This is England is yet another interesting drama / documentary introduced at Toronto International Film Festival. As the name says, it is about England, or to be more exact: about one of English problems: skinheads. This movie already won 3 various awards including British Independent Film Award. Great video quality on 1 CD.
Roland Rat, Margaret Thatcher; Rubik’s Cubes, the Royal Wedding; aerobics, skinheads… It’s 1983, and the schools are breaking up for summer. Shaun is 12 and a bit of a loner, growing up with his mum in a grim coastal town, his dad killed fighting in the Falklands War. On his way home from school where he’s been tormented all day for wearing flares, he runs into a group of skinheads, who against expectations turn out to be friendly and take him under their wing. Soon Shaun discovers parties, girls and snappy dressing, and finds some role models in Woody, Milky and the rest of the gang.
But when an older, overtly racist skinhead returns home from prison, the easy camaraderie of the group is broken, and Shaun is drawn into much more uncomfortable territory. Based largely on his own experience as a youngster, this is Shane Meadows’ most mature and fully realised film. Handling the complexities of masculinity, violence and race with sensitivity and a lightness of touch, it’s hard to imagine a film that would better capture the mood of the time, or that could have any greater an understanding of the allure of being part of a gang.

This film looks alright. I’d rather see a docudrama(get it right please) about this than slimy ignorant chav culture. And people forget that there are anti racist skinheads as well, so it’s not that cut and dried.

A film portraying the reality of working class life in Britain. For all the bleeding heart liberals out there, this film addresses serious issues still relevant today. Like many films of this genre it is up to you to decide whether the message of the film is racist or not. Personally I don’t think it portrays racism as a positive thing. Some people wouldn’t know a decent film if it headbutted them in the face.

i think that honestly this film a problem that england has had for a long time and will continue to have for quite some time. It doesnt partray racism in a good it only proptrays england in a state and that is a good point racism has long been a factor of this country’s demise as has bad governing and i think i speak for everyone when i point one big finger at thatcher.

If England continues to take in foreigners at the rate they are doing, whites will be the minority by 2100. Sure, that’s a while to, but think of the hell the English will be put through if multiculturalism isn’t stopped dead in it’s tracks!
