Timer Warner offers uncapped inet for $150

Time Warner Cable decided it wanted to play with bandwidth capping, but after intense backlash from customers, the company has backed off its original plans. At first, Time Warner yapped about unrolling a trial tiered pricing program in Beaumont, Texas, and then expanded the plan to hit Austin and San Antonio,Texas; Greensboro, N.C.; and Rochester, N.Y. The tiered pricing plan forced customers to choose between a 5GB and 40GB download cap per month, and outrage ensued. The noise got so loud that Landel Hobbs, the chief operating officer of Time Warner Cable, wrote a response to customer complaints that slightly tweaked the plans but did not, as many had hoped, do away with them.

Under the new plan, customers can choose between 1GB and 100GBs on various pricing schemes. The 1GB per month plan offers speeds of 768KB download and 128KB upload for $15. The 100GB plan — called Road Runner Turbo — brings 10MB download, 1MB upload speeds for $75 per month; anything over that costs $1 per gigabyte up to $150. That means if you want turbo speeds and unlimited Internet access, you’ll have to pay $150 per month. In the face of a recession, Time Warner is seeking to boost the bottom line, and, in the process, gouging the customer. And while capping Internet usage will bring money to its table, there are problems with Time Warner’s math. Broadband DSL Reports, for instance, states that no data supports Time Warner’s claim that tiered pricing is wanted or necessary. Ars Technica crunches the numbers and discovers that even at the lowest rung, Time Warner is charging customers $6 per GB monthly — a number exponentially larger than its main competition, whose fees range from 9 cents per giabyte (AT&T) to 17 cents per gigabyte from Comcast.

lol @ Road Runner "Turbo". what a scam….it's only turbo when bandwidth is available..If/When bandwidth is available, service is "turbo" for only the first 10 MB of the download then goes back to a lower speed

You do realize that in france, you get 100Mbits up and down for 30€/month. And that price includes unlimited free phone calls to 60 countries, a few hundreds TV channels + some GB storage on internet, and some other goodies. So in $ it's about 45$…
Oh, and of course net isn't 'capped'… LOL to that offer, they should hide under the carpet for the rest of their days off shame.

Odd, tried to post and it got shot down?

Just noted that this isn't uncapped, it's "virtually uncapped" at 175GB / month based on Turbo Plan of 100GB + a max of 75GB for overages.

    http://a.longreply.com/109511

The memo disclosure is there for it.

"We will introduce a 100 GB Road Runner Turbo package for $75 per month (offering speeds of 10 MB/1 MB). Overage charges will be $1 per GB per month. "

"Overage charges will be capped at $75 per month. That means that for $150 per month customers could have virtually unlimited usage at Turbo speeds. "

Keep in mind that's still 10/1 and the 50/5 in testing areas will be $99 with no word on how capped that is.

True, if you are urban citizen in some metropol or it surroundings it sure does sound like a crappy offer.

But if you are living at some Texas farm 50 miles from any starbuck Coffee shop it can be a good offer.

Digging down cables is a very expensive thing to do, so it's only logical that there is price difference in case you are digging down for 10.000 costumers or 10.

the maximum you can get here in Australia is 24mbit (theoretical speed) it it's over priced as hell. Not to mention that there's not one unlimited plan here. They all get capped to 64kbits when you exceed your limit

sorry, but I have roadrunner turbo, and my download speed is 30meg down and 2 meg up, with no cap and I only pay 39.95 a month. I have had timewarner roadrunner for 3 years and have never been charged a penny more. So this must be for new customers, cause I haven't been told anything about a price increase or capped bandwidth.

@26 GSP….you must live in a shell brother, because I have timewarner too and they didnt notifiy me eithier, its just been all over the news, but its not happening everywhere yet just TX, ROC NY, and a few other places. But it is most definately a reality just google it . I can assure you sooner than later you won't be getting RR turbo for 39.99. So you should at least start looking for a better ISP so you have a plan in place when they do cap.

    peace

I wish we had uncapped internet access here in South Africa, these people should come and do business here, and we pay like ZAR 289 per 1 gig @7.2mbs if you are lucky to get that good signal. They are starting to advertise uncapped internet but have to pay loads of money for the devices and then it all depends on how busy the net is.

I'm seeing an alarming trend with this economic downturn that I've never seen in previous bad times. Normally, when the economy hits a bump, businesses tighten their belts, charge a little less, make less money overall, but still survive. Historically, that's how it's always been. It's supply and demand at it's most basic.

These days, though, there's this blind greed to make just as much as they were making 2 years ago, so when they're selling 50 widgets a month instead of 100, they double the price. It's like these businesses are on crack. These type of actions pretty much guarantee that their company will fail in the quickest manner possible, and yet they do nothing to change their path. It's almost like they'd rather see their company fail than make a few dollars less.

    April 12th, 2009 | 00:34

Sigh…. Ok ONE MORE TIME FOR THE INTENTIONALLY IGNORANT. Check the TW website and read the fine print. If you already had an account with them BEFORE this was started, you are not and WILL NOT be affected by this, this is ONLY for the NEW customers. It is a federal felony to grandfather in anything into a new rate structure or law (public utilities do not count under this law) As such, as long as you keep your account active and paid up, they CANNOT BY FEDERAL LAW force you into the capped limits and MUST BY CONTRACTUAL LAW give you what you signed up for.

On the other hand, the second that you drop them and then come back, you are the same as a "new customer" as will be treated as same.

All of this hoohaw is nothing to get excited about…that is unless you dont have an account with them already. Then you are screwed.

    most expensive offer in switzerland
    (by the old monopolist swisscom):

60$ for VDSL (~20-25mb down, 1mb up, uncapped)
this includes unlimited phone calls to swiss land lines

and switzerland is considered to be way behind on triple play offers in europe.
