Turkey banned access to YouTube again

A Turkish court has again blocked access to the popular video-sharing Web site YouTube, and reports Sunday suggested the ban was a response to clips that allegedly insult Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the country’s founding father. Users trying to access the site from Turkey were met with notices in English and Turkish saying access to the Web site was banned under an Ankara court’s order. The notices said the court order was issued Jan. 17. In March, another court blocked access to YouTube, which is owned by California-based Google Inc., for two days after a complaint that some clips insulted Ataturk, a war hero who founded Turkey from the ruins of the Ottoman Empire. The ban was lifted after YouTube removed the offending videos.

Vatan newspaper said Sunday the current ban was also imposed because of videos that were allegedly disrespectful of Ataturk. It is illegal in Turkey to insult Ataturk, a revered figure whose portrait still hangs in nearly all government offices almost 70 years since his death in 1938. It was not clear how long the current ban would last. The state-run Anatolia said YouTube officials issued a statement saying the company hoped access would be re-established quickly. The YouTube bans in Turkey have highlight the country’s troubled record on free expression. Several prominent Turkish journalists and writers — including Nobel literature prize winner Orhan Pamuk — have been tried for allegedly insulting “Turkishness.” And this country wants to join the European Union…

Current conservative politicians in Turkey make things worse and worse everyday. It is one of the dumbest actions they have taken lately. Conservatives do not consist the majority of the country but they sure make a lot of noise to look so and unfortunately no one dares to stand against them. Because of all this they take the usual conservative action: Do not try to solve, do not try to answer, just BAN! Idiot politicians giving chance to other idiots who will try to make fun of Turkey even without knowing a single thing about the country, that’s what’s happening.

Do not believe what u read,
Do not believe what u hear,
Even do not believe what u see.

I have seen a war with my own eyes, none of us can imagine what had happened in Bosnia. So EU people just stop talking , in the very center of EU , a genocide has just happened.

Watch “The Hunting Party” a new film about the war criminals of Bosnia.

Alas we should all be ashamed , not because of past, the current.

See the puppeteer , not the puppet.

Since this isn’t a torrent thread, I’ll permit myself an off-topic comment.

I hope to God these people never join the EU.

So long as they never acknowledge the first genocide of the 20th century, killing over 1 million Armenians, they don’t belong a place in the civilised world.

Criticize the wrong acts of censorship is a first step. Opinions like ..”you burn in hell” , “bomb them”, “invade them and force democracy”, “western killers”, “my religion is better” and fill all the blanks you want wont get any of us forward. I’m Greek and i’m biased against turkey governments and generals but i’m not against turkish plain people. Most of our ancestors (and sadly many times our present politicians) conquered, killed etc for what they thought to be a RIGHT reason. History is written from those that prevailed in a gory bloodshed battlefield.
Everyone that raises his/her fist in the air yelling holy war, or jihad against other people are braindead. Religion must set your mind free , not corner it and amputate it.
Live your life as a free man. Is shedding blood your catharsis to a better life full of angels, harps from one side to mountains of rice on the other?

As for the turkish court … what can i say? it a foolish act that degrades human rights.

As for my fellow country men, dont flame me with ethnocentrism comments. I served my country on the borders for 17 months and i’m proud for it (others aren’t). But I didnt post to pick a fight with the turks. Deep in their hearts, all “thinking” people can understand the implications made by censoring media. Worst part is when they put in jail all those that oppose their voice against the military/government system. Turkish government must make a great deal of progress in the department of human rights.

Anyway thats my opinion. And Rlslog isnt the place to get carried away in politics. Any new game Rls???

    R.I.P. Scit.
    Peace.

    Hello everyone,

i think we should be a little objective here and not rush to criticize the Turks. I’m Greek and my grand-grandfather got beheaded by Turks in 1922 (under the command of Ataturk) BUT if you know a little history you will understand why Turks are so sensitive about him.
He is their “father” – he made Turkey the (big but arrogant) country of today, without him they would have been a bunch of smaller states like the former Yugoslavia. It is logical that they have a law forbidding the insults against him – if they have a law they deserve a “bravo” for applying it.
We could criticize the fact of the law itself, but if you do not descend from Turkey (i’ve been there 3 times – the photo of Ataturk and their flag are eveywhere, even in the coffeeshops) you are not able to understand the law as it is.
And a last word about Turkey, some parts and some people of this country are more European than many parts and people of Europe, but that is an exception (unfortunately). And since it’s a very beautiful country (Greeks lived there for thousands of years and they knew better…) we should want by all means that they become a member of EU – then it will be easier to go and enjoy.

Point is you take yourself too serious. Pretty much every country has laws about not making fun of their leaders etc, but they also use some common sense about upholding these laws. If it was a site with the only purpose to ridicule that guy then I’ll understand the ban. But a site like Youtube with millions of movies making fun of pretty much everything and everybody on this planet, including leaders and historical persons from every nation, race, etc? That’s just silly and when you do something like that you have to face the consequences. In this case it’s just that the rest of the world think you are silly and laugh at you. But unfortunately it is also the reason for lots of wars in your region. If you lighten up and use some common sense the world would be a better place both for you and the rest of the world.

Just today i heard on a turkish cnn that about 20 members of a fascist/terrorist group in Turkey called “Grey Wolves” were brought to justice (what an oxymoron concept) because that were plotting to assassinate a christian patriarch or something.

I believe these “wolves” are some democratic thinking force right? I’ve searched for them a bit and just read a portion from what i read in Wikipedia.

    “Activities to date.

On a global scale, the Grey Wolves are suspected to have been responsible for numerous political assassinations and disappearances of Turkish and Kurdish human rights activists, and are known to have ties with the Turkish mafia.[11] The Grey Wolves have also raised funds for Chechen guerilla separatists, whom they consider their Turkish brothers.[12]

In 2004, the Grey Wolves successfully prevented the screening of Atom Egoyan’s Ararat in Turkey, a film about the Armenian Genocide.”

    the link is here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_Wolves

It will be fun to watch from some fascistic supporters of them here trying to present them as a democratic political group.

Stop burning churches, burning books, imprison liberal minds, assassinate political opponents, enforce paleolithic obsolete laws. I know about your religion “ways”… Convert to islam or die by my sword, the only true religion and fun stuff like these.

Get out of the 19th century.

  67. Dutchman
    January 22nd, 2008 | 19:44

And one more thing. If they are such a “marginal” group how can they enforce their opinion on the turkish public? how can a so-called small group dictating a whole nation what to watch and watch not.. How come they have such a strong “influence” as what is wrong or right and a nation dances to their likings banning media – free speech?

So out of the blue… from “there is no turkish terrorist group” here comes the howling of the wolves….

Are they the law? What are their ties with politicians?
    Are you supporting their actions?

Too many questions for you? Plz answer. I’m curious what is your agenda…

P.S. I prefer living in a corrupted democracy country than a corrupted narrowminded fanatical country.

i don’t see any difference to burn a church or kill an innocent civillian.

westerns calls them rebel or freedom fighters.

    judge yourself first.

I dont support terrorism. If PKK killed innocent civilians i detest such actions.

But you seem to avoid answering.
Are you supporting all these violations of human rights?

Why turkey is still under EU scrutiny for not altering human rights violating laws?
Do you know any other european country that is not abide to human rights, freedom of speech?

Dont cover up your dirty back yard. EU is not heaven. There are many aspects of life here that SUCK big time. But as i said i prefer corruption than fanaticism.

TRY and answer and not avoid facing a handful of facts.
I’m sure you will not answer them…

I wont reply again to anyone. I’ll return back to my soft drugs legalize country…. But hey at least i can admit it and criticize it. I wonder what would happen to me if i were in some wonnabe eu one… ;)

@175, that is because european countries realize that denying genocide is not humanity. It’s like saying the jewish holocaust didn’t happen. If you say that sh*t here in America you’ll get bashed. Genocide is not a joke.

and @ 177, go read a book or go on wikipedia.

BTW to the idiot who said ASALA are terrorists, you’re dumb. It’s a group of Armenians fighting for genocide recognition. They go after turkish diplomats not random civilians. They killed 50 people total in a matter of 25 years. If you consider that terrorism then what do you consider your Turkish government to be?

You guys, instead of wining here about our comments regarding this ridiculous censorship, go and protest outside of this … hilarious court and demand more freedom.

    how long americans advocate europeans?

in Turkey, denying the genocide of american natives is not humanity but not a crime too. you killed countless natives on their homeland and made their films to show how wild you are. you bombed over two hundred thousands of innocent people in dresden after germany surrended in WWII. You tested your nuclear bombs on japanese civillians. i don’t want to talk about iraq and somali. which is next?

are these enough to get you bashed?

do you want me to tell about europeans’ genocies?

but, in turkey saying that the Armenian genocide did happen will get you thrown in jail. We’re smarter than that, we know your government committed the Armenian genocide, the whole world knows it but Turkey keeps denying it and in America it’s not even recognized as a genocide.

“20th century written by blood and it was not yours…”

In your dreams. The United States freed more people and gave more humane aid in the 20th century, than any nation has previous to that century.

Why don’t you go ask Romanians, Bulgarians, Hungarians and all the other people the Ottoman Empire kept under harrowing conditions for centuries, before you go lobbing blame at a country which isn’t perfect — but it’s infinitessimally better than your country.

    I’m not even American either.

Why we have to accept something what we didn’t? whole the world don’t look objectively about this.

At the begenning of WWI, The Ottoman Empire was weaken. The opportunist Armenians used this situation against Ottoman Empire. They wore Russian uniforms and attacked out civilian villages and killed thousands of innocent people. Because of this, Ottoman Empire forced about (800.000 – total 1.3 millions were living in the Ottoman Empire) Armenians to migrate. Many of them died because of conditions of the time and be killed while migrating, yes its true but not more than armenians’ did. Many of people who damaged the immigrants punished.

    @184
“Why don’t you go ask Romanians, Bulgarians, Hungarians and all the other people the Ottoman Empire kept under harrowing conditions for centuries”

Have you ever asked? None of them don’t say any bad thing about The Ottoman Empire because they lived in peace while the reign of The Ottoman Empire.

“In your dreams. The United States freed more people and gave more humane aid in the 20th century, than any nation has previous to that century.”

i really feel offended by these comments since i am a turk myself

obviously not many of you have been to turkey even once in their lives.. you wouldn’t be as aggressive and even blind

censorship is bad but it is a common procedure even in the most developed countries and it has nothing to do with democracy

talking about democracry in greece makes my stomach hurt

stop being ignorant like that and if you don’t i hope war will be in the end of present day economy crisis, so all of you will be thought a better lesson on what exactly turkey is: a good or a bad country, a strong or a weak one
