TMPGenc is nice. No doubt. Great converter…better than sorenson squeeze. Still there never was a need for it!
If you are just authoring a DVD for fun…go stick with that 19$ software you were always using.
For serious authoring TMGEnc does NOT provide the proper functions. This tool maybe plays in the league of Adobe Encore where you can do some minor things.
AUTHORING meanwhile, atleast to me, means I can do all I want with the tool: Sonic Scenartist or DVDLAB PRO
How are you going to code(!) game logics on a DVD (e.g. WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire) with kiddie-authoring software like Encore or TMPGenc.
Summary: Pegasys is wasting money to enter new markets.
Therefor their good tools like the converter stay expensive.
    Screw Pegasys!

@ 21 & 28…. I had same problem too. I use Vista Ultimate 64 bit. Try doing this it worked great for me:

1: Install then reboot as required

2: Run Application one time, then exit

3: Right click on Keygen and use “Run as Admin”

    4: Hit Generate button first

5: Go down to bottom to where it says install Directory and browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Pegasys Inc\TMPGEnc DVD Author 3 with DivX Authoring

    6: Click Patch

Works Great ! Thanx for the upload

this is not bad but it takes twice as long as convertxtodvd even though it utilizes dual core and core 2 duo processors, i decided to stick with convertxtodvd. i use TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress to recode the dvdrips then i convert with convertxtodvd.

@42 the longer the encoding in most of the cases gives better quality, i’ve used convertxtodvd for long, i’ve tested may apps and encoders and discovered this and grassvalley procoder, which are truly the best, depends on the need, only tempgnc dvd for authoring and finishing the dvd.The difference is very noticable with the right settings and tools u use

  47. gadaffi
    June 15th, 2008 | 15:58

Yes, TMPGenc takes longer for a reason. It does a 2 pass encode, compared to VSO’s one pass. The video quality is far better with TMPGenc. But this app is for authoring, and i like to keep my DVDs simple so this is more than adequate. Thanks.

my only beef with convertX is when i’m creating the menu page. you can’t move the titles around on the screen so where the “Play” button is placed, it might sometime cover your background picture.

    otherwise… i LOVE convertXtoDVD.

I’ll give this a shot. I’ve been using Nero Vision for simple DVDs and DVD Lab PRO 2 for the complex stuff (using TMPGEnc Plus to convert the video and BeSweet to convert the audio first).

If the menu creation options are good I may switch to this.

@46 i use TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress to recode the dvdrips to mpeg2 format to clean up the video a bit by the use of the filters available. the filters for video noise, audio noise clean up, colour adjustments, sharpen filter, video cropping and audio normalize. but the main use of it is usually for the large amount of CAM’s and TS movies coming out these days. when finish i just load the resulting mpeg 2 video file into convertx and encode. yes its double work but its no problem when u have a fast pc.

    June 15th, 2008 | 19:47

not sure if some of you guys know what you’re talking about.
Convertx re-encodes xvid to dvd format. This program will make a dvd from vobs (without a re-encode) plus will make a ‘divx’ dvd without re-encode, but I’m not so sure how compatible it is with standalones.

Anyway, if you want to do a straight convert from divx to dvd, stick with convertx.

  82. deaf audiophile
    June 15th, 2008 | 20:01

For awhile I used ConvertXtoDVD to burn XviDs to DVD, but after awhile it mysteriously quit being able to do subtitles, which was a showstopper for me. So then I tried to get into complicated DVD authoring stuff but never could wrap my head around it.

Finally I went the REALLY EASY route and got a $200 Oppo DVD player that just plays XviD files directly. Now I just burn 3 to 6 XviD movies on a DVD using Nero ISO, no conversion necessary, couldn’t be easier or faster.

Another solution; more affordable than an Oppo; Philips new DVP5992. Finally adds real USB 2.0, now reads wmv; play your .avix/XviD/DivX & MPG from disc or jump drive. $49.95 @ Costco. You can easily update firmware; region free hack; and they have actually provided a better remote.

    Hasn’t anybody noticed?
This is identical to Divx Author 1.5
    ……and I mean Identical…..screens, menu…everything….
If you already have Divx Author, Don’t bother to download this……even the conversion speed is the same!

Thank you for sharing this app. tmpgenc dvd author is the best for burning multiple episodes to one dvdr 4.7gb. tmpgenc dvd author is also excellent for importing subtitles from .srt files that can be downloaded from subtitlesource.org. other dvd apps like convertxtodvd are weak compared to this one.

How do you add the .idx and .sub subtitle files to a movie so that the user can make it so they’re either on or off? Can this program do it? All I saw when burning a movie was to put in subtitles manually. Do they need to be hardcoded into the .avi so they’re always there?

^^ I found the Import, but .sub or .idx were not in the menu.
