I think the clone concept is working well. They kept the stig, and the format is obviously a winning formula. I mean compare Top Gear UK to Fifth Gear, and Fifth Gear comes out smelling like fermented babies turd mixed with pickled leprosy. The only thing that is “new” that the aussies are trying to do is that crap “what were they thinking?” board. That should be scrapped ASAP. Number one because they pronounced “Legnum” as “Leg numb” and number two because its the segment that that tosser that draws cartoons is trying to “host” as his little part of the show.
Australians as a rule will always bag their own product. I remember cringing in the past at other Australian produced shows (Mission Impossible 2 for example) but when speaking to people from overseas, they loved it. *shrugs*
I like Charlie Cox and the other guy that can drive, but the cartoon idiot is trying to push that he can draw pictures a little too much and it needs to go.
Other than that, I have enjoyed the show, and I while they backed away from the Ford Vs Holden debate, at least they fried a stack of tyres while doing it.

I have quite enjoyed this so far. Don’t expect it to be as good as the original it will more than likely keep you satisfied until the next UK series. It is the highest rated Australian produced show in the history of SBS so obviously not everyone dislikes it.

The American’s copy a lot of shows from the UK, they can hardly be called original concepts.

P*** off! The US wouldn’t know entertainment if it fell on them; and when did the US produce anything like Top Gear – answer “Never” (altho American Chopper has its moments)
I agree with Flo (#23)- if you look back to the early series of the UK Top Gear it was pretty dull and the presenters were very ’straight’ I have an old episode when a very much younger Clarkson was at a swap-meet – looks a real dork. Now he just acts like one.
I am a total fan of the UK version and I think the Oz version will mature, the presenters are trying too hard to please (and be clones of Clarkson and co?). I agree that they didn’t need to copy the sets etc (and the Stig ???). At least the UK version used “Stig’s African cousin” in the safari episode – perhaps the Oz version could have done something similar.
There are a lot of similarities – Warren Brown is shaping up to be “Capt Slow” (a James May clone) and the other two play off each other like Clarkson and Hamster with Brown/May as the butt of many of their jokes.

Good effort with room for improvement. I suspect that with its prev audience base and the Aussie love of the V8 it could be a success.

I watched the first episode and hung in for 20 minutes, then switched to boarder security.

These guys are pushing the “aussie slang” down our throats way too much and they have no personalities yet that we could relate too.

Uninteresting, over the top and a waste of bandwidth.

I wish the presenters would have just been less try-hard and they may have had a chance.

Its a clone because that’s what they decided to do. The networks buy the right to the base concept and are pretty much free to adapt it as they wish to better suit the local market. (See the US Kath and Kim for an example of where major changes are made to the show)

On this, I’m Aussie and yes there’s a lot of letters to the TV guides cringing at this. But most of all people are just asking “Why?”. Its a bit like that frame by frame remake of psycho – completely pointless.

It is a clone because they licenced the concept from the UK. That means it has to be exactly the same, it would be in the agreement.

There is something wrong with car testers in this country though. I mean, how can you possibly review a car by being driven around in it by one of the company reps (Maybach)? And putting a car in a studio, starting it for 5 seconds (long enough to bounce it off the rev limiter) then turn it off and going on to something else is not a bleeding review. Even the Porsche test was a wuss out, he casually doddle around Tasmania like he was on a Sunday arvo drive.

Having said that I have hopes it will improve. The second episode was definitely better than the first.

I know a mates friend did the samething to sbs..and he wasn’t writing a nice letter either, he was very blunt and straight up about what he thought.The following is just a snippet of what was in the letter..

“Monday night was once the night where the girlfriend would leave me alone for an hour of “Dream Time”. Top gear, beer, salty snacks, cool cars driven they way they should be and the occasional txt from a mate advising me on such important issues as “Audi sure fixed lambo” or “Wankers drive M3’s”.

Even the girlfriend walked off tonight muttering “what was that crap”. So thank you TopGear Australia. All I have to look forward to next Monday night is a lecture about period pain and the operating temperature of the Sunbeam SBPC10TC 3/4 INCH CURLING IRON……. “

Just watched the first episode and I dont think its as bad as everybody says.

I am a huge Jeremy Clarkson fan but I dont see the new Aussi version as a straight copy. they try hard to and at least the main host has some charisma.

just the 2 supporting moderators aren’t the best choice.
especially the driving instructor. he talks way too fast and loud which is an obvious sign for being nervous.

maybe they should recast those two, or at least the driving instructor because the main host and him just dont have any chemistry like Clarkson and Hammond.

Give it some time and it might get a lot better. BTW did you know even Top Gear recasted James May in the 3rd Season? this shows it needs some time and development. The first episode and season of Top Gear sucked compared to the brilliant shows we see now!

so dont hate it right from the start, just give it a chance!
