This World Duncan Bannatyne Takes On Tobacco WS PDTV XviD-COUNCIL
It has become general common knowledge that smoking is unhealthy and serves no purpose except to profit ‘the man’ – corporations, and governments who tax the product. However, there is an alarming rise in new smokers, specifically in Mauritius, Nigeria and Malawi. The host, Duncan Bannatyne, investigates. CONCIL brought Sunday’s Top Gear episode and the PDTV version of this show as well. A word of warning – the main host has a very annoying accent.
NB: this a real top-end investigative documentary. I have not seen one quite as ‘going after the man’ as this one. If we’re having a best of rlslog week post, this will be on it.
Duncan Bannatyne embarks on a journey through Africa to assess the rise in underage smoking. Visiting Mauritius, Nigeria and Malawi, he investigates the tactics used in the sale of cigarettes to youngsters. He also hears from a doctor trying to deal with the epidemic in smoking-related diseases, and visits a primary school where more than half of the 11-13-year-olds smoke.

To bad it doesn’t show how much money the folks who run the anti-tobacco lobby have made off it. Or the lawyers who got so rich they retired, or the billions the drug companies have made off stop smoking aid’s. Or the tricks and lies that have been used to promote the anti-smoking agenda. I guess you have to watch a Penn & Teller episode to find out that sort of thing. Or anyone with a computer could use Google and see it for themselves…but that would be independent thought and rationalization. Jumping on a bandwagon is much more fun
Wait until the anti-alcohol movement makes a comeback like it’s making in other countries. This will all be a fond memory compared to what the anti-drinkers have lined up. This happens only when they and their parents are not that much familiar with the concept of ‘tough love’. A recent study shoed kids who sre brought up with regular but justified doses of the spanking medicine learn to make quick & right decisions early on in the later stages of life. Guess their conscince becomes stronger than their subconcious.
I’m Scottsh. Not the American version of Scottish – an actual Scotsman from Scotland. And I find the presenter’s accent annoying.

@23 – I reckon anyone who’s in a serious enough condition wouldn’t pay for a prescription regardless of where they are in the UK. People who are too ill to work, homeless people, junkies et cetera have *never* paid prescriptions regardless of where they are in the UK.

Whilst it’s a good show, it’s not brilliant reporting. “Who buys singles? Kids”. No, selling cigarettes in singles is a good strategy if the people living in the city have low disposable income (such as in Nigeria and Malawi). That’s like saying Head & Shoulders shampoo is sold in smaller containers in the Philipines only so the kids can buy it.
ex-smoker. im a restless person and it did calm me, but its just not worth the health risks.
I thought that was a very fine documentary. The bit at the end where Mr Bannatyne invited the BAT rep to accompany him to Africa, first class and at his expense was classic.
The most frightening bit in the story for me was the man who won the BAT lottery, and whose wealth convinced his family to acquiesce in his habit. The money winner even tried to make out that God was on the side of the smokers. (A dubious claim, given that only smokers get to enter that lottery… It’s a short walk from money to moral compromise, and you can see idolatry on a clear day.)
The whole business of selling single cigarettes (which appeal to children) and advertising to young people is worth highlighting. BAT think they can get away with murder because they are killing black people, and I’m glad that someone of Mr Bannatyne’s profile and acumen is willing to stand up against them. Power to your elbow Mr B. I’ll pray for your work at making BAT into a decent company!
