Videogame industry: best year in the history

The video game industry has already recorded the biggest year in its history with another month of sales to go. U.S. video game hardware, software and accessory sales hit $2.63 billion in November, a 52 percent increase over last November, according to the NPD Group. The sales total so far this year is now $13.1 billion heading into December, traditionally the best month for video game sales. The jump was fueled by a 75 percent month-to-month increase in console software sales. Overall software sales in November totaled $1.1 billion. Hardware sales were also quite strong, aided by recent price cuts for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360.

Nintendo had the best month ever for its Wii, which sold almost 1 million Wii units. The company sold 350,000 of its 981,000 in November during the week of Thanksgiving. The Xbox 360 had its second best month ever selling 770,000 units. The biggest games of November were the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty 4, which sold 1.57 million copies. The next best selling games were Super Mario Galaxy (1.15 million units on the Wii), Assassins Creed (980,000 units on the 360) and Guitar Hero III (967,000 on the PlayStation 2.).

    I think PS3 wins for story mission games, 360 for online, and Wii for family oriented gaming
    i dont believe the wii should be classed with the 360 or ps3. just like pc gaming shouldn’t be compared to console gaming.
    but thats just my opinion.

    I’ve had a wii for 10 months, but honestly it’s only because i knew i could put a modchip in it, and play downloaded games.

    Will most likely buy a ps3 once the code geniuses will have managed to make it easy to play 720p/1080p .mkv files using linux on ps3.

    (following #5)
    and i will gladly BUY those ps3 games.
    the ps3 is a fantastic piece of hardware IMHO.

    I could have bought a x360 and flash the drive, but the failure rate is just too scary =[

    LOL exactly my point. computers shouldn’t be compared with consoles because there’s always is new hardware coming out for PC’s that will easily surpass the power of a 360 or a PS3. The only way i think it would be fair to rate PC and consoles, is if u were able to buy better video cards, CPU’s, and RAM for your 360/PS3.

    Why buy a pc in the form of a console? everything you need nowadays as a gamer u can find on pc so why buy a console??:P

    I dont have a console but i think the argument as to WHY (#14) is:

    They are a fixed hardware platform – every game runs the same on every system (unlike pc) so when u see a review or hear someone talking about a console game, you know you will get exactly that experience at home (unlike a pc game). Most games dont need patching – unlike pc games (due to all the different pc combinations of hardware and software) – Online gaming is a joy on 360 – just plug in and go, full community, voice, achievement points, marketplace – no cheating to worry about either!

    Best combination for most is a half decent laptop and a 360 – if u like buying games :)

    @12 xtazy

    there are games (usually port from console to pc) with performance issues even though you got quite powerfull pc,
    game such as blacksite area51 for example.

    Game like Rayman raving rabbits, its alot more fun playing with Wii than a PC.

    so your opinion about PC pwns all, i have to disagree

    ps:i dont own Wii, mostly i play games with PC

    @1 No it doesn’t, it’s just a toy and not even “next gen”
    (i.e. it’s just a Game cube in a new case)

    @3 And you base this on what?. The PS3 does not win on anything at the moment other then its Blueray player. I agree with the Wii comment though.

    @5 Exactly the same as me not modded my Wii yet….Bought a PS3 but there nothing worth buying for it that I can’t play on my 360.

    @8 Correct but keeping a PC up-to-date is verrry expensive!!!

    I think having a MacBook and a 360 is a good combination :-D
    Graphics in 360 are much better than PS3
    you can get your 360 chipped and dont pay much for the games
    get a 19′ LCD and connect both your MacBook and 360 to it and Enjoy
    The Exam Period is coming and I’m screwed with all this fun :-) )
    btw, Assassin’s Creed is amazing game,experience it

    I have a 360 and I just download all my games from p2p and burn them with XBOX Backup Creator and ImgBurn. No need for modding or anything else. I’m not exactly considering buying a ps3 because the few games that are out for it, are most likely available for 360. Assansins Creed, COD 4, Rainbow Six Vegas are truly some of the best games I’ve played. Waiting for GTA IV to be released but not expecting much after San Andreas. Rainbow Six Vegas 2 is going to be released in March 2008 so I’m waiting for that :D w00t

    hmmmm k soo what do you think its better for a gamer a pc or a console ?? with today’s standards consoles are closing in towards pc technology the biggest advantage was that the games for a console were much more complete and didn’t need patches or any bug fixes etc. but things seem to change i hear about many games for consoles that will go through the path of patching and moding now with the online consoling :P
    and what about piracy my fellow lechers ??? hahahahaaaa let us debate. :p

    Technically the PS3 hardware is better than the 360 but way more games have been released on the 360 platform. The XBOX 360 is also cheaper than the PS3 which is why more people buy it. I think that its safe to say that by the 2nd or 3rd quarter of 2008 we will see cheaper PS3 and more games coming out for them, thus more people will buy them. Thats when I’m going to buy my PS3 and enjoy awesome quality games. Its just like what happened with the PS2 and XBOX before the 360 came out, the PS2 had better graphics, was smaller, had less problems, and was obviously the clearer choice.

    I do not play console games but in the last few years have owned a psx, ps2, psp game cube and a NDS. the reason for having a console is its specialty i.e., playing games anywhere you want when u want , and it is simple for non tech people to manage a console for example buying a new game and playing it. on a console u open the packaging insert the disc and there u go. on the other side u must install the game configure it and the either u may try to optimize it so that u get something similar to what u see on the packaging or u try to figure out why do u get the error every time u try to launch the game.

    the reason why game developers prefer consoles is simply the costs. for a given console u have a single baasic config ( processor, resolution SDk etc) compared to unimagineable combination for a pc( processor, gr card, ram, resolution, OS, IO devices)

    @28
    Actually the PS3 is not “technically better” it just uses a different architecture to do its business the only “real advantage” it has over the 360 is it has more space on its BR drive i.e. 50gb. Nearly all games released thus far are nearly identically and in many cases the 360 has a slight edge. In time as developers gain experience with the PS3 hardware things may improve “slightly” but there’s not going to be some “ginormouss leap” from what’s out there now.It costs millions of £/$ to make games these days and devs need to release as many games a.s.a.p. to recoup their investments.

    I suppose if you say something often enough people will start to believe it.

    My advice is (for what it’s worth):-

    If you are a “very casual” gamer buy a Wii.

    If you like FPS and like playing with friends by a 360.

    If want a Blueray player that (coincidently plays a few games) buy a PS3.

    By the way I own all next gen consoles (including the Wii) so I’m being as objective as possible.

    @26
    28 said it all and I compared some games with my buddy who’s got Ps3 and his seemed like just brighter and there were no other differences and in some cases I’ve heard 360 has a better graphics too.
    @24
    where I bought mine,pretty much every 360 was chipped and it was part of the deal :-D
    I don’t know which mod they use
    I bought it from IRAN :-D it was cheaper too

    one more thing,
    now after playing with 360,you dont even wanna touch your ps2
    that is sad for poor ps2 boy :-) )
