Turkey banned access to YouTube again

A Turkish court has again blocked access to the popular video-sharing Web site YouTube, and reports Sunday suggested the ban was a response to clips that allegedly insult Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the country’s founding father. Users trying to access the site from Turkey were met with notices in English and Turkish saying access to the Web site was banned under an Ankara court’s order. The notices said the court order was issued Jan. 17. In March, another court blocked access to YouTube, which is owned by California-based Google Inc., for two days after a complaint that some clips insulted Ataturk, a war hero who founded Turkey from the ruins of the Ottoman Empire. The ban was lifted after YouTube removed the offending videos.

Vatan newspaper said Sunday the current ban was also imposed because of videos that were allegedly disrespectful of Ataturk. It is illegal in Turkey to insult Ataturk, a revered figure whose portrait still hangs in nearly all government offices almost 70 years since his death in 1938. It was not clear how long the current ban would last. The state-run Anatolia said YouTube officials issued a statement saying the company hoped access would be re-established quickly. The YouTube bans in Turkey have highlight the country’s troubled record on free expression. Several prominent Turkish journalists and writers — including Nobel literature prize winner Orhan Pamuk — have been tried for allegedly insulting “Turkishness.” And this country wants to join the European Union…

Making fun of Islam and the people of the country doesn’t make sense. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was not a religious man, he tried to modernize the country. Also, I’m pretty damn sure the people of the country didn’t want YouTube banned. You have to remember it IS against the law to make fun of him or any other high status person. Trying to even get rid of that law would be difficult and contreversal. This has NOTHING to do with ISLAM and ISLAMIST. Islamist, at most, don’t like Ataturk.

It’s something different with Bush and Ataturk if you are comparing them with their political status cuz’ Ataturk has a very social & emotional impact on every Turkish citizen’s heart. Therefore thinking in this focus, you can realize the degree of sensitivity in Turkish people. Ofcourse free speech is supported if not in a hostile manner. I agree that banning a site is illogical and not a solution but Turks are emotional people and this is totally unrelated with barbarianism and etc.

why exactly can people just think of it as just another video?

not about islam? it’s all about islam and their conservative views here. unlike most of you ignorant pricks, i actually have lived in a muslim state and know a thing or two about islam views, customs etc.

a state that cannot tolerate mocking of its leaders or other highly regarded figures is by western standards not a modern or progressive state. (example: germany’s angela merkel on the front page of a prominent german magazine, openly criticism towards g. bush on national television etc)

any way you want to look at it, the islamist ideals will always collide with “modern” western values.

Absolutely nothing to do with religions.

They can be called conservative? Yes. Freaks? Why not? But religious fanatics? NO.

To Turkish ppl and law, honoring the father of the Turkey’s foundation is as important as prtecting their children from pedophiles to Western ppl, I don’t see any harm in that. Are they calling fanatics to suicide bomb Youtube servers? Jeez, you too should chill out a little.

Ataturk was not a religious/islamic person. Islam bans alcohol and he died from cirrhosis..
But the youtube ban, caused by islamic government. The ban’s reason is not the videos making fun of Atatürk. It’s the videos making fun of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan & Abdullah Gül.
But press don’t mention it, because we don’t have a free press here. Also it’s under control of the government..

I shame on this behaviour. Bans won’t solve anything. Grievous people reached their desires. Enforcers can’t fight against these pathetic, grievous people, so they ban the website and they think if nobody access the website(from Turkiye), there will be no problem.

Why people resist to write bad things about Ataturk.(Maybe they can’t put up with this situation). Also, if you become a real Muslim with praying, making religious exercises, but with lying, stealing, insulting other people, then i am not a real Muslim. How can you question somebody’s religion? How can you know sth between Allah and prayer. Shame on you too brother(number 41). Ottomans didn’t write and talk in Arabic. They write and talk in Ottoman, old Turkish(reformed into modern Turkish) and other ethnic languages. Ottoman is very different from Arabic. Ataturk changed it because he wanted every person learn how to write. You are so arrogant. I bet you don’t accept Alawism as a part of Islam. Do you think you will go to the paradise, after insulting people?

A lot of people criticize the Bush governement all the time and never had any problems.Of course now if you you threaten to blow out the White House or kill Bush that’s another thing because it may be seen as a threat by the Feds but criticizing the policies of the governement shouldn’t bring a an army of men dressed in black suits at your front door.

Turkey quit denying the Armenian genocide, the facts are right in front of you. And stop threatening you’re own Allies (U.S) when the genocide resolution came out.

Why is this Releaselog material anyway? We had heated (yet equally non-sense) discussions on articles even less related to Turks than this one (i.e. Crisis, Fog and the Night). This one simple calls for Turcophobia. Also finishing the article with a nice little reminder: “And this country wants to join the European Union…”. Are we to ‘assume good faith’ in mod Martin’s actions?

PS F EU. Enjoy your post-modern fascist state.

We all want freedom of expression but the thing what you understand from civilization is blasphemy!

Ataturk is a hero who called all slave nations for freedom (especially Muslims) and gave them hope of FREEDOM. But you “civilized” people don’t know the meaning of this. Because you are meaningless. While you eating your burgers and downloading porn, thousands of people dies from wars you caused.

God bless “good” people all around the world and i wish mercy for all the others…

    @81

    I’ll drink to that.

Nothing like watching these internet heroes jumping on their high horses at any given chance (such as this), playing the defender and commander of all that is righteous and moral in the world.

These heroes tend to believe their righteousness and morality are warranted by their nationality, race, religion or whatever. Ignorance is bliss, ignoring at what expense (or more importantly whose expense) each developed country today prospered and progressed in time. Most things they take for granted. I try to not bother myself with it too much but they make the most of world’s population so it’s hard to avoid.

I’m hearing a lot of crap about america and free speech. There is no free speech in America, the Media and government is always lying to you. They say what they want the people to hear, not the truth.

Oh btw, if there was free speech Bush would’ve called the armenian genocide a genocide at least. Instead, the called the deaths of 1.5 million Armenians a “tragedy.” Seems like he can’t even say what he wants or else their little biatches turkey might get offended. Genocide here in America is not recognized for the sake of army bases. R.I.P Hrand Dink, murdered cause he mentioned the Armenian genocide in an article in turkey.

Turkey is a fascisitic overmilitarized land that likes to hunt down and kill its own neighbours. Just think of the Armenian Genocide (1.500.000 Armenians killed and raped by the Turks, ask the Greeks who suffered 400 years(!) under the brutal ottoman boot, ask the Kurds who are hunted down and assasinated by the Turks as we speak, ask the Cypriots whose country in 1974 was cold-blooded invaded and occupied by the brutal turkish army etc. To all those neighbours who got to know Turks well, the Youtube-ban is no surprise at all. Turks are unfortunately still living in the dark times of Middleage.

I am Hellin, living in Hellas, where there is a huge satira and criticism against our goverment. I just came back from my vacations in Sweet Paris (where i can go whenever i like), where there is a huge satira and criticism against Sarcozi and i remember very good the satira and criticism against Berluskoni in Italy. We may still have problematic Democracies But i believe we are on the correct path.

If some lameass person tries to malign Ataturk, does it actually harm the legend who is not alive anymore or does it remove him from the respected position in the mind of all of his devoted worshipers? Ataturk was, is and will remain as a hero because he simply was. Useless steps like this will only harm the image of Turkey. And NO AT LEAST THIS SUPID ACT OF STUBBORNNESS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HARDCORE ISLAMIC FANATICISM.
This reminds me of a similar incident when some1 from US had posted a funny video of himself posing as Gandhi striping & doing a (really bad) polldance. This prompted the Indian Govt. to ban Youtube as was expected - but no that wasn’t all, the ban was lifted before a fortnite was over as being the highest populated democracy in the world, Indians knew the true value of free speech. That video clip is still available in YT, just no one watches it anymore… :D

    Finally on a lighter note:
Once when they met during a summit, Regan told Gorbachev, “You know, even if someone shouts standing at the Time Square “I wanna fcuk the as5 of the prez of US as he is a sick b4strd” noone will do anything to him - coz that’s the spirit of democracy and freedom of speech my friend!”
Gorbachev replied “Big deal, if the does the same standing in front of Cremlin, he will even be awarded! That’s the spirit of USSR my friend!”
    ;)

@86 : This is completely flawed logic. The government and the media lying are two completely different thing. Here , let me help you :

“Freedom of speech is the concept of being able to speak freely without censorship. The right to freedom of speech is guaranteed under international law through numerous human rights instruments, notably under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights, although implementation remains lacking in many countries. The synonymous term freedom of expression is sometimes preferred, since the right is not confined to verbal speech but is understood to protect any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information or ideas, regardless of the medium used.

In practice, the right to freedom of speech is not absolute in any country, although the degree of freedom varies greatly. Industrialized countries also have varying approaches to balance freedom with order. For instance, the United States First Amendment theoretically grants absolute freedom, placing the burden upon the state to demonstrate when (if) a limitation of this freedom is necessary. In almost all liberal democracies, it is generally recognized that restrictions should be the exception and free expression the rule; nevertheless, compliance with this principle is often lacking.”

To claim that America doesn’t have any freedom of speech is just funny and ignorant. As far as Georgie calling the Armenian genocide a genocie , this has nothing to do with freedom of speech once again. It’s all about being politically correct to not offend our “allies”.

    Try again

this has nothing to do with free expression. one cant have the right to insult the values that millions gave great importance.. if u want u can insult your own ones and call it free expression.. i call it degeneration and cheap way to get attraction.. besides near 700 years millions lived freely, keeping their own faith and religion under turkish rule in three continents, while u ’so called civilized’ people of europe were exploiting the world and killing millions.. this hasnt changed today is it? france in algeria, germans in ww2,england all over the world …but in the end U are civilized, while we are the barbarians. !!!!

Wow you guys are still insulting about races and cultures. You still don’t know we’re all humans. I’m sorry guys but I really pity you. I know a lot of people around the world. I met a British person and he was so nice and generous but I didn’t say “all the British ppl are good” after I saw that guy. I met a French person and he was lame to people and he was selfish too but I didn’t say “wow this guy is totally lame. then all French ppl must be lame” or something. I met Romanians, Hungarians, Japaneses, Turks ect but I never judged all their nations because of them because it’s not the person what makes a nation good or evil. A person can’t just mirror all behaviours of their nation’s people. If you can’t understand that, then don’t blame anybody with barbarism, it’s you who is barbarian!

This board is filled with disinformation, misinformation, hatred, bias, libel and all with lame language. There are some voices of reason here and there but they are easily lost in all this mess. It pretty much sums up the world we live in today. Thank you for bringing this very important news to us Martin. How dare a Turkish court bans YouTube. How dare Turks execute their own laws when they should be adopting EU laws like all little good-boy Euro-states did. You wouldn’t recognize fascism unless you saw a German with a half moustache.
