Two poll results, new question
Many readers called us out on not updating the poll question too often. I’ve to admit, we didn’t pay much interest to it and rather left it running for 3 weeks already (and the very same time range happened with the last question). But it’s time to stop the voting, analyze the results and offer you a new question (check it in the right menu), this time hopefully for our standard 2-week period.

The first poll which took place in January analyzed the speed of yor internet connection at home. This is a particalury important and interesting research, as it usually directly goes with the amount of data you download. It’s also well known fact that although countries like Sweden or Japan often have 100 Mbit lines for residential customers, many other users are happy if they got a relatively slow DSL connection capped at 10 or 20 gigs a month. More than 23 000 unique voters answered this poll and most of them seem to have 1-4 Mbits at home, tightly followed by 5-10 Mbits. Faster connections are rather unusual. 1891 people responded with 100 Mbit or faster line, which is something I can only silently envy.
The second poll which ended just now was also pretty interesting. We asked you about the effect piracy had on you regarding the cinema visits. I wasn’t really sure which answer will be the most common, but it seems organizations like MPAA don’t have to worry that much (or their stupid stats are completely wrong): almost 50% respondents answered that they go to the cinema about the same as in the time when they didn’t download movies from the internet. The pros of the big screen are still obvious.

Just completed the recent poll earlier today and was glad to see the results and above commentary so quickly. Keep up the good work RlsLog!!! You peeps rock!
I pay 15.99 a month for dialup. What a great deal. I’m so cheap.
Yeaa, more polls ftw, seems like we had that last poll for months.
Surely Home Theater equipment is doing far more to cut cinema numbers than movie piracy. I guess the MPAA lawyers have to say something to justify their jobs.
amazing poll. must have used up all the braincells of the rlslog staff to come up with them.
next poll: since you got teh internetz, how has it affected your relationship with your girlfriend because of all te pr0n available for free?
choices:
1. my girlfriend doesnt allow me to watch porn, so i obey because i am a girly man.
2. i screw my girlfriend while watching porn i downloaded from teh internetz, uing her as a test object.
3. what girlfriend?
4. i dont have teh internetz yet, can i download it, rs links someone, pleeeze.
m, you’re an idiot. If you don’t like this site, don’t go here. It’s that simple.
How did “i go about the same win” get the most votes!?. There must be a lot of stupid people downloading.
@6, the joke’s on you.
@7, Your Mum:
actually some of us arent completely cheap bastards.
some of us still buy software and see movies, i know i do. the difference is i’ll download it first and if its worth the money to see it in the theatre or pay full price for the software i’ll pay for it.
lol @ m’s poll.
I like polls, I think the last one was nice.
…but the real reason I’m writing this is to notify you about the amount of spam here (for example)
http://www.rlslog.net/live-free-or-die-limited-dvdrip-xvid-saphire/
I only wanted to advise…I don’t know how you deal with this crap!
Sorry for the ot..btw, as always..NICE WORK!
Cheap. HA! I dl something because i want to enjoy it in my own home and/or don’t want to pay for it. It’s completely ret@rded to dl a movie and then go pay to see it, or vise versa. If you’re dling something first and then paying for it later, you’re ret@rded. It’s as simple as that.
That new poll should have at least one more option for over the 1TB mark. 1TB HDDs are common now and I guess the vast majority of users who are remotely PC enthusiasts already have more than 1TB total storage.
I don’t exactly consider I have that much storage and yet I have 2×500GB that I got within the last 9months and an older 320GB … I am not counting all the smaller HDDs that I accumulated over time that are still working and sitting in external enclosures just in case I need something from yesteryears
heh currently the new poll is a tie between 500-999GB and 1TB+
currently got 1.35TB in my main. Cant wait to see which one winds
~BW
In regards to the new poll, do we add up the total space of our drives, or just our biggest, because i have 4 hardrives…
From the latest pool the RIAA would probably make the following headline:
“15% STOPPED GOING TO CINEMA BECAUSE OF ILLEGAL DOWNLOADING”
And completely ignoring the other 15% who are going to the cinema more because of piracy.
I think they were talking about single drives, but that doesn’t really matter.
I have a 400 and a 500 running on this, 80 on the lappy and probably 1 tb in misc drives that are either ancient or ‘broken’ (but with data I want back, but am too lazy to recover just yet).
I voted 500-999 since I only counted what’s running right now.
The new pool asks in plural: “How huge are your drives?”
So counted my both hard drives.
1 mbit in brazil could be considered “good” connection, cus the highest is 8 mbit
c’mon, i know they both suck, if compared with japan or sweden =)
I quite like my 100MBit university connection as well, though I got a warning for transferring 240GB in one week.
wow for the first time portugal is in front of brazil. We have 30 Mb’s that’s a nice connection for portugal.
well i have 10/10 inet oh an atm i have about 5tb space running 1tb on this pc and 4tb on my ftp server pc thats running 24/7
Ok this is going to sound dumb but is the new poll referring our primary drive or the total size of all the drives in our machine or all drives in general including external hard-drives obviously excluding iPods?
Comeon guys 1TB+ is all you can think of? It should be at least 5TB+! I bought last week 2 1TB hardisks to backup my 2.5TB raid. When I count all my working HDDs over 100GB then I get over 7TB, thats about 6.5TiB useable diskspace!
go to the cinema pretty much the same but haven’t rented a movie in ages
got 100Mbit, with in a way in a problem, I never use more then 10 at the same time, take to have over 10 ms in games =/, I useally only use internet to game with others. Still looking for an apartment with work internet, 1TBit, mainly becasue I just want to test it. oooh yes im from Sweden.
I dont go to a cinima alot, mainly becasue all moves sucks nowardays, why do I know? I download and watch them. but those that are good, or if a friend what to go to a movie I dont mind doing so, yet it is still not lot. If I see a good movie I w8 untill it gets on DVD/blueray and buy it.
The new poll is nice, whatever I count my main computer or all of the others I still have more then 1 TB on the poll, most of it is emty space.
100 Mbit must be nice,I have 8 Mbit down and 400 Kbs up.
Nothing wrong with the DL speed but seeding sucks with my up speed.
I have a 40gb account i get 120gb every month so im getting 80gb for free a month so i dont care about speed im geeting free broadband yeh
I actually like watching big budget film the second time rather than the first because the special effects usually destract from the story. Dont watch comedies in cinema to noisy people tend to over laugth as if there obliged to because its a comedy.
Actually, there’s missing an answer:
“I go there more often, with my camera”
On the recent poll about the HDDs that people have I think it would also be interesting to see how many of us have HDD space in some higher numbers, 1-5TB and 5-10TB
nice one IVaN_000
You guys should’ve done an “Oscars predictions” poll
Since this site introduced me to Cake Mania 2, I never go to the cinema any more. I spend far too much time caking and baking.
i vote for m’s poll next
how much does it cost to have 100 mb/s DSL. like im getting ripped off for 3 mb for €66[ireland] with a 30gb limit download, you can get a max 8mb dsl for 3 times the cost tax not include,it must be unreal to have such speed 100mb/s im soooooooooooo jealous
Going to the theater is pointless, the people make it unbearable. I don’t want to hear laughter, I don’t want to hear kids making comments, I simply want to see the movie. When I do go I am reminded of why I stopped.
Cinema:0 in 5+ years
I’m with #37… I quit going long before I started downloading because it is an undesirable experience. Not to be racist but I cant watch movies with Africa Americans. The 2 of us in a theater just don’t work out. For some odd reason it always ends in a fight. I guess cause I’m the one white ex-banger that they don’t expect to blow on them in the middle of the movie. For some reason it alway ends up in police involvement….
Home Video:0 in 5+ years
I used to do the blockbuster/Chinese takeout thing to the tune of about $50 a week.. If anyone is missing my money for the past 5+ years it’s Blockbuster. The 50inch screen and the surround sound make it a way better experience then Cinema anyway.
Games:0 in 5+ years
Oh and the games, forget about it. They have lost so much off of my sales. It’s not even funny. First it was lime wire and now the torrents. If they shut it down, we’ll just move on to the next thing…lol
Music:0 in 5+ years
I for one say F%$K the artist. After they get their pockets fat $ they produce total crap anyway. You buy a CD and 1 out of 20 songs are ok. The rest is garbage. So maybe if they made less $ they will stay hungry and put out better music.
Software:0 ever…
I can say without a doubt that I have never paid for 1 single piece of software ever…. In 10 years on the net.. It was the first thing I learned about the net.
It’s like I always say… “There’s all this awesome stuff floating around on the net, you just have to know how to grab it!!!!!!”
Oh and thanks to sites like this… You have made my job locating the latest downloads a breeze!!!!!!
Thanks rlslog!!!!!!!!!
I’m assuming the new poll refers to individual drives, rather than how much HD space *total* you have.
This new poll is missing something. Many of us burn our stuff onto DVD. I have close to 1000 DVD so that would be 4TB of crap.
I’m living in Greece where internet was until last summer way to slow, but private companies (with problems at the beginning) brought 24MBS lines (well you see most 18 in downloading), but i guess it was a huge step to have for example a 700mb movie in less than 10 mins. And we pay for this and unlimited local or international calls less than 40Euros. I guess thats good for the moment.
As for the big screen i would go there if there is a movie that is good enough to see it there say for example… Indiana Jones , i wouldn’t like to wait a bad camera or later a mediocre R5..
@spacebucket1000
I pay ~50 USD or ~35 Euro, in Sweden it is 320 kr, some time ago they wanted to changed so I had downloading limit but I refursed, I would get it cheaper then.
@spacebucket1000: For me the cost for 100/100 is about $43-44 or 29€ (274 SEK), roughly the same as Ypsilon. That’s with unlimited bandwith, limited would be cheaper but pretty useless. This is all thanks to it being fiber, instead of DSL/Cable. Those services are much more expensive in comparison even here.
I hope your ISP comes to it’s senses and starts offering better plans or at least remove the limit.
Wouldn’t count on it though.
They are probably to conservative.
I have requested this before, and I will ask again. Could you at least reorder the poll in terms of votes either in ascending or descending order. It makes it more easier to digest the data at a glance. Thanks.
Here in Belgium 99% of the providers ask 40€ (thats roughly 55$) for a 4 Mbit connection with 256kbs upload and a downloadlimit of 20 Gb
Providers suck here…
Couldn’t have said it better myself MarkJG.
@37
Exactly. Should have had “I stopped going to the cinema ages ago because people can’t STFU for an hour and a half” as an option.
true i go to the cinema about the same
but i wont go and rent a video
here its 80 $ for 12mb download 1mbit upload LIMITED 100gb download/uplaod like 50gb uplaod + 50gb downlaod Oo
@blunden , SADLY YOUR RIGHT THERES NO HOPE FOR IRELAND IN GENERAL for a long…………..long while , its nothing new that we have to pay for a low speed - high cost broadband service its just the norm thanks to eircoms{isp} monopoly on the market/infrastructure ,but when you here of such high speeds being lanched in other countrys its a kick in the balls …… kick …kick …kick
Here in Germany looks kinda better than other places. I pay 45€for 16/1 Mgb download/upload. and there’s even kable companies that offer 32Mgb for 55€ or something. Sorry for those with expensive connection, monopoly sucks
@4 You nailed it right on the head. With the advent of 60″ plasmas and home projection screens theres no need for the cinemas. It used to be a fun night out years ago but it’s pointless now. Maybe its fun for the teeny boppers on a Friday night but thats about as far as it goes. Who wouldn’t prefer sitting in their Lazy-Boy recliner watching their personal Hi-Def projection screen with their full HD surround sound system as opposed to a crap audio/video setup at the theater?
Not only that, you get the luxury of paying $10 for a soda, having people talk through the entire movie, sitting in soda and stepping in gum, and having the tallest person on earth sit in front of you at the theater. Theaters are going the way of the dinosaur.
