Ubuntu is slow, much slower than Windows on the same computer. Applications such as Firefox are slower to launch. Microsoft will fix Vista’s problems as time goes on, but there’s no guarantees of anything with Ubuntu Linux, which is why people still use Vista anyway. Linux is the operating system you can’t even GIVE away.

I believe in an open market place(and free software for home users) and too long has microsoft monopilized the O.S’s market with the help of manufacturers!

I really liked the option where one can install it within windows like a virtual machine. It took no more than half an hour! Typing from ubuntu now! I will play with it a little while to see how it goes.

Nice release from Canonical wrapping up some good stuff going around opensource software, Ubuntu along with Fedora spearheads the Linux Desktop program and they make a damn fine job at it with fast release cycles and continually improving quality testing, Linux is here to stay and inevitably will dominate sooner or later.

I like ubuntu but I don’t agree that it uses little system resources. It is not bloated like Vista but it is much more bloated than XP. It uses more memory and CPU than Xp. When idle Xp CPU usage is 0-2%, in ubuntu 20-35% at my 2GHz P4. Ubuntu has a slow startup time and it looks ugly at smaller resolutions like 1024×768. Ubuntu team should concentrate on speed, preformance and make it as lite as possible if they want to take over the world. Windows 7 is going to be even liter and faster than XP!

Vista is only slow if you have it on an older computer. That is like saying XP is slow on a 100mhz pentium. No Sh!t it’s gonna be slow. Any new computer, Vista will actually be faster than XP on the same computer, I know from experience. And I have ubuntu for my laptop and it runs great, But If installed vista on the laptop it would run horrible, because its a five year old laptop. However, on my dual core with 2GB ram, Vista blows away XP or ubuntu when it comes to performance, speed, and program usability. I had XP instaled on the same computer, and everything ran at about half the speed of vista, same with ubuntu Gutsy Gibons.

How people can like Windows Vista? Because is pretty? OMG… Vista is like XP but with terrible performance, super resources hunger and hyper expensive. How could be a good SO if take a lot of resouces from the start and from the former SO? Vista was bad programmed!! With the wages that Microsoft pays to their programmers I could make a better programs with the half of it!!
Vista is a WindosXP as Millenium was to Win98.

With the nowadays system and WinXP, your PC will fly.

Soap, you may notice that i go into great detail in my comments. I do this assuming that the person who finds it useful will know nothing about *nix, or even computing in general.

let’s expand. You forgot “Find .exe”.
case: “I am looking for software that does “x”"
1)go to google & type in the type of software such as “word processor”
2) get hundreds of results: some paid, some free, some fake, some with malware. You then have to read about them, review them, download them, make sure that they do not contain viruses.
3) “Vista = Download .exe, open .exe.”
4) look for te icon on the desktop or start>programs.

With ubuntu if I were to tell someone who already knew what they were doing where to get something, I would just say

“it’s in the repos”

For all your troubles, I once again recommend to visit the ubuntu irc channel.

speed: ubuntu has been proven to be less resource hungry than Vista. Quite a few people will laugh at you for saying that,” btw

if you want a harcore numbercrunching OS, there are dozens of other linux distros that will allow you to set up things like parallell network processing.

last: I never said ubuntu was easier. “easy” is subjective. I have never used a Mac before, but everyone says that they are uber friendly. So I went to a computer store to try out the interface to see how quickly I would figure out how to do simple and complex tasks. To make a long story short(er), I was utterly confused and it me a long time to find settings(despite plenty of experience on a dozen OS’s. Funny enough, once I found a terminal i felt more at home, both nix* and mac run the Bourne Again Shell(BASH).

finally: about :10 steps in command line is actually 2: copy & paste
