Vista activation cracked by brute force!

It looks like Microsoft’s unhackable OS activation malware has been hacked.

There is an active thread at the Keznews forums (account needed), and a summary on its main page about the crack.

It is a simple brute force attack, dumb as a rock that just tries keys. If it gets one, you manually have to check it and try activation. It is ugly, takes hours, is far from point and click, but it is said to work. I don’t have any Vista installs because of the anti-user licensing so I have not tested it personally.

The method of attack has got to be quite troubling for MS on many grounds. The crack is a glorified guesser, and with the speed of modern PCs and the number of outstanding keys, the 25-digit serials are within range. The biggest problem for MS? If this gets widespread, and I hope it will, people will start activating legit keys that are owned by other people

It won’t take long for boxes bought at retail to be activated before they are bought, and the people who plunk down money for the malware for real get ‘you are a filthy pirate’ messages. Won’t that be a laugh riot at the MS phone banks in Bangalore.

So, what do you do? There is really no differentiating between a legit copy with a manually typed in wrong key and a hack attempt. Sure MS can throttle this by limiting key attempts to one a minute or so on new software, but the older variants are already burnt to disk. The cat is out of the bag.

The code is floating, the method is known, and there is nothing MS can do at this point other than suck it down and prepare for the problems this causes. To make matters worse, MS will have to decide if it is worth it to allow people to take back legit keys that have been hijacked, or tell customers to go away, we have your money already, read your license agreement and get bent, we owe you nothing.

This is ugly for MS, and if it allows you to take back your legit keys, how long do you think it will take before people catch on to the fact that you can call in and hijack already purchased keys once you generate one that someone else activated?

No, this is a mess, and the problem is the very malware activation and anti-consumer licensing that MS built into Vista. Then again, it is kind of hard to feel sorry for them the way they screw their paying customers. We’ll give it three days before there is a slick GUI version with all the bells and whistles.

Thank you hackers of the world. I for one appreciate your efforts.

All we need now is for someone to figure out a way to update XP to DX10 and M$ are screwed.

“Won’t that be a laugh riot at the MS phone banks in Bangalore.”

I live in india ,bangalore and i heard that MS is recieving phone calls about activation problems for oem and retail vista as it would say that “the product key is already activated”.Within few days MS will be in the drain for sure.

Use linux people - it’s a way better choice than Vista. Personaly I recommend Ubuntu.

    Hmm..
The interesting part in this whole news is just the cdkey.
What diffrence is it between a cdkey to XP and to your CS:S? Nothing special I would say, u can get both if u just have the time-effort to generate one.

So… Whats the problem tho? Well, for the first you STEAL STEAL a key that someone else might have paid alot of money for.
This is ofcourse not accepted, its one thing to have a cracked-key which wont harm anybody. And have a stolen-key that will fuckup someone else key. But might be a thing to fix, if U can proove that u have the key u have is legit bought.

Another thing mentioned is that fast computer = fast key-gens.
And whats the major problem with this? Its ofcourse the passwords people has to everything. Nowadays it doesnt take many minutes to crack a password because of the CPU-power u got.
And thats fucked up totally. Soon u will need to have fingerprint or similar to be able to make suchs a long and advanced password that nobody can break in a day, and that u still will be able to remeber it in your head.

You all are just a bunch of losers.
Not earning enough to be able to buy your own legal copy.
    People without any principles.
If you want to use free software, use linux.
It is very stupide to yell at Microsoft and than use all there software. If you don’t like Microsoft than don’t use there products!
At least than you are honest and not a loser!

Jeroen: so what exactly are u doing on Rlslog? Spying for the softwarecompanies?
This whole site is about getting “freestuff” +britney info.

And ur concept work on all software. Why download a movie, game, music with more when u can be honest and buy it?

The only reason that ppl use these cracks are that the MS OS’s are WAY OVER PRICED, Especially in countries were 100$ is 10% of the salary!!!
I dont think many ppl would be bothered thinking of a crack if the OS costed 2$…
I myself like both MS OS’s and Linux OS’s but lets face the facts that not all the software is created for both OS’s…

i really don’t see the point in stealing product keys. it’s a very dirty way to get an activated windows vista. especially when there’s a working crack that harms nobody but MS.

The release name of the working crack is: Microsoft.Windows.Vista.Local.Activation.Server-MelindaGates

when it was just out, 3 months ago (or maybe it was released before) i tried using it. i installed a fresh copy of windows vista (MICROSOFT.WINDOWS.VISTA.ENTERPRISE.32BIT.VLM.DVD-EcHoS) and tried to activate it using the LAS (local activation server) it worked perfectly and i got an activated copy of windows vista enterprise! of course i ghosted back to my XP cause of drivers issue but not before i made a screen shot to remember :) (and ghosted the activated vista!)

here is the screen shot: http://www.mytempdir.com/1238279

lovely isn’t it? and i stole nothing from nobody (but MS).

    March 2nd, 2007 | 14:14

@ AdiJay that only works for business and Enterprise, lots of people want the ultimate due to it have media center and some other stuff. For ultimate, you need to do this or use the bios hack and lets face it this is a lot easier. Plus if you look at it there are so many potential keys that they chances you get one that someone bought are quite slim.

  22. March 2nd, 2007 | 14:32

Actually, there’s an even simpler method which is being widely practiced in the states. Go to the local best buy or target, locate a shelf full of Vista boxes, and note down the CD key to that box. Simple as that.

    March 2nd, 2007 | 14:57

@ Who if everyone “will check aprox. 10000 keys per 30 minutes. ” i think the chances are good to hijack a cd-key someone actually bought. about the vista ultimate i guess you’re right but still, stealing a cd-key is not the way. :/

I would disagree that vista was for gaming it plays games slower than xp. Sims 2 would occasionally lag and so would Oblivion always as i hit someone.
So few days ago i decided to format from 64bit ultimate. What i did like was when mounting games in damon tools i didnt need any protection bypassers C&C first decade and sims 2 seasons worked cause its obviously configuired diffeently, im going miss that.
But point im making today is why so many vista cracks? Does no one understand the time crack that first came out?
It resets for 30 days so it doesnt run out and even lets you update fully today from windows update.
    So no need.

    March 2nd, 2007 | 15:00

this is _no_ mess (do the math of the _insane_ ammount of Keyspace), and there will be “no” retail copy activated before they sell (again do the math: having an encryption with 128bit and the attacker guesses the right Key at his first attempt is still more likeley than s.o. bruteforcing a Key of s.o. else)
M$ will just have to narrow it’s keyspace of valid Keys on it’s server and the whole thing will be over - the question is do they really whant to (just now):
Who can say those Keys are not s.th. like a “try-out” Licence (like 30 days Grace * 3 rearms) but here the user doesn’t now after a few months the update Server will start naging?
Alone the fact that it is even possible to find a valid Key in this huge Keyspace (again we are talking of bruteforcing a more than 128 bit “encryption” even if M$ would allow 100 Billion valid Keys) is somewhat suspiccious.

So don’t get overly exited about this and keep in mind, M$ can pull the plug anytime they whant (and then it’s back to timestopers and KES)

Why not just use the Dr Chang crack and have a permanantly activated (by Microsoft themselves, no less) copy of Vista without stealing from people who pay for it?

    *sigh*

You’re all just gonna make it worse for yourselves in the future.

Don’t you see it? You haven’t won anything!

Microsoft wants you to be addicted and continue to use their software. They want you to pirate THEIR software. They want you to be totally reliant on it. (Which most of your clearly are already).

You keep pirating it, and it’ll simply justify their excuse for more harsher “anti-piracy” measures. They will find a way to collect from you folks.

Haven’t you noticed how they’ve made changes in WGA and their End-User License Agreement (EULA) for Vista? (Didn’t you notice how they’ve restricted virtualization use to only the more expensive verisons of Vista in their EULA?)…Notice how the Corporate license has completely changed in implementation?

They’ll keep going as long as they can get away with it.

When are you folks gonna learn?

If you want to give a big “FUCK YOU” to Microsoft, you stop using their products, and be very vocal about it.

Its the only way to hurt them…Their profit margins.

When you stop using their garbage, you’ll see big changes.

Namely, you won’t have to fuck with stupid anti-piracy measures and policies any longer. No more CD keys, phone Activations, WGA, EULA agreements, and so on. Just pop the CD in and go.

All I’m saying is, if you want things to change, have a good think about what you’re doing right now.

This article was copy and pasted from another site. Not impressed.
Anyways, this smethod is too dishonest for me, even pirates should have morals. Stealing from paying customers isnt cool. There are soooo many ways to haack vista.
    Timestopper for the win!

um, anything can be brute forced.. the problem is brute forcing a vista key takes millions of years.
im sorry but this is fake and im disappointed that it was put on this website.

  50. johndizoe
    March 3rd, 2007 | 19:32

yes this article was copied…. i think the BIOS hack is the best option although i never tried any of them yet… but it just seems like the best (most professional) option… and you dont even have to flash your bios for it to work either from what i read.

but i aint in no hurry since XP is still a overall better OS… atleast until vista get much better driver/software support i wont be using vista as a main os.
