lacking in that department. Its like me trading in my turbo honda running on regular gas for a regular honda running on racing fuel just si I think i’m getting the same perfomace but in reality it just doesn’t do it.

Dude 420 you said what I had in my head forever but could never put into words.

You are 100% right on and people that is the facts straight up. And I guess if they don’t listen now then maybe they will when the next windows comes out and hopefully is a good one and people realize that vista was really ME II! A BUNCH OF CORPORATE CRAP!

“Windows” has been the same since 98. so your telling me that XP wasn’t just the same old run of the muck Windows with neater graphics and gismos? They all do the same thing if you look at it. So if what you say is true then you to are a sheep. This all happend when XP came out. People were “afraid” I guess to use something new. So they all wanted to stick with ME and 2000. There is more to it then just flashy graphics. Sucurity. networking, DX10, ect ect. I cant tell you how nice it is to bring my computer to a lan and have 0 problems setting up my internet connection. Where before with XP, me or someone else would spend an hour trying to get it to see the network. Vista finds all networks and connects without a hitch. All being connected to each other making file sharing a hell of alot easier.

To be honest before I upgraded my computer I ran Vista on my 3.04 p4 with 2 gigs of ram and my 800XT. and it still ran fine. I upgraded my computer not so I could run Vista. but so I could run all the newer games and the ones coming out that used more then just shader 2.0. So why not get the newer technology. I don’t see a point in spending money on half ass gear. I’d rather buy the best thats within my budget. $1300 is not a bad price tag for a new system. Especially when that system can run anything you throw at it perfectly. I’d much rather spend $1300 now and not have to worry about it for 5 years then spend $500 now, #400 6 months from now and another $600 a year from now.

I’m not telling you that you have to run out and buy Vista right now or your an idiot. I was saying don’t call me an idiot because I happen to like Vista and run it on my System. Especially when half of you never even tried it. Just go by what everyone says. Like I said before. This happens with every new Windows that comes out. All the haters come out of the woodwork and bash it. Then they switch to it a year later and say how great it is. Sooner or later your going to have to use it anyway, Yes it takes more resources to run vista. just like video games and applications take more as technology advances. Better get use to it or get out of the game now. Or would you rather the world stop turning so you can play Doom3d?
