I thought that was a very fine documentary. The bit at the end where Mr Bannatyne invited the BAT rep to accompany him to Africa, first class and at his expense was classic.

The most frightening bit in the story for me was the man who won the BAT lottery, and whose wealth convinced his family to acquiesce in his habit. The money winner even tried to make out that God was on the side of the smokers. (A dubious claim, given that only smokers get to enter that lottery… It’s a short walk from money to moral compromise, and you can see idolatry on a clear day.)

The whole business of selling single cigarettes (which appeal to children) and advertising to young people is worth highlighting. BAT think they can get away with murder because they are killing black people, and I’m glad that someone of Mr Bannatyne’s profile and acumen is willing to stand up against them. Power to your elbow Mr B. I’ll pray for your work at making BAT into a decent company!

Whilst it’s a good show, it’s not brilliant reporting. “Who buys singles? Kids”. No, selling cigarettes in singles is a good strategy if the people living in the city have low disposable income (such as in Nigeria and Malawi). That’s like saying Head & Shoulders shampoo is sold in smaller containers in the Philipines only so the kids can buy it.
