US broadband will reach maximum capacity in 2010

Nemertes Research recently predicted that the broadband infrastructure in the United States will reach maximum capacity by 2010. The study says that the system will collapse because of this overload, but, more importantly, says the situation is inevitable unless there is a 60 to 70 percent increase in investment in broadband infrastructure. The report, titled, The Internet Singularity, Delayed: Why Limits in Internet Capacity Will Stifle Innovation on the Web, says that, although the dynamic nature of the Internet will prevent a total breakdown, users will experience “Internet brownouts,” which are defined as periods of low connectivity speeds. According to Nemertes Research, the situation will definitely hurt innovation on the Internet — a lack of reliability of connection speeds, will likely mean another Google orYouTube will have difficulty making inroads.

The study points out that the lack of investment could be holding back the time at which the internet reaches a ‘singularity’ (a point at which accelerating change creates an unpredictable outcome, such as the Internet becoming independently sentient). Nemertes Research expects the corporate and personal demand for Internet connectivity to grow exponentially during the next two years. Nemertes estimates that the financial investment required by access providers to bridge the gap between demand and capacity ranges from $42 billion to $55 billion, or roughly 60-70 percent more than service providers currently plan to invest. Damn, may be it’s a good time to start talking about this issue - or ban every YouTube-like website. :)

Hehe, im pro banning at least 95% of whats on youtube :D

But seriously filesharing is a much bigger bandwith hog.

The will probably “solve” this problem by upping the prices for your connection so expect to start paying more for your gigabytes!

If they have to choose to ban something, it’ll definetly be p2ps rather than YouTube-like websites…

THE END OF THE WORLD IS NIGH! REPENT!
Seriously though, not likely to happen.
The isp’s will limit bandwidth from certain users (maybe lie like myself who dl’s stuff and never watches them=) or invest lots. They are in it to make money. Therefore, they would make less money if the net did not work so there is no problem in sight.
Were the lines owned by the gov’t, then there would be problems.

Although there’s little doubt that the US internet infrastructure is aging, if not already to be considered ancient, this research sounds rather dubious considering that the object is to point out that limits to broadband infrastructure could be holding out a possible “singularity,” which by definition is unpredictable. How can you ascertain if something is being held back if there is no means of defining its occurrence?

I am more excited to know when “‘singularity’ (a point at which accelerating change creates an unpredictable outcome, such as the Internet becoming independently sentient).” occures. Does this mean the terminators will soon use our bodys as batteries to fuel their matrix?
Cant wait to have a metal rod jamed into my skull.

    Here’s the plan..

The powers that be, are planning to destablize the current internet in efforts to push a new internet.. And internet 2 if you will.. This new internet will be controlled, censored and propagandanized.

This should happen right about the time the constitution is halted, and north american union announced..

YES, conspiracy talk right here on rlslog!!! :)

    For those that are interested:

“P2P is still producing more traffic in the Internet then all other applications combined. Its average proportion during the measurement period (August, September 2007) regionally varies between 49% in the Middle East and 83% in Eastern Europe.”

An overview of the study taken by a german company can be viewed here:
    http://www.ipoque.de/media/internet_studies/internet_study_2007

Its not covering the US in particular - but I believe it to be similar.

If you go and do some searching around, there are several articles debunking this claim that the internet is going to slow down by 2010. The study was hosted and created by the people who would benefit from government subsidies, if they were to ‘rebuild’ the internet! AT& T, Level 3 and Corning (fiber optics) paid for this study…they would stand to make trillions from the government and then subsequently the higher cost of access to the consumer. Here is one of the links: http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2007/11/26/internet-capacity-alarmism

    November 28th, 2007 | 19:45

Seriously, you think sites like YouTube use the most bandwidth? PLEASE…a site like microsoft uses more than Youtube ever will ! The point here is that many people are beginning to get broadband and there are not enough lines or bandwidth for everyone by the year 2010. If your goal is to ban every site like youtube to try and solve this problem why don’t you also look at just cutting off everyone who doesn’t have broadband by 2010 and only the people that do will have it from there on out…yeah thats so possible too…

BTW. I hate Martin just as much as yall :)

    American think with invading countries
    no good
unless its liberating really bad ones like north korea (never been there but I believe the documentaries)
On tv there was this american president-hopeful who actually said americans should go back to the law thing from previous generations (instead of prison camps with no law) I would hope his ideas (were it true or not) would catch on.
At least the rest of the world never had that law thing. Maybe had but never heard of that myself (/from europe)

    November 28th, 2007 | 21:41

Ok so this is not going to happen since most DSL “brown outs” are caused by EMI (make an aluminum box for the modem) and the biggest crap is think of this as y2k1 i mean they should have atleast waited to 2020 and then said y2k2 and we could have had crazy little robot idiots to help us in our time of curling up in a little ball and crying over the internet…

basically 2010 I see a North American Wide Wireless network to solve the problem and maybe I lot more lag across the Atlantic, and if we cant do this we will sell Hawaii to the Asians.

If they would just make fiber optics a standard in broadband, we would not only get extremely faster speeds, but get those speeds for a very cheap price.

As for the “internet becoming independently sentient”, these people have no idea what they are talking about…Next, they are going to start saying Area 51 is the central hub for the entire internet, and that some higher thinking computer program has joined bodies with a cybernetic human to control the world…When will they learn?

We may not be the worst, but the lack of investment in infrastructure is because the telcos and cable providers don’t want to spend the money and cut into their profits and have a complete monopoly on the market effectively keeping everyone else from joining the game and competing with them to force them to increase bandwidth limits with new technologies.

  60. atlas
    November 29th, 2007 | 03:44

the article is old.. i read it on slashdot almost 4 days ago. And this is a crap assumption. In the 1990’s the telcos laid down tons of fiber, of which only a fraction is used today. They just have to dig it up, but it is more profitable to strangle your internet connection and share in the profits round-robin. Bastards.

considering that p2p is throttled to hell, isp’s imposing tiny caps on massive 10mbit cable connections, I doubt max capacity will ever be reached. FIOS is worthless if it is not widely used by everyone.
