Releaselog

Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron…. free

Today is April 24th, and you may ask, what significance does that have? Well, today is the anticipated release date of Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. As is customary for Linux distributions, Ubuntu 8.04 includes incremental updates to many of the software packages that make up the system, from low-level details like the window manager and graphics subsystem, all the way up to the bundled OpenOffice.org productivity suite.

The new release is also the first to ship with the Firefox 3.0 browser, which is currently still in late-stage beta testing. This is widely touted as the savior of Linux, as it will bring Linux to the masses. I tried some of the earlier versions a few years ago, when I was building a tv tuner system, but opted for a Windows based machine. Nonetheless, if you aren’t a Linux fanboy, you might want to give this distribution a shot. It is free to download, or you can request a copy be mailed to your physical address.

Ubuntu is great if your not well versed in linux. It’s very easy to install and use. It’s a great distro and great way to learn linux without having to dive headfirst into command line stuff.

Great stuff… gotta get a copy mailed, though; my compy that has the burner is currently crapped out.

Not much I can do about that atm, not much money in pocket either.

This’ll be good for my laptop

The linux world is in deep need of a good usenet downloader.
I tried ubuntu 3 months ago and went to vista just because there was no equivalent to altbinz & newzleecher =(

Don’t be fooled by linux fans who are ready to lie just because they want you to try this OS (which is great btw).
Pan & klibido are really poor applications when it come to download binaries. They’re only good for text.

Other than that, i was very surprised to see how much ubuntu 7.10 (gnome as desktop with unused tasks disabled as startup) was ressource hungry. On an athlon 3100+ with 1GB and geforce 7600, vista runs actually smoother & faster, i’m gonna get bash by a lot of fanboys but just try and see for yourself.

The application download system is, however, fantastic, i must say it was hard coming back to windows after using for a few days.

and please nobody say to use wine for altbinz, the interface becomes incredibly ugly, which is not appreciated for an app used everyday.

    Sorry for bad english

I’ve been using Ubuntu for about 7 months now, and I can tell you that once you get past the growing pains of a linux os, you’ll never look back to Micro$oft. Ubuntu is relatively safe from malware and viruses which is why I use. I have a virtualbox that runs xp for those few applications that I can only run on windows.

Try it out, play with it, you’ll be glad you did.

Pedr0 i have to agree with you that its mostly for fanboys like myself, i also agree with you that wine is very crappy and isnt as good as a normal windows boot.
But damn if you use your computer for internet/mp3/movies/torrents this operating system is the one for you! It uses very little system resources! Its very sexy way more beautiful than vista (ofc after some easy changes). Anyway i just want you people to try it out make it a double boot anything just try to learn this OS cause its freakin awesome!

    @Deathclaw: yes i dare say it :p

It’s just that i noticed applications like opera & firefox did take ~2 seconds to startup and filemanager wasn’t really “fast as lightning” so it was slightly disappointing.
Anyway, now i got a dual core and 3gigs of ram so i would certainly not have the same problem…

back to my point, i hope that a good dev will decide to program a good usenet downloader soon (or make the altbinz dev change his mind and port his app to linux), after this is done i’m sold =)

I would like to know how easy or “better” it is to install apps or drivers than xp or vista? I tried ubuntu fiesty fawn and to install just ati catalyst was a headache. I really wanted to get into Linux very badly. I wanted to love Linux. It just did not meet my expectations and I also tried suse and the other ones that at the moment I can’t remember their names. It sounds great of this new version, but been there n done that n its not my cup of tea.

pedr0: i assume you use nzb files. I am a heavy usenet user and run ubuntu. I found a commandline project calle nzbget and compiled it no problem (for 7.10, should work for 8.04 as well). its at http://sourceforge.net/projects/nzbget/

install, edit the /etc/nzbget.conf file to your liking and then have ubuntu open .nzb files with the command
“$ xterm -e nzbget” from Firefox, when it asks you what to open with, type in “/usr/bin/gnome-open” (gnome-open means use gnome associations, saves a bit of time)

some cool stuff about it: it accurately tells you the size of the download, it uses up about 3% CPU (as opposed to klibido), and it will only download par2 files if the other files are detected to be broken( and will download only as many par2 files as it takes, genious!)

When the ubuntu repositories don’t hve what you want, hit up freshmeat or sourceforge.

btw, i HATE newzbin, newsleecher, alt.binz and all those annoying windows clients. utter trash.

    @42 Big Arfi
looks like i’ll be answering people’s questions for a while.

restricted drivers are stupidly easy to install now. you just go to System>Administration>Restricted Drivers Manager

checkmark NvIdia or ATI or whatever driver pops up and hit “apply”. restart. will also have wifi drivers, sound card drivers, and anything else that is closed source but necessary to get your hardware running.

Adobe products work with wine very well now. In fact, better integration with wine was a Google Summer of Code project that came out last summer. I know quite a few professional photographers who have completely ditched M$ and aren’t looking back.

Spent about 5 hours following guides and tutorials just to get my mouse (mx610) working properly on ubuntu 7.10 and it STILL didnt work. Then another couple of hours trying to get the audio player to play mp3’s. Didnt work. If that is what you call user friendly then i’d hate to see something “user UNfriendly”. This thing suxx. period.

  47. Atlas
    April 25th, 2008 | 04:07

    @46 and all ubuntu noobies.

http://www.getautomatix.com/ is a .deb (more or less the equivalent of a .msi installer file) that will do things such as expand your repositories, install all codecs (such as win32 codecs & mp3 playback etc) enable commercial dvd playback, give you truetype fonts and install the flash plugin into firefox. (has tons more apps) it takes about 1 minute to download and install and 2 mins using the friendly interface to make your system usable in under 5 mins total.

this should be the first thing you get once you install ubuntu. (8.04 version is not up yet, give it 2 days)

people, make sure to visit irc.freenode.org #ubuntu. They will fix your probs and do your dishes.

Finally, for anyone used to Windows or Mac, LINUX IS NOT THEM! It annoys the hell out of me when someone who has been using windows their entire life calls linux garbage, thinking that they know jack sh*t about anything. ALL YOUR ASSUMPTIONS ARE FAIL.

*polite tone* for example, with ubuntu, you do not go to “download.com” and download program “x.” you can (from easy to hard)
    1) applications>add/remove programs (this is a catelogue of what you have, as well as hundreds of things you can download. its searchable and easy to use)
    2) system>administration>synaptic package manager (heavy duty app management GUI that will give you much more complete access to the 30,000 + packages in the ubuntu/debian repositories.
3a) (command line) apt-cache search torrent client
    3b) sudo apt-get install ktorrent

excellent, utorrent-like clients: ktorrent, deluge, qbittorrent. (azureus is java which is cross platform, its also in the repositories but it is a resource hog)

I hope my long-ass message will convert a few people.

    April 25th, 2008 | 04:31

oops. turns out the automatix2 project is dead. its actually easier now.

to enable repositories (generic software install step, only needs to be done once):
    open System>Settings>Synaptic Package Manager’
go to tools> repositories. enable all repos except source code (especially multiverse)
    hit “reload”

    to install:
search for “ubuntu-restricted-extras” and install it
    -OR-
Close synaptic, open a terminal and type in “sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras”

    done.

this may sound complicated but following these instructions will get you up and running in 2 mins tops.

  50. XtraP
    April 25th, 2008 | 06:21

@46 and if anyone else is having problems, they do have good instructions on their forums.
49 Atlas told the most important already. Some of the other distros have the sound/video codecs and players included, they really should make a download of ubuntu too with those included.

One thing to remember about Linux, is that is is free. And yes, it use to be even more HIGHLY user UNfriendly. Command line is very much case sensitive. The OS relies upon the community, and it is really for people that want to get into their OS, not for someone that wants to click on control panel and be done. I have never heard of someone spending 6 hours on a mouse… it has native support now, yet regardless of the driver, once you get it running… that is an accomplishment. It is a hackers OS, very simply. You have to make sure you have the right hardware to prevent headaches…. yet when you don’t, well it is fun as hell to go NDISWRAP a driver. If you don’t want to have to go muckin about with your OS, then don’t download it. If you expect a free OS to work out of the box 100% of the time with any hardware manufacturer, well, you’re pretty funny. And if you want Ubuntu, but you don’t want to be bothered with learning how to use it, go buy a Dell with Ubuntu pre-installed.

As far as games, and all the precious windows apps. This applies to both Linux & Mac. Their ARE alternative programs, don’t have to use WINE, WINE sucks. If you want photoshop, use GIMP. GIMP rocks! If you want Office.. use OpenOffice. The great thing about Linux, is you can find any program to to anything. Someone, somewhere has been in your shoes and had to write it, that is “Linux” and “GNU”. Sp it might not be your fancy windows app, and it might not look all that pretty, but it will get the job done, probably better. If you HAVE to run windows apps, then stay with Windows. If you HAVE to game, go get a console, or dual boot.

    LOL @ 47

You see, that is what I hate about linux. People like you claim its so user friendly and works right away, but then to simply install something you have to post a whole page of instructions, and the STILL claim its easier than windows. Vista = Download .exe, open .exe. Linux = trolling forums for an hour just to get your mouse to work correctly, and then going through 10 steps in command line to (hopefully) get it to work. Also, when I had Ubuntu GG installed on my desktop, vista was actually faster in every area, from startup times to opening/running memory intensive programs.

Thanks to those who recommended hellanzb! I just configured it, and now it works wonderfully. I just download an nzb to my desktop, and hellanzb does all the processing. Afterwards, the completely processed release is in my home folder. Much easier than using pan/par2/unrar independently.

  58. Atlas
    April 25th, 2008 | 16:56

    @56

Soap, you may notice that i go into great detail in my comments. I do this assuming that the person who finds it useful will know nothing about *nix, or even computing in general.

“Vista = Download .exe, open .exe.”

let’s expand. You forgot “Find .exe”.
case: “I am looking for software that does “x”"
1)go to google & type in the type of software such as “word processor”
    2) get hundreds of results: some paid, some free, some fake, some with malware. You then have to read about them, review them, download them, make sure that they do not contain viruses.
    3) “Vista = Download .exe, open .exe.”
    4) look for te icon on the desktop or start>programs.

With ubuntu if I were to tell someone who already knew what they were doing where to get something, I would just say

    “it’s in the repos”

For all your troubles, I once again recommend to visit the ubuntu irc channel.

speed: ubuntu has been proven to be less resource hungry than Vista. Quite a few people will laugh at you for saying that,” btw

if you want a harcore numbercrunching OS, there are dozens of other linux distros that will allow you to set up things like parallell network processing.

last: I never said ubuntu was easier. “easy” is subjective. I have never used a Mac before, but everyone says that they are uber friendly. So I went to a computer store to try out the interface to see how quickly I would figure out how to do simple and complex tasks. To make a long story short(er), I was utterly confused and it me a long time to find settings(despite plenty of experience on a dozen OS’s. Funny enough, once I found a terminal i felt more at home, both nix* and mac run the Bourne Again Shell(BASH).

finally: about :10 steps in command line is actually 2: copy & paste

    I’ll give this OS a try!! :D

How people can like Windows Vista? Because is pretty? OMG… Vista is like XP but with terrible performance, super resources hunger and hyper expensive. How could be a good SO if take a lot of resouces from the start and from the former SO? Vista was bad programmed!! With the wages that Microsoft pays to their programmers I could make a better programs with the half of it!! :D
Vista is a WindosXP as Millenium was to Win98.

With the nowadays system and WinXP, your PC will fly.

  61. Travis X
    April 25th, 2008 | 19:16

Vista is only slow if you have it on an older computer. That is like saying XP is slow on a 100mhz pentium. No Sh!t it’s gonna be slow. Any new computer, Vista will actually be faster than XP on the same computer, I know from experience. And I have ubuntu for my laptop and it runs great, But If installed vista on the laptop it would run horrible, because its a five year old laptop. However, on my dual core with 2GB ram, Vista blows away XP or ubuntu when it comes to performance, speed, and program usability. I had XP instaled on the same computer, and everything ran at about half the speed of vista, same with ubuntu Gutsy Gibons.

  62. luzif3r
    April 25th, 2008 | 21:26

you might disagree but for me windows IS free. and no vista hogs more resources than xp currently.

  63. Divine
    April 26th, 2008 | 12:21

I like ubuntu but I don’t agree that it uses little system resources. It is not bloated like Vista but it is much more bloated than XP. It uses more memory and CPU than Xp. When idle Xp CPU usage is 0-2%, in ubuntu 20-35% at my 2GHz P4. Ubuntu has a slow startup time and it looks ugly at smaller resolutions like 1024×768. Ubuntu team should concentrate on speed, preformance and make it as lite as possible if they want to take over the world. Windows 7 is going to be even liter and faster than XP!

Nice release from Canonical wrapping up some good stuff going around opensource software, Ubuntu along with Fedora spearheads the Linux Desktop program and they make a damn fine job at it with fast release cycles and continually improving quality testing, Linux is here to stay and inevitably will dominate sooner or later.

Ubuntu is slow, much slower than Windows on the same computer. Applications such as Firefox are slower to launch. Microsoft will fix Vista’s problems as time goes on, but there’s no guarantees of anything with Ubuntu Linux, which is why people still use Vista anyway. Linux is the operating system you can’t even GIVE away.
