Good news for linux/Ubuntu users here. Today is released newest version of this popular linux distribution - v7.10 (codename Gutsy Gibbon). I use it personally on my own PC (dual boot with WinXP), and i can recommend it to anyone. No matter if you’re newbie in linux world, or linux geek, give it a try. I had Ubuntu installed before, but it was lots a hassle of getting it dualboot and to install drivers to get my WLan working… so, I kept true to XP (Pimped Out of course). Is there any improvement on this release, or is the original Linux better? Cause Im pretty openminded towards new OS tryouts
I might try it out. How to make it dual boot? Just throw it in on boot, install it, and it’ll ask if i want to dual boot?
Currently running vista - no flame war please - runs “okay”, few problems with stability on programs, but nothing big.

This version is fantastic, it has automatically detected my 3Com USB stick, which previous version did not do! It is SO fast, smooth, slick and neat. The only reason I didn’t leave XP for Ubuntu last time was because of my usb wireless stick, but this time I will try to make the big step to Ubuntu/linux… I don’t play computer games anymore so there is no need for XP for me.

Ive always fancied giving one of these Iso’s a shot. But the reason I think people find them so slick, fast and the rest is that there is feck all to them and you dont play games or anything with it. So its bound to feel good isnt it ?

i used gutsy command line install, then slapped fluxbox on.
ultimate barebone system.
I tried this and found it to be a major bummer! Once installed on my pent lV laptop which is set up with a linsky’s wireless-G notebook adapter, ubuntu wouldn’t recognize it for internet connection.
Ubuntu forums was no help saying downloading certain plug-in would work but no avail.
Found on those forums that the internet connectivity is a huge issue.
Now the best part: When I tried to reinstall win 98 (restoration 3 disk set that came with my laptop) ubuntu left a nasty item behind called grub, which wouldn’t let me boot to win 98 after the install.
If you don’t plan on using your computer on the net, ubuntu is great, but updates and downloading linux apps are out.
Otherwise, run away from this, if you’re a non-techie like me.

most wireless drivers arn’t opensource soo you need the restriced kernel patch;
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get linux-restricted-modules
Apart from being relatively virus free… This has nothing else to offer. Most people who have this installed, just want something that simply isn’t what everyone else has.
As i said about Vista, “Ill stick with xp”
linux can be anything u want it to be, nothing more, nothing less.
Is a kernel-update also possible? Don’t want to install the whole linux, have already feisty installed…

I finally obtained a copy of xp sp2 and got in installed and the nasty grub went away.
I really would like to learn more about linux ( I have a newish iMac intel machine) but won’t go near ubuntu again.

if u want ubuntu with loads of apps install this, but if you just want a maintained repo, amazing speeds, low memory uage (fully loaded gui from boot usage is 32mb) install the command line, then build your own system to work however you need.

That is a definite no. Until game developers start creating Linux versions of their games, Windows will be a necessity for playing them. Just another reason not to even bother with Linux. Thanks for your time. And your money.

I think it’s great. It’s on my fastest PC. AMD Duron 900, 512MB SDram PC133 8MB onboard gfx. Very happy with it. Recognised all components on old Shuttle brand mobo. Work’s a treat. May your God go with you.
I prefer Fedora or OpenSuse.
Anyway if you want freedom a private life and fun, go for Linux !
as much as i’ve always wanted to switch to linux, its a waste of time. really it is. its for people who go on about how much ram they have or how cool their watercooling setup is or whatever, its not that great at all.
lol i find it funny people that can complain about an operating system that has less flaws than Xp. Many of you are too lazy to learn a new operating system or have never tried anything else besides Windows. I cant blame you because windows was pushed down many of our throats but you can try this. Sure, there is a learning curve but that is made up for by not worrying about viruses and system crashes. I would definitely recommend this OS to everyone.
I am also very shocked that some of you are having driver support because most drivers also come with a linux version.
if anyone is brave enough to try linux then definitely get Beryl once you understand how to install apps.

Where does one go to learn a new OS? I’ve got books, and the desire. The OS was OK except for the ability to do internet, without any easy methods of fixing that problem.
In my search to make it work, I found a page which showed which wireless adapters would work, which wouldn’t, and which might. The chipset or whatever they call it was a maybe on the list, but in reality a not.
I’ve been doing windoze since 3.2 and admit to being accustomed to doing it the easy way, but as far as being lazy, I wonder.
And again, where does one go to learn a new OS? All of the tutorials and books I’ve seen are of a language that implies that you are anything but a beginner at linux,unix etc.

AFAIK, Gutsy Gibbon already installs Compiz for you if it detects a decent video card.

Just a note - you can boot from the DVD and either choose to install or just run. If you just run, you can play with Ubuntu without it doing anything to your hard drive.
That about sums it up. You will struggle forever to get it working. And then you will wonder what all the fuss was about and go back to XP.
Its like a nice version of Windowsblinds, does fOOk all, but looks nice.

each to there own, if you have the time to invest, and want to learn new things, and the core of how your system works linux is it, if your happy with windows keep with it.
btw ubuntu is not an OS its a Linux distribution based on debian build on unix. Linux itself is just kernel that can fit on a floppy disk.

but the majority of people looking for software at rlslog are looking for a
one click solution…not the typical linux user
i dont think people really know what they are trying with a dual-boot
system,most of the times things will get wrong and you need to know

Why dont we just wait for Windows Vienna… its build from scratch to compete with the Linux system. Because its build as new instead of bloating XP -> Vista it will be much more stable and faster. We just got to wait it out ya know. Oh, and it wont be compatible with any other previous ware… so we might be better off with a free Linux (Ubuntu, Fedora, SUSE, Mandriva) after all… hurm. Anyways, I guess I need to re-organise my laptop pretty soon anyways, so I might as well give uBuntu another try ey

My install was not a dual boot, I did a full install. The lap is a 40 gig hd with 512 ram. Figured a dual boot would slow the resources. Was this an error on my parc concerning connectivity?
Would fedora work for me, in the connectivity department? Assuming I did a dual boot install?

Being just one of the many Debian clones, they should really show more respect for the real Debian crew though… (they don’t even mention Debian on their main page).

Been rolling on Gusty since the BETA went live, had a coup[e of wierd issues with my USB ports, then everything sorted itself out. Compiz fusion &beryl make the desktop look stunning, now I’m just waiting for UT3 to hit the shelves.

MP3 is supported in most distros (including Debian) from the box and those encoders obviously are Free/Open Software. Best example is Lame(GPL’d):

I think one of the main problems people have with linux is the double edged sword of (near) absolute control of every single hardware component and what drivers should be using it.
Personally I’m loving it, although sure at times it *can* be frustrating, the possibilities far outweighs the moments of frustration.
I began with running linux on my server, after a while I also switched to it on my htpc, and in the end I couldn’t resist running it on my main/gaming machine, although I do have dualboot for the purpose of occasional gaming.

Linux was such a hugeeee waste of my time, I remember when i downloaded fedora, ubuntu and opensuse. It looked great on the Internet pictures, but when working with them, man did it waste my time. Learning how to install software took a while and still to this day I got no clue. Linux can’t run games and no freedom of being able to try new programs, because of Microsoft ruling the PC market. I would like to try os x, but those f0ckers want me to buy a system of theirs instaed of me being able to build my ownwith my chosen specs. Anyway, I use Vista and I love it, I like the look of Ubuntu also but not wasting my time using it. Well gotta poop really hard, red stuff comes out my butt!

Nice, but… as engineer (mechanical) does not giving me compatibility with applications which I use at work. For example I need autodesk Autocad and Inventor, MS Office, and some other specialized applications for planning and purchasing purposes which only work on Windows XP. It is very hard to be part of Linux World if your daily job depend on Windows applications and as a worker I’m not able to use Linux. I do have it installed at home on one old laptop but have no use of Linux and that’s the biggest issue for many users. So, I guess first companies, corporations, government will need to switch to Linux, so then all of us can do it because they will ask from us to learn it. Until then Linux will be just a hobby, unfortunately.

Last release I thought I’d give ubuntu a try on one of my spare pc’s. I asked a few ?’s and got shafted by “advanced” Linux users and was called a noob.
I also noticed other beginners being shunned for asking ?’s. Now I have this persona that all ubuntu users are snobs and b**ches. If you all are trying to push this thing above microsoft how about helping the noobs and encouraging growth. Try to help your community grow and drop your “holier than thou” frame of mind.

also have ubuntu installed as dual boot. but i never use it. it takes too much time to get everything working. have problems with the display, open office fonts really look bad, i get a headache.
if only adobe appz were available for linux. then it would be worth the effort.

I am also using CAD (in school) using autoCAD as ADT and autoCAD fin, MagiCAD and CADS. i find it amusing you cant get CAD working on linux, took me roughly 20 seconds to get it working after installation and on top of that, nothing special tricks were needed. and yes this was done for Ubuntu. Also open office suffices more than enough to replace the crappy MS office apps. i still have XP on my home PC and i like it to be on my home PC for gaming, but when it comes to working. Linux is the way to go.
And for those who keep ranting about windows beeing ruling the market, yes its ruling the market on home PC’s but the fact is. most of the companies/factories/shops etc. etc. use Linux distros instead of windows OS’s. Why? 2 simple reasons. they are as easy to use and they require less computing power to maintain the OS stable leaving more free for the tasks needed to do the actual work, plus they cost less. here are few examples of the parties who use linux: Volvo, Peugeot, Swiss Air, Verkkokauppa.com(store/net store and cash registry) Valmet/Valtra, Sony BGM, and plenty of others. also some statistics: over 60% of companies worldwide use windows based programs in offices/cubicles and linux in the task processing such as production lines etc. out of that 60% nearly half report moving over to linux based desktops in offices during the next 5 years. out of the remaining 40% who rely on solely windows about a quarter reports moving to using linux besides windows in the same manner as the previous group for monetary reasons/efficiency reasons in the next 10 years. so yes windows rules now, but the fact is linux is taking over due to its compatibility and adaptivity and stability and efficiency and thats COLD HARD STATISTICS!

if your having so much difficulty reading and installing programs in Ubuntu, this might be the way to go for you.elmost every program under the sun is preloaded on dvd, about 2 gig, you can install it to hdd and off you go. it is 2 gig compressed and about 8 gig expanded.

Ubuntu is reasonable, and does look pretty nice, but as with other nix`s the learning curve is pretty steep.
..works well on my ps3 though and means i can play all the filetypes on it that i ant to that sony havent implemented yet, BUT as other folk have mentioned it does suffer from a lack of software for specialised uses, as a music producer i find vst aps and the like severley hard to get hold of..
..other than that for use on servers and other similar uses, workstations, etc it does the job admirably.
i have Xp Pro sp2 and Vista Ultimate in Dual boot can i still use ubuntu as a third choice os ???

yes u can cause it will install grub on your particion and will automatic make the 3 choices of boot(if not u can still make it once u installed ubuntu)

NO you cannot install Office 2003 natively but you can do do so using WINE which is a linux windows emulator, but you don’t need Office when you can use Open Office! It’s great and reads Office files and such you have nothing to lose…and you CAN dual boot. It’s simple. Good luck.
All you windows pussies complaining about linux sucks.. ever hear of WHINE it is a windows emulator and it allows you to run most any of the windows games, plus if you REALLY can’t uderstand that get a virtual machine program and run windows out of linux unlike windows allows you. Linux has far more effects with gusty is overall much more stable and easy to use.
