    @21, Fumes.

    Torrents?

    Why?

    Using http storage sites is way faster than donwloading the same release by torrent.

    I just downloaded True Blood (530MB) in 20 minutes. If was using torrents, that download will take 2 hours.

    Keep up with the times man.

    While I generally use direct links. The free http download sites are all limited(Quickupload being the exception at the moment). 150kbs – Hotfile, Up to 190ish from Storage and Megaupload. A torrent can easily max out your ADSL connection and therefore download a lot quicker.

    emibel:

    You must never have used a video converter. MP4s are DVD files. Typically 700 MB avis convert to 2 GB MP4. Uploaders download as avis and if they converted, it would take unnecessary time. I convert a 1 hour avi to mp4 at real time, but i have quad-pro and 8 GB Ram. Otherwise it could take double time.

    I wish MKV would become standard. It is superior to avi, and saves on CDs.

    The CC Cleaner people offer a free, no restrictions utility called, "Any Video Converter." It even converts Euro-asian PAL vids to NTSC, for American use. Use it if you want MP4 quality; and you can usually get 2 full movies on one DVD.

    Don't come here for MP4s.

  71. DK
    August 31st, 2009 | 15:10

    @Bruce – Not everyone can get into private torrent sites. If we could I think we'd all be in there downloading away but that is the idea behind private torrent sites right? Only a select few thousand or more to keep the leechers down as much as possible while keep the seeders high. That's why the speed is so fast. So many seeders and less leechers. Plus you gotta have a decent UPLOAD speed to keep up a good ratio or you will get banned.

    @Mutt69 – Uploaders get the avi's from the people who cap the shows. Even though the standard is avi's which almost everyone can play without installing extra stuff I think at least one release group can convert the file they capture into MP4 which if encoded right is equal to avi size but yet superior in quality because of the codec it uses. I don't know where you get the idea that MP4 are DVD files. DVD files are MPEG2 based while Bluray is based on a newer, better codec. X264 I believe. I could be mistaken.

    And the debate between direct downloads and torrents is this: America is like 28th place in the world when it comes to internet speed with UK not far above. And the average Americans' internet connection is 5mbps. Some have slower connections while some have even higher connections but still most of us have crap speeds. So this means that direct downloads are the fastest way to download these files for the majority of us who have crap speeds not just in the US. Public torrents have way more leechers than seeders and the download speeds are always much more than upload speeds so there will always be that problem.

    Those of you who blab on about private torrents or becoming premium to get full speed should realize that not everyone has a fast connection like you and can't reap the benefits of that. So can we stop arguing about this? Some ways are better suited for different people based on their connection. There are pros and cons for both.

    @mutt99,

    sorry dude, but if you can't intelligently respond the man's question, please stop spitting out jargon that makes absolutely NO sense whatsoever.

    First, mp4's are NOT dvd files… nowhere close…. and your precious xvid avis ARE mp4's. H264, DIVX, XVID, Generic, on and on… they are all mpeg-4 compliant files. DVD files are mpeg-2 encodes, and must conform to a particular resolution in order to be DVD compliant.

    "Don't come here looking for mp4's"…. I guess we all ought to just give up coming here for anything.

    Scene releases conform to the xvid standard for many reasons, not ANY of them being because of the bs you spit. Sorry to put you in your place, dude, but enough of the attitude when all the guy did was ask a question….

    BTW, if you're using that freebie video converter, then by your own words, you're only one step up the ladder from not ever having used an encoder yourself.

    'nuff said, I'm out.

    A DVD is a storage medium. Uploaders can save avis quickly, and put them on the file sharers in seconds. The best video converters note mpeg2 encoding, of "mp4" files. These are usually 2 to 3 times the size of the original avis, and are better.

    Non-loudmouths can use this free utility to convert to mp4 files that can be saved to DVDs. I usually can put 2 full movies on one disc.

    mp4s can be saved to DVD yeah, so can avi … as long as your dvd player can play the CODECS USED IN THE MP4!!! They are not DVD files, mpeg2 is real DVD encoding, mp4 is just a shell to put any one of several different codecs into, just the same as avi.
    If you are encoding an avi into an mp4 and the mp4 is twice the size, then your encoding the mp4 with different codecs that dont have the same level of compression as the avi you have. You clearly are not encoding them properly and dont understand what you are talkin about.
