It’s a slow Saturday and what better time to tell you about this cult classic crime thriller from 1993. Hell, just look at the cast. Can it get any better than that? If you haven’t seen it yet, you’re in for a treat. If you have, well, you can always watch it again, especially in this Director’s Cut version. Oh, did I mention it was written by the great Tarantino?

Synopsis: When inexperienced call girl Alabama Whitman (Patricia Arquette) is paid to seduce comic-book-nerd and Elvis fanatic Clarence Worley (Christian Slater), she doesn’t expect to fall for him. But these two lost souls seem to be made for each other and quickly pledge their love, marrying at Detroit’s city hall. Clarence discovers some newfound bravado and attempts to retrieve Alabama’s possessions from her pimp, Drexl (Gary Oldman), who isn’t exactly eager to let Alabama go. Fleeing Drexl’s apartment, Clarence not only leaves a trail of bodies, but also inadvertently mistakes a suitcase of uncut cocaine for one with his wife’s clothing, and the chase is on.

    I seriously have this DVD on right now. Weird huh?

    QT’s commentary is awesome, and it’s a great copy of a great film. Uncut version is fantastic, before the days of anything being “unrated” or “extended”.

    Does anyone have an mp3 of the Edgar Wright/Quentin Tarantino commentary from the Hot Fuzz R1 3 Disc set?

    How come this classic didn’t get nominated at the time for Oscars.This is a movie with a wonderful cast and superb acting,great comedy,great drama,a love story and action.
    And more important this movie never gets boring. You can watch it again and again.

    “No country for old men” is nothing compared to “True Romance”! Other than “The Big Lebowski” there isn’t a single
    movie from the Coen Brothers that comes close to the brilliance of “True Romance”.

    Great pick. I used to watch this and Mallrats until my vhs tapes wore out. I have to say though that if these staff picks are supposed to make up for sh1t weeks of releases, they should be more obscure. So far any real film lover would have seen virtually every staff pick already.

    Hey guys ‘True Romance’ is great and I’ve seen it many years ago and it is still great (think of the trailer scene w. Walken and who’s his opponents name?)

    … but there is a docuflic that you just have to see (I have just seen it):

    WOW! Now I have seen this documentary. This (’Send A Bullet’) is mindblowing. Not that I didn’t know about violence on this planet in general, or about violence in some latin american cities in particular. But getting confronted with images and sounds of the violence of men towards men still puts me off.

    Off course the violence I speak of includes politicians like Jader Barbalho robbing the people off billions [10^9] of Dollars and still getting elected for senator. I don’t have to mention that Jader Barbalho owns the biggest newspapers, television, and radiostations in ‘his’ state Para(?).

    The pictures, the smiling faces (except the victim who we accompany through her surgery).

    That makes me cry. Our politicians and reality in germany is much less painful. But still … we are so similar. Less economical prosperity here, and people change. Not yet nearly so much, luckily for me here in germany or you few in the other less contrasty societies.

    That’s a valid point, but I feel that a lot of people have indeed missed these classics as you can tell by some of the comments. I do, however, plan to post about a lot more less-known movies in the future. :)

    This was fantastic, a really good staff pick. Never seen this before, but it’s now one of my favorite movies for sure. So many good scenes, and the climax is one of the best things I’ve ever seen.

    Grrrr - I *LOVE* this film but preferred the theatrical release as they changed the ending for this one and it ruined it for me :(

    I even brought the directors cut but hate the new ending so much I’m going to get rid of it and buy the theatrical version I think!

    The direction is done by Tony Scott.
    If you have seen more movies made by him than you can recognize his style (Last boy scout,Man on Fire).
