Top 25 torrent sites (September 2008)

I decided to compile a list of Top 25 torrent websites to the current date, which means almost the beginning of September. I’ve seen similar lists few years ago but noone really updated them anymore and there were some new players on this field as well, so here’s the actual version. The list includes only public websites, which allows you to download torrents without registration or ratio requirements.

All the numbers are based on Alexa rating. While Alexa struggles to provide exact numbers for smaller websites, it’s quite accurate for big sites like these on the list. I looked for actual rating of each website and also added the rating which the site held back in March 2008. The rating expresses the popularity of the website on the whole internet, so number 69 in case of Mininova means it’s the 69th most popular website on the world. The last column is obviously the percentual change between these two dates.

Some interesting results can be interpreted after analyzing this chart. Mininova still remains the world’s most popular BitTorrent website, but their position was even stronger half a year ago. The Pirate Bay which secured the second position actually improved a bit. The third place is occupied by Isohunt, which remains on the same level.

The biggest movers are fifth Demonoid (which was basically offline in March), meta indexer Torrentz.ws and Onlytorrents.com at 18th place. On the other hand, torrent sites which experienced the biggest outflow of visitors are Torrentspy (shut down due to court order), relatively unknown GamesTorrents and also myBittorrent.com. 2. August 29th, 2008 | 22:46

    August 29th, 2008 | 23:21

I have usually preferred ISO Hunt or TPB but since getting into Demonoid, I like teh reliability of it. Not a great search engine though, could use tweaking and it can be slow for newer unseeded torrents, of course.

all in all, a pretty decent site.

Minonova, Torrentz, and Demonoid are what I use. I used to use ISOHunt, but recently they started partially filtering the search results for U.S. users due to copyright bulldogs, so I’m done with that one.

How can one torrent site be ‘faster’ than the other? Aren’t they all dependent on the bandwidth allowed by the seeders and/or other leechers?

That changes from torrent to torrent, does it not?

dude iptorrents is 1 of the slowest private trackers out there and on the lowest level, try googleing “torrent tracker levels” and you will see some good sh!t, an if u want speed, get an invite to SCC or SCT and dont forget TL

    mininova sux.
way too many NON-ENGLISH movies spammed on there.

    August 29th, 2008 | 23:54

Public torrents are great for some of the hard to find items. I actually find myself using them most for audio books and comics. Question though, does a site like Demonoid count as public? Essentially you have to sign up and the sign up is very limited. I mean if it is new you can download it, but the majority of the torrents require membership for download. anyway Of the top 5 though, I’d have to say Demonoid has my favorite search settings. and I use the top three interchangeably. Still go with privates for all scene torrents.

    @27 guru pitka
public trackers suck, slow speeds an too many H’n'R’s private sites have more seeder to leecher ratio so = quicker downloads and rls are uplaoded to privatesites alot quicker the public

@24 - I hate it when people bash torrents, of course usenet is better if you’re willing to pay for it (i do) BUT it doesnt have as much stuff p2p so each has its place. I use Usenet if what I want is on there otherwise I’ll usually use mininova as its fairly clean. I used to use private trackers alot but nearly everything on them is on Usenet.

If you want rare and obscure stuff then torrent sites are the way to go, stop the stupid noob talk. I bet you used torrents before switching to Usenet!

@24 RS Premium is much better LOL, but if u want something free, torrents are the best way, IRC in some cases.

  39. tuoppi
    August 30th, 2008 | 00:34

“scene” torrent sites have nothing to do with the scene either. Isn’t the offical scene guideline that they hate all p2p.

  40. Respect-My-Authority
    August 30th, 2008 | 00:48

My favorite is in the number 4 spot, (www.torrentz.com) because it gives you trackers for all of the other 24 sites listed in one spot. Download from Mininova, and copy all the trackers from the rest of the site into uTorrent. It makes for fast downloading. Thanks for the list Martin.

Oh, and just a quick thought, is Demonoid really deemed public? I know you can use their trackers without registering, but to actually get on their site to download directly from their site you need a username/password. It’s like, their tracker is public, but their site is private. Just an opinion.

    Thanks again!

Wait so IPtorrent is the fastest on the net huh?
    a private tracker…
… with other people like you and me…

    ok.

the private tracker I use gets me 0-sec downloads at 2000k/s or more
and that’s cuz my line is maxed at 16mbit …

so is that the fastest? no.

    August 30th, 2008 | 01:33

@40 and the others mystified by demonoid:
Yes, it is a public tracker. Anyone can get files hosted on those trackers.
Demonoid IS a public torrent site (although limited) You can download a given number of torrents less than a week old, without having to create an account/log in. Another thing to remember, about 80%+ of what is posted on demonoid, gets picked up by other torrent sites that search/index other torrent sites. Also, many demonoid users also upload their torrents onto other pub sites, to increase the swarm and to get hits.

Mininova and many others list the trackers for each torrent, so it really is not that hard to get demonoid torrents without even going to demonoid.

Now, here is what mystifies me:
“Our partner site NewTorrents.info holds the 19th place.”

    Really? 19th? But…. NewTorrents isn’t….. and… 19th place holder is.. OnlyTorrents.com….

    :P

  48. toffeee
    August 30th, 2008 | 01:47

All i know is when i get a file that is well seeded my line gets maxed and above what i’m suppose to be getting and it is only 12mb…..but i can get and have sometimes on IPTorrents 19mb…..so that’s why i think IPTorrents is pretty good but i know there is probs better out there….so long live the scene and seed ppl, also a big up to RSLOG the best scene info site around!

Who ever wrote this Article & List should disqualify the entire list & its respective rankings for posting
    Torrent Spy .
As quoted from their main page

    “Friends of TorrentSpy,

We have decided on our own, not due to any court order or agreement, to bring the Torrentspy.com search engine to an end and thus we permanently closed down worldwide on March 24, 2008.

The legal climate in the USA for copyright, privacy of search requests, and links to torrent files in search results is simply too hostile. We spent the last two years, and hundreds of thousands of dollars, defending the rights of our users and ourselves.

Ultimately the Court demanded actions that in our view were inconsistent with our privacy policy, traditional court rules, and International law; therefore, we now feel compelled to provide the ultimate method of privacy protection for our users - permanent shutdown.

    It was a wild ride,

    The TorrentSpy Team

“Big Brother in the form of an increasingly powerful government and in an increasingly powerful private sector will pile the records high with reasons why privacy should give way to national security, to law and order [...] and the like.” - Justice William O. Douglas

When it comes down to it most of use torrents coz we dont wanna pay for real thing.. so udea to me of using Usenext etc seems dumb.
Sites that are public or private that have their own tracker are usually the way to go when comes to speed.
Obviously in terms of time a durect link is better but hey lol
Demonoid and piratebay and eztv are what i use mainly, and have been doing so for years now.
Demonoid is top of my list coz the content of majority of stuff on there is no where else and it is reliable source. (meaning if ya new to whole torrent thing going to any ol torrent site n clickn download u could end up virus on ya cpu, Where as on demonoid that never happen.)
There is a good community feel too.
I have to say since i been a member it has tripled in members. Rarely use Isohunt and Torrentz or mininova.
anyway i should really goto bed as i havent slept 4 like 2 days now lol

You’re an idiot. Just like any private tracker the speed is dictated by the line you have, the amount of seeders, the amount of seeders with seedboxes and how popular the torrent is.

I suggest people who don’t know what they’re talking about to not comment.

it’s amazing how NEWTORRENTS went from one of the best sites to the load of fail it is now in such short time.

i loved that site and its forum, but now i’ve lost all interest in it.

too much downtime, not up-to-date most of the time, many broken torrents. also there are so many 0 seed torrents now… who uploads all this sh1t? it’s mostly old cr4p noone cares about and movie packs.
