Toshiba introduced world’s lightest laptop
Toshiba on Tuesday launched a new ultraportable laptop that it claims is the world’s lightest, putting it in contention with vendors including Apple and Lenovo. The company said the full-featured Portégé R500-S5007V weighs just 2.4 pounds (1.08 kilograms), compared to Apple’s MacBook Air, which weighs 3 pounds, and Lenovo’s Thinkpad X300, which weighs around 2.93 pounds. The laptop measures 0.77 inches at its thinnest point, according to Toshiba. The company also claimed that the new laptop was the first to include a 128G-byte solid-state drive (SSD) to replace the hard drive. Laptops to date have had 64G bytes of storage, though both Lenovo and Apple provide 128G bytes of storage through two 64G-byte modules.

Battery life is also preserved by the laptop’s transreflective 12.1-inch screen, which can shut down the LED (light-emitting diode) backlighting by reflecting the sun’s rays to illuminate the screen, according to Toshiba. For US$2,999, users can get a laptop powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo U7700 processor at 1.33GHz, with 2M bytes of cache and 2G bytes of RAM. It will come with Windows Vista Business OS, which is also downgradable to Windows XP Professional. The laptop includes a SuperMulti optical drive that can read and rewrite DVD and CD media, wired and wireless 802.11 a/g/n networking, Bluetooth 2.0 support and built-in safety features to protect laptop data during falls. The Portégé R500-S5007V is a standard configuration, however, Toshiba offers similar configurations with a hard drive option, a company spokesperson said.

this is awesome. looking forward to buying
Awesome… some fine specs as well
Eee…what prices man…Eee
love toshiba..
whats the big deal with weight anyway?
to me lighter means easier to break.
no way id pay more based on it being lighter
Cool! Only three thousand dollars, I’ll take 2 please :).
A bit too expensive for me, but very nice specs! Looking forward to the price dropping on these.
Don’t see the news here. The R500 is about a year old. I bought one in November. This looks like a minor hardware update with a bigger SSD but the rest of the specs are the same as a year ago.
think it’s better than the friggin macbook air…
i love apple, but i think is better than MBA, but it’s expensive…
doh…!!! of course, is the lightest….
too expencive, imo
hmm one of these or 6 eee pcs, which one will I go for the same price?

sou mean to say that when it breaks you cant even use it as a doorstop!
du mi nied sangleses ?
What’s the battery life, couldn’t find it on the article.
“For US$2,999″
Right, I’ll just settle with this slightly thicker laptop that has a Core2Duo 2GHz processor, with my 4GB of RAM and 768MB graphics card, including DVD burner and Blu-ray reader for only AUD$1,399, (roughly US$1,317).
I can’t believe people buy these things…
Errrrm lightest laptop at 1.03Kg?? and going head to head with apple and lenovo for weight?
has anyone heard of the Vaio TZ..?
isnt a pound where lost dogs go? that mus weigh alot.
Doesn’t matter THE laptop….the question is : why such a precius thing use VISTA? I mean…that amazing TOSHIBA is like a FERRARI with a geo METRo engine.
The real diference between APPLE Macbook AIR and this toshiba laptop is not the size…is the OS
There’s no OS like MAc OS X
Mistake in the article:
“It will come with Windows Vista Business OS, which is also downgradable to Windows XP Professional.”
Should read:
“It will come with Windows Vista Business OS, which is also upgradable to Windows XP Professional.”
$2999, thats almost 50EUR
These havent just been release yesterday! We had one at work at least 2 weeks ago and that was refurbished so its been a hell of a lot longer than that. We even had to wait for it to come back into stock for about a month…….and yes its a very sexy machine
1.33 Ghz processor, isn’t that a little low? and def. better then the MBA because it has like so many more ports and a optical drive!
For US$2,999, it should have Blue-Ray.
Um, the Macbook Air doesn’t offer 128GB SSD? Only 64GB. And @17, people buy these superportable labtops for business trips and convenience for the people who need what it offers.
We have a bunch of these at work, i’m not sure why they are supposed to be new. I have one sitting right next to me here! We’ve had them for months. Unless this is some slightly more juicy model or maybe we just got special corporation love and got them early.
The R500 is a great laptop. Our toshiba rep actually said 990gm was the weight. 990gm / 1.08kg meh. Very light, especially given they have an optical drive - something the older slimline toshiba’s didn’t have.
