I’m in the Astra alpha-testing phases right now and it’s so much better than 3.1, the new Astra protocol and it’s features are great. Really glad i’m on the testing team or else i wouldn’t be able to try the new features since you need an actual testing account to use them

I’d second the (confidence) vote in Pidgin. I don’t trust any close-source project that’s related to communication, its too hard to find out how secure your information really are.

Can someone tell me what the difference is with the free version? Does the videochat work? does it actually support avatars unlike the free one?

Trillian > Pidgin > Digsby > Miranda IM
Digsby currently uses 50+ MB of memory with only 2 services enabled. On Trillian, it’s 9 MB. Miranda IM has one of the worst and most complicated skinning preferences i’ve ever see, very UN-user-friendly. Pidgin/GAIM just never impressed me.
Does anyone know an alternative to ICQ which offers the ‘[user] is typing’ feature?
(Because I downloaded an older version of Trillian a year ago, and I had to switch back to ICQ because I’m addicted to that feature;) )

i currently use trillian…mine shows when *MOST* users are typing a message…but im about to check out Digsby…it appears to be alright, im not too worried about ram consumption, but if it does cause a problem, ill stick to trillian

On what does it depend? Client the others use?
quick update….there is an extreme difference, i use trillian with 4mb of ram…..Digsby uses 109mb, definitely a large difference, but Digsby has many more features, so i guess its somewhat expected.

if im not mistaken, some users can change an option that stops their buddies from being able to see when they are typing something, so some of the users on it dont show when they are typing
Miranda IM is for sceners.
Trilian is for p2p users
and i obviously am a p2p user….im pretty sure sceners wouldnt need rlslog to get their movies and warez

I had never heard of digsby before, but after using it for a while it’s probably the worst piece of software I’ve ever used.
Pidgin/GAIM is what I prefer if I have to use some IM client (other than for IRC) but I don’t mind Miranda either.
Trillian is just so dated (and closed off) now - still, it’s far better than digsby.
