Turbonegro – Retox Retail (2007)

Here’s something for more tough boys out there: Turbonegro is a popular Norwegian music band doing a special kind of rock. It’s influenced by many other music genres and other bands and these guys call it officially “deathpunk”. With more than 7 albums going back to 1992, this band already earned a lot of reputation and it’s celebrated by crowds of fans all around the world. The album is scheduled to release on August 14 in the USA, so you get it with a huge advance here!

According to Turbonegro Retox is “a nihilistic homo punk metal bikermovie: Full of speed, power, humiliation and freedom!”. “Retox is rock music that’s been up for 5 days without sleeping, able to see more than most people, but not seeing anything exactly clear.” They have also added: “We survived Grunge, Britpop, House music, hip-hop, new rock revolution, dance rock, but maybe not new rave..? People say we’ve been making the same record for 10 years, that’s not right. We’ve been making the same record for 4-5 years.” The album is an allover good compilation, with references to older heavy rock and heavy metal that works very well with the Turbonegro sound.

Turbonegro were formed in late 1988 by Rune, Pål and Tom. They made their first concert in Copenhagen April 1989, made their first 7″ the same year (produced by Chris Calmeye, who also produced “Ass cobra” and “Never is forever”). The comeback was followed by a large US tour, called “The Res-Erection Tour”, together with Queens of the Stone Age, a continuing tour in Europe, ending up with hall-conserts in Norway, and the release of the album “Scandinavian leather” 28th of April 2003. In Norway they really hit the charts during spring 2003 with both the single “Fuck the world” (5th place), the album “Scandinavian leather” (1st). Also the old album “Apocalypse dudes” climbed the top charts, and the old video “Turbonegro – The movie” (15th) on the DVD-list.

this comment is not about their music, but one must admit this band seems to be created from an unholy union between marilyn manson and the village people.

by the way- tough boys don’t wear fur complimented with black eyeliner, and nobody should ever wear fur and denim, it doesn’t work. fur is murder but this is a fashion holocaust!

i will dl now just so i can listen to them.

Well I didn’t listen to their last albums but I recall Apocalypse Dudes as one of the best 90s rock albums. Absolutely stunning.

Anyway, stop judging by their look. It doesn’t take you anywhere.

Anybody who would dare model in a publicity picture like the one above must be a complete homo. Nice uniforms. Looks like a return of Y.M.C.A. Not the sort of band that i would stick up for if they were put through ridicule. Their name isn’t too bad but as the ignorant person i so proudly am i would rather eat my right arm than listen to the cack this most probably is. They need detox not retox. Nice try but try not to look so gay next time. lol. Is that Wayne Rooney in the sailor hat ?

Not bad… interesting… first song reminded me of The Doors LA Woman and it’s clear they are influenced by many different groups. As for any gay comments…. hell as long as I don’t have them (or any male…) try to cop a feel then I don’t care what gender or orientation they might enjoy. I would go see them if they played in town (HOUSTON).

Houston, ha, i grew up there. Austin is much better tho.

I’ll withhold judgment until I hear this. A bunch of great music is out there, you’ve just got to be open to it

so I got it, eh so far through 3 songs. nothing all too special. reminds me of Electric Six but less funny. i’ll check out the rest sometime because a song titled “Stroke the Shaft” has to be heard. I’m way too curious.

    btw, it IS totally gay

@ Dickface, Austin you say… well you know what the city’s motto is don’t you… If not it’s “Keep Austin Weird”… how did you escape?

Haha, there are so many stupid people commenting here. They said themselves in an interview published days ago, that they are doing the “homo” image ironicly, to provoke all the people out there with all their prejudice against gays, lesbians and whatnot.

And Dave, are you really saying that you are’nt even going to check it out just because they look weird in their promo shots? what a sad guy you must be.

I recommend everyone to check out prince of the rodeo, i got erection, the age of pamparius, and get it on.

A little something for the masses… when David Bowie first started out, he played a guitar, wearing a dress in gay bars…

So what, I still like his music.

Gotta love the name! The music is OK: great riffs now and then that get f*cked up by the vocals of the singer. I’m going to check out their other albums now, but only because I can download those for free. There is bound to be one pearl on all of those.

And people, images in popular culture are 95% fake. The people you see are never the people they really are. Don’t love the image, love the music!

a good band for the gays

Let’s see, Lou Reed (early days), Jeff Beck, Queen, Black Oak Arkansas, Donovan, Lead Singer for Judith Priest, if you believe the press… Mick Jagger and David Bowie had a little thing going on… why worry…. if the person or group is good why worry… OH, lead singer for REM. I haven’t named any women singers or groups as the point seem to be toward male groups or individuals. But if you think by listening to their music is going to have an affect on you and turn you gay then seek help my friends.

    It’s an image, nothing more.
They are all highly educated. Thomas Seltzer, aka Happy-Tom, in marketing.
It’s a gimmick! (not that it matters)

Jeans, make-up, leather, sailor-suits. They have always done what they’re not “supposed” to do.
They used shoe polish in their faces in the beginning.

    Who cares??!
It’s all about the music anyway.

    These guys are so amazing!
They manage to be hardcore and homoerotic while still keeping
the death punk sound we have all grown to love!
I can’t wait to get their newest album on vinyl!

“It’s like the best bits of The Rolling Stones mixed with the best bits of Black Flag, but composed by Shostakovich, Stalin’s in-house composer.”

If you don’t get this all you ignorant dumbf**ks, sad for you!
