Last week when the first episode of The Universe Season two aired I was eagerly waiting and anticipating the latest scene rip to download. aAF delivers the second episode, titled Cosmic Holes. Scientists currently know that black holes exist, but they are also trying to confirm the existence of other types of new and interesting ‘holes’. New discoveries explored in the program include colliding black holes, intermediate black holes and manufacturing mini black holes. Stoner alert: if you want to get totally tripped out and take a journey of your life make sure to do it while watching this episode.

Cosmic Holes: Today, we know black holes exist, and now scientists are trying to confirm that other holes lurk in hyperspace. Our infinite cosmos could contain a variety of “holes” such as black, white, “mini” and wormholes. White holes are the reverse of black holes; instead of matter being sucked into it, matter is ejected out. Wormholes are gateways in the fabric of space and time. They are included in Einstein’s field equations as possibilities for their existence. Neither white holes nor wormholes have ever been found. Learn about new discoveries including, colliding binary black holes, intermediate black holes and manufacturing mini black holes.

    I have 2 questions:

    1. If matter/energy cannot be destroyed, where do they GO once sucked into a black hole?

    2. How can BH’s emit gamma rays if light itself can’t escape? i.e. How do the gamma rays escape?

    20 words or less pls. :)

    @ BlackPlastic
    Prevailing opinion in the scientific community states that matter doesn’t “go” anywhere once it passes through to the singularity, but is crushed, by the intense gravitational forces, to such a degree that it seems to disappear.
    Gamma rays are caused by the matter thats “crashing” with other matter in the OUTER event horizon of a black hole, hence it’s not really escaping the black hole, although some theories state that over time all that matter and energy absorbed by the black hole “leaks” out.
    Sorry couldn’t keep it under twenty words :( .

    @19 xyztynz, ahhh thank you..

    So is this series worth getting? Is it just as informative or is it just a lot of CGI and ADHD scripting like most docos nowadays?

    Gimme Carl Sagan any day.

    we and everything from ordinary matter here around us are actually very “lightweight”,
    theres a bunch of empty space between gradually smaller particles that make up matter, way more than actual “matter” itself
    and in a black hole all that empty space is used up to squeeze the particles together side-by-side like a giant industrial-waste-press (think of old cars being pressed together into small cubicles)
    “hole” is very misleading termin to use for the phenomena

    The matter goes in to the black hole and then escapes in to a white hole in a separate dimension which creates another universe. The creation of everything that we can see, smell, hear and touch was the result of the destruction of another universe. It is all one giant circle. There is no beginning, there is no end.

    (Trippy theory by me)
