The Thing 1982 1080p DTS HDDVD x264-hV

Heh, nice old movie here guys. The Thing (1982), released by hV. I haven’t seen this movie myself so I can’t really say wether it’s good or not, so I’ll leave you guys discussing that. At least the quality looks fine :)

In the midst of the Antartican snowfield, the scientists and workers of a small American research base are shocked when a helicopter begins to circle their camp, chasing and shooting at a dog. When the helicopter is destroyed and the passenger’s are killed by accident, the dog is let into the base and the American’s begin to wonder what has actually happened. The helicopter is discovered to be of Norweigan make, and probably linked to the Norweigan base not too far from their own. Helicopter pilot J.R MacReady offers to travel to the Norweigan base and find out what has happened. On arrival, he finds that the place has been totally destroyed. He also discovers a mangled body that looks as though it was once that of a person, which he brings back with him to study. It is only then that the clues begin to add up; the dog morphs horribly into a strange creature that attacks the researchers. They manage to fight it off, but the base’s doctor has come to a conclusion: an alien with the power to transform and take the appearance of anybody else is amongst them. Who is infected already, and who can be trusted? J.R MacReady sets out to find the answers to exactly that.

This is one of the most popular, (and good), movies of the early eighties. That period was full of good horror movies like Halloween, Friday the 13th and so forth.

The quality of the movie is of course nothing like we get today, but its well worth seeing.

Oh killer! This is one of the all-time best horror movies. The environmental isolation and the psychological stresses of being hunted by an known creature is such a universal archetype.

If you haven’t seen this, chef recommends.

The original B&W was better..The THING was James Arness AKA Matt Dillon of Gunsmoke..It was his 1st major roll.

At the time it was a state of the art remake of the 1950s version. It still holds up well today, the effects may have dated a bit but the terror and suspense are first class. Carpenter’s second best movie, after Halloween of course :) And it has a brilliant electronic score by Enio Morricone, simple but perfect for the movie’s setting and unseen terror. If you liked Alien, then you’ll love this.

Bram, you don’t deserve to write about “old movies”, when you didn’t see The Thing. I would welcome more editorial info, not just “hey, new movie appeared from group XY, check it out”. Not even Carpenter’s name is mentioned, pfff. Anyway, one of the best horror movies EVER.

the best horror movie ever made!!!!
its a classic, john carpenter had done superb work!
true horror man’s classic.(no women on the movie!, that’s why it was so succesful, no annoying females.)

films like that are once in a life time, today, no one can stand up and say “i can top or even match that movie”, and that’s a damn shame.

    DTS?

Doesn’t that require compatible audio hardware? I have Enter the Dragon with a DTS soundtrack and I don’t get any audio except on the stereo commentary track.

Great SciFi horror movie with some good shock moments. “Real” effects and not overwhelmed by CGI like so many movies now.

    @Gotbannedcosofname

that depends what you are playing the file on/with..

..with software on the pc you should be able to mixdown the DTS track to stereo or play with a software dts decoder.

..on a standalone you should have either a built-in DTS decoder or an outboard decoder/amp combi or possibly a player that can mixdown the DTS to stereo…

…however on the Enter The Dragon issue is that a orginal disc? As I thought that most “DVD`s” that have a DTS soundtrack would have an AC3 stereo one too…

The Movie editor didn’t know that this movie is a CLASSIC! John Carpenter at his best. I mean the writer of this entry even got the director wrong! Bram should be fired for getting this classic wrong. Blasphemy!

The music was famously by Carpenter himself, not Morricone.

    @ lol

Although John Carpenter ‘famously’ prduced the music to many of his movies, the original score to The Thing was in fact by Morricone. Try and research your comments before trying to correct others!

This movie well worth downloading (or buying!) in HD, looks really nice.

    Who tagged this 1080p when it’s clearly not 1080p ? 1080p = 1920×1080

    “Who tagged this 1080p when it’s clearly not 1080p ? 1080p = 1920×1080″

This is corrrect tagging, as your HD TV has a resloution of 1920 x 1080 pixels for 16:9 ratio broadcasts or media. But like many older movies “The Thing” is a 2.35:1 ratio so you’ll get black bars top and bottom of the screen and the actual vertical pixels used for the image area is only 816 pixels, but you get the full width pixels, hence the 1920 x 816. This means the black bars are using up 132 pixels top and botom, a total of 264 pixels.

Yeah it’s a waste but there’s no way round this!

Awesome film! John Carpenter’s films were either very poor, or absolutely phenominal. The Thing is one of his best, and shows that the 80’s weren’t all about bad acting, stupid teens and sequel fodder.

There’s no other film that can match this with regard, not only to some incredible non-cgi special effects, but watching everyone on the research base become paranoid & suspicious about who is going to ‘turn’ next.

@25. Yeah, the wolf scene is cool, but the bit that finally got me was the attempt at CPR which kinda backfired…;-)

whats the fuss about this movie? Watched it last night, and first of all it wasn’t scary at all. Was like watching a Godzilla or something a bit of entertainment but no scares :(

bam, not all people have seen this movie so what? Remember, most of people in here are 18-22 years old, thus chances are all of those people seen “the Thing” are very slim.

Yeah yeah…18-22 years old. Why are you posting your comment anyways? It’s like filling air with air. Go watch Pipi Longstockings then.

The Thing was and still is a great movie. So the SFX are outdated, which I don’t believe though. Like the CGI remake in 2009 is going to make it better right? The storyline was great and well met with the book “Who goes there”. And for me the storyline is more important than any SFX . Movies nowadays are like a giant rollercoaster: the feeling of adrenaline pumpin to your veins…and then the ride ends…and nobody talks about it again.
