TV on the Radio – Dear Science (2008)

Eclectic Indie Rockers are back with their follow up to 2006’s excellent Return to Cookie Mountain, with Dear Science.  Although this has been floating around as a P2P release for a while, one time scene group TVONTHERADiO was able to pre it a week before it hits store shelves.  Although I haven’t listened to it yet, I’m a fan in general of these guys and as thus, recommend it.

TV on the Radio (often abbreviated to TVOTR) is a New York City indie rock band formed in 2001 whose music spans genres as diverse as free jazz, a cappella/doo-wop, soul, shoegaze and electro. The group has released several EPs including their debut Young Liars (2003), and two acclaimed albums, 2004’s Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes and their most recent, Return to Cookie Mountain (2006), which received wider notice and appeared near the top of several end-of-year lists. Rolling Stone magazine voted it the fourth best album of the year, and Spin voted the band as 2006 Artist of the Year.

    Thanks, CB.

Finally… Sometimes the silly adherence to “scene only” ups keeps quality releases away longer. What does that really say about the “scene”, then, when a “one time scene group” is what it takes to get music of this high caliber to our ears, while we are constantly bombarded by mainly crap releases that not too many people really want or need? Oh well, at least it’s finally here.

Anyway, dig Family Tree. It’s an amazing song, and this album is the deepest thing they’ve done to date. Live these dudes are nothing short of amazing. Sitek’s sonic attack mesmerizes, while Malone and Adebimpe weave sometimes dark (always hopeful) lyrical masterpieces that will have you singing along. Saw them (my 9th time since early ‘04) on the second night of the current tour, and they’re better than ever. They are, imo, the best live band in the U.S. right now.

Best album put out during 2008 so far. Not one track on this album is weak at all. Family Tree always gets to me. :’)

Yeah, the 82mb files are all corrupt. Can someone please repack and post?

I’m with you TVOTR Fan. This is the record of the year by a stretch. But then I’m slightly biased (in favor of music with integrity).

Without question, these guys are one of the few acts keeping the integrity and “art” in music. Full of purpose but never preaching, serious but still light- they are the perfect balance and their music carries that notion. A must-buy for certain, we need to support good music. Seeing them in Philadelphia 10/10. Can’t wait.
